Samuel Crabtree, son of Irvin Crabtree and Sarah Faggard

Samuel Thomas CRABTREE was born 30 Dec. 1838 at 28 Mile Bluff, AL. He died 17 June 1923 at about 85 and is buried at Indian Springs Cemetery at Eight Mile, AL, where his tombstone reads that he was born 1838 and died in 1923. Amie Akerman notes that both Phelan B. Crabtree, son of Sam Sr., gave Samuel T. as being born in 1838.

On 10 March 1859, at Mobile, AL., Samuel, 21, married Margaret OVERSTREET, daughter of Jacob OVERSTREET and Elizabeth DAVIS. Margaret (perhaps Margaret Mary) was born 14 March 1840 in GA and died 1872 at 32. She is buried at Indian Springs Cem., at Eight Mile, AL.

Amie Akerman notes:

“Her (Margaret’s) parents WERE Jacob and Elizabeth Davis Overstreet, this is from the 1840 Census of Wayne Co Ms…Jacob and Elizabeth’s names were given to me by James Ervin Crabtree (still living in Moss Point, Ms,) grandson of Samuel T. Jr., son of Sam and Margaret, also, Harry Keenan (still living), grandson of Vina E. Crabtree Stringfellow daughter of Sam T. Jr., son of Sam T. Sr. and Margaret Overstreet Crabtree.”

Amie continues,

“John Overstreet son of Henry, father of Jacob is on Page 2, #4. John’s son James is on Page #13. b.15 Feb 1807 d.18 Mar 1883. Jacob is on Page 5 #14 b. 1810 d 1845.

“Jacob and his family are listed in the 1849 Wayne Co, Ms census with Elizabeth and his children. Jefferson b. 1832, Sarah b.1835, Ferba b. 1837, *Margaret (my ggrandmother) b. 1839, Brazil b. 6 Aug 1842, and Rosier R. b.1844.

“James Ervin (of Moss Point, Ms) in a conversation with me, claims Elizabeth Davis Overstreet was full blooded Choctaw, making Margaret and her siblings half Choctaw. Jacob is NOT shown in 1850 census, he died in 1845. Elizabeth IS shown with her children in the 1860 census, page 3.”

Amie Akerman supplies the following history and dates for Samuel Thomas CRABTREE:

“I believe GGrandpa Sam was married 4 times. The dates of his children tend to prove this. A story told me, by his son Phelan B. CRABTREE and my Aunt Sarah Beatrice Crabtree PARNELL, is that, and I quote them, ‘By the time he was 17 Grandpa Sam was married had three children and served in the army.’

“I Was told by Uncle Phelan, Aunt Sarah Beatrice PARNELL and Rena Crabtree BOOTHE (the ggGranddaughter of Theodore) that Amos was the son of Nancy HEVELSTON. He was either adopted by Samuel Sr. or just took the name of CRABTREE. His last name was FOSTER. There is more to this story, told me by Uncle Phelan. There was a murder committed in Mobile Co. area, and shortly after that, Theodore and Amos left the area and, in his words, ‘high tailed it to the Richburg and Hattisburg, MS area’. Theodore was married to an Indian woman (unknown to me). They did meet two sisters Catherine and Hattie HARTFIELD and married them. Theodore married Catherine and Amos married Hattie. They are all buried in Richburg Cem. I met Amos’ children on a visit to Hattisburg in 1984.

“The rest of Sam’s story: He was father to 17 children, the last fathered at age 72. Just think how many he would have had if Viagra was around then. Hope you can enjoy this story of a grandpa I never met, but wish I had…”
Amie Akerman

I asked Amie how in the world Sam could afford 17 children. What he did for a living. She replied, “It has been said that Sam was a butcher but I would imagine he would have probably worked at job to feed his kids…I know some of the (Crabtree) men worked in saw mills, my grandpa Tom worked in Chickasaw AL setting off dynamite to clear land. Some worked on boats…others in ship yards. Uncle Phelan, drove oxen…”

FamilySearch, Internet Genealogy Service, in an August 21, 1999 site search gives Samuel “Sam” as being born 1850 in Georgia and that there were these other siblings to Samuel Thomas and Adam Bell, but the dates are very far off from what Amie Akerman sites: iii. Littleton “Lit” born 1848, Gainsville, Hall Co. AL. Married Nancy.
iv. Jacob “Jake” born 1852, GA. Married Jane Miller, born 1852.

Amie Akerman writes: “There are six (6) Littleton CRABTREES in Littleton and Rebecca’s line. Also two of the Littletons married Nancy’s, one a BUSBY and one a BROWNING. One month apart 3 Mar 1858 and the other 5 Feb 1858. Think they are trying to confuse us.”

The 1860 census shows Samuel CRABTREE living in the same area as the KEARNS. Irvin CRABTREE, his brother, was father of Adam Bell CRABTREE, father of Susie CRABTREE who married Rhett Goode KEARNS.

Adam Bell Crabtree and Alice Virginia Reneger (Ranager)

Adam Bell CRABTREE was reportedly born 5 Feb. 1846 to Irvin CRABTREE and Sarah Ann FAGGERT/FAGGARD. His daughter, Susie gave him as born at Gainsville, Hall Co. GA. The 1850 and 1860 Alabama Mobile censuses however give him as born abt. 1848 in AL.

26 April 1877, in Whistler, Mobile Co., AL, Adam, about 31, married Alice Virginia RENEGER who was about 22, born 3 March 1851 in Whistler to Andrew Jackson RENEGER and Martha Jane JONES.

Between 1878 and 1894 Adam and Alice would have 9 children:

  • Adam CRABTREE was born 2 Feb 1878 in Whistler, Mobile Co., AL. He married Margaret HIGHTOWER b. 1882 in Whistler. (FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service source birth date.)
  • John b. 25 July 1879, Whistler, Mobile Co. AL. (FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service source birth date.)
  • George William, b. 4 Nov. 1882, Whistler, Mobile Co., AL., died 3 May 1953 at about 71. He is buried in Whistler Cemetery, Whistler, AL. According to Jean Kearns, George was a hermit who lived in a shack on some family property in the woods, the old homestead, without water or electricity. (FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service provides birth date. Amie Akerman gives death and burial information.)
  • Charles “Charley” b. 29 July 1884 at Whistler, Mobile Co., AL. (FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service provides birth date. Amie Akerman gives death and burial information.)
  • Martha Ann b. 11 July 1886, Whistler, Mobile Co. AL., died 21 Jan 1970 at Meridian, Lauderdale Co., MS. (FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service provides birth date. Amie Akerman gives death and burial information.)
  • Harry “Pot” b. 5 Sept. 1888, Whistler, Mobile Co., AL., died 27 Oct. 1968, Moblie, AL and is buried at the Whistler Cemetery in Whistler. He had a son, Harry Jr. Harry is given as having played guitar with folk singer Woody Gurthrie, riding the railroad with him during the old hobo days. This is accepted as true. However, he was also a “story-teller.” He gave his great nephew, Martin, an acoustic Harmony guitar that he said was the one he had used when playing with Woody. Later it was learned this particular model was not made until 1957. Harry resided in Washington DC, then Mobile, AL.(Amie Akerman gives death date from tombstone and burial information. SSDI gives birth and death dates.)
  • “Thomas” Lee was born 29 Oct. 1890 at Whistler, Mobile Co., AL and died 4 Dec 1961 at 71. He married “Alice” and together they had “Lee”. Family notes give beside Lee, “Washington D.C.” (FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service provides birth and death dates.)
  • Susan “Susie” Elizabeth was born 8 June 1893 at Whistler and married Rhett KEARNS.
  • Mary V. was born 15 Dec. 1894 at Whistler, Mobile Co., AL and died July 1968 at about 74 in Mobile AL. (SSDI gives birth and death dates.)

Susie Crabtree Kearns DRUMMOND wrote about her father,

“My father died at the age of 47. Mother was near 85. They were buried in Whistler, Ala. Cemetery. My father was a painter by trade and also a musician–played the violin. My father was fair-skinned–blue eyes–black hair and about 5’4″ I guess. I was 5 years old when he went away and I do not remember. But my sister told me about him. My mother had brown hair, fair skin and gray eyes–she was a very modest person and read her bible daily until the last days. I am the only one left.”

Beverly Melvin noted a similarity in description of Adam with her ggrandfather Thomas CRABTREE:

“The description of Adam sounds an awful lot like my ggrandfather Thomas. They say he was a very small man, but he was very handsome, with black hair and blue eyes. My grandad said he was so short that he could stand under his wife Minerva’s outstretched arm. My grandfather, however, was over six feet tall, but with the same black hair and blue eyes. There are also many musicians in the family. As far as I know none of them ever had lessons but could pick up just about any instrument and learn to play it, and most of the ones I know and have met can sing too. They also seem to have a great many with artistic skills. I know there are several that paint, write poetry, and do various crafts. They are very talented people. I’ve also been told that many of them are very religious people. I live within about an hour of Whistler and went there a few months back to see if I could find the graves of my ggrandfather, Thomas and his father, Samuel, but I didn’t see them at Whistler Cemetery. I’ve been told that they are buried in 8-mile, AL. I hope to make a trip very soon to see if I can find out anything about them…”

Irvin Crabtree and Sarah Ann Faggard

Irvin (or Ervin, Irving, Erving, even Ewin) CRABTREE is reported to have been born 11 Nov. 1814 in Hall County, GA., the eldest son and one of 9 children born to Littleton CRABTREE and Rebecca COX.

Amie Akerman notes that the division of Jackson Co. GA created 1801 Clarke Co.; 1811 Madison Co., and in 1818 Hall, Gwinette and Walton Co. Irvin, who was born in 1814, would have been born in one of these earlier counties.

On 19 Jan 1834 (bond date was 15 Jan 1843) (Source: Amie Ackerman) Irvin married Sarah Ann FAGGARD (FAGGERT/FAGGETT) daughter of Daniel FAGGARD and Martha. Irvin was about 20 and Sarah, born 6 Dec. 1819, was about 15.

Between 1835 and 1846 Irvin and Sarah are known to have had at least 4 children. A fifth child, Jacob, is found in the 1860 Alabama Mobile census:

  • Littleton CRABTREE b. 26 Jan 1835, died 25 May 1887 at about 52. Married Nancy BROWNING. Littleton is buried at Whistler Cemetery, Whistler, AL., the same cemetery as Adam Bell and Alice Virginia RANAGIER CRABTREE. Sources: Amie Akerman, who further notes: Littleton-age 45 notary public, b. Al, father born in “Illinois?” Nancy A. (Browning ) 49, Warren 18, Hubbard 13. After comparing the signature of the Littleton Crabtree’s in the family – –here are 6 Littleton Crabtree,’s–the Littleton in this census is the son of Ervin and Sarah. Littleton Jr, s/o Littleton and Rebecca. Littleton Jr. married Nancy Busby; 1858 signed his license to marry, Nancy Busby,”Littleton, Jr. ” Also have copies of both marriage license. Littleton Crabtree, son of Ervin and Sarah, husband of Nancy Browning, is buried in Old Whistler in a plot next to the Browning family. I was told at one time Nancy Browning was married to a “Warren, surname unknown”.
  • Samuel Thomas CRABTREE was born 30 Dec. 1838 at 28 Mile Bluff, AL. He died 17 June 1923 at about 85 and is buried at Indian Springs Cemetery at Eight Mile, AL, where his tombstone reads that he was born 1838 and died in 1923. He married Margaret OVERSTREET. (NOTE that according to the 1850 Alabama Mobile census he is born about 1846 as his age is given as 14. Amie Akerman notes that both Phelan B. Crabtree, son of Sam Sr., gave Samuel T. as being born in 1838.)
  • Eleander (Ellen) CRABTREE was born about 1840 according to the 1850 Alabama Mobile census. Amie Akerman writes that she was born 10 March 1840 and married Needham CRANE on 19 May 1859 at Mobile Co. AL. The marriage bond is signed by Ervin and Littleton as JP. The marriage took place in the home of the bride’s father.
  • Adam Bell CRABTREE was born 5 Feb. 1846. His daughter, Susie gave him as born at Gainsville, Hall Co. GA. The 1850 and 1860 Alabama Mobile censuses however give him as born abt. 1848 in AL. Married Alice Virginia Ranager.
  • Jacob CRABTREE is given as 7 years of age, born about 1853, in the 1860 Alabama Mobile census. Amie Akerman notes: “Jacob Crabtree, (son of Ervin) Adam Bell’s brother, b.Jan 1850 d.? married Melissa Jane TEW, (M.J) Listed with Jacob, 23 Dec 1870, d/o of John TEW & ?”

Irvin was described by Susie Crabtree Kearns DRUMMOND, his granddaughter, as coming from Hall County, GA.

Susie wrote: “My grandfather was born in Hall Co. Ga. He was married to a girl (or lady) named Ann. I don’t know her last name. His name was Irvin Crabtree. His wife, Ann. They had several sons. They were English and French. The Crabtree name originated in England.”

Beverly Melvin, another Crabtree descendant, gives Irvin as perhaps also written as Irving or Erving. “…Thomas Jefferson Crabtree, Samuel Thomas Crabtree and Irving (Erving) Crabtree…They are my ggrfather, gggrfather & ggggrfather. I have names of siblings to T.J. They may have moved from GA to AL, and from there, some moved to south LA.”

FamilySearch, Internet Genealogy Service. Submitter: HENRIETTA G. EDWARDS ALBUQUERQUE NM USA 87111 Submission: AF85-002035 in an August 21st, 1999 site search gives the birth date of “Ervin” Crabtree, and also the marriage date. It also sites Sarah Ann Faggert as having been born 6 Sep 1817. It gives Irvin’s date of death as being 1861 when instead it is 1863 according to his tombstone (this data from Amie Akerman).

Beverly Melvin has found Ervin and Sarah Ann listed in a marriage registry. She writes: “I found Ervin & Sarah Ann Faggart listed in a marriage registry. The date was Jan. 15, 1834, in Mobile Co. AL. I also have her dob as 9/6/1819 & dod as 2/16/1861 in Citronelle, AL. I have found several cousins who have supplied much of the info I have. From somewhere that I can’t recall, I have a wife listed for Adam as Georgia Tucker, married Jan. 2, 1848. Is that another Adam? Do you know anything about that?…”

Ervin CRABTREE is seen as Evin or Ewin in the 1840 Mississippi Newton County Census. He appears to be living next door to his father, Littleton. Two more houses down is Daniel OVERSTREET, and further down is a James OVERSTREET. Mary OVERSTREET, who married Samuel Thomas CRABTREE, had as a father Jacob OVERSTREET b. 1810 GA, d. 1845 in Wayne Co., MS. Jacob is a nick for James, so this James may be Margaret’s father.

Littleton Crabtree and Rebecca Cox

Littleton CRABTREE is said to have been born about 1790 in Orange Co., NC, to William CRABTREE and Rebecca SPEARMAN. Cecil Champenois has Littleton born at Hillsboro, Orange Co., NC.

The 1800 Orange Co. NC census shows a William Jr. CRABTREE (2 2 0 0 2 | 3 0 1 0 1), a William CRABTREE ( 0 1 1 0 1 | 1 1 0 1), a James CRABTREE Jr. (2 1 1 0 0 | 0 0 1), James CRABTREE (2 1 0 1 0 | 2 1 1 0 1) and an Abraham CRABTREE (1 0 1 0 0 | 1 0 1), all on page 614. On 553 (pg. 63 ancestry.com) is seen a Moses COX (0 1 0 0 1 | 4 1 0 1). Listed alphabetically.

Amie Akerman gives Littleton CRABTREE marrying Rebecca COX May ? 1811 in Jackson County, GA. Ann Storer gives Rebecca COX as born 1794 in Onslow Co. NC. Cecil Champenois gives Rebecca as born abt. 1780 and died 1851. 1830 census data suggests she was born between 1780 and 1790. 1840 census data suggests she was born between 1790 and 1800.

A bit of miscellaneous data. A Littleton CRABTREE had presented a petition for Pension for services in the war of 1812 in the 2nd session of the 28th congress. It’s given as being on Journal Page 64. Referred to Committee for Invalid Pensions. Then again in the 1st session of the 29th congress a petition for same was brought (journal page 202) and referred to the Committee for Invalid Pensions. The report was “adverse”. House disposed: “Laid on table”. (SOURCE: Ancestry.com) I don’t know if it might be the same Littleton CRABTREE or not.

Suggested children for Littleton and Rebecca are:

  • Irvin (Erwin, Ervin) CRABTREE b. 11 Nov. 1814 Hall County GA married Sarah Ann FAGGERT. (Hall Co. was not formed until 1818 so it is likely Irvin was born in a parent county such as Jackson Co.)
  • Jackson CRABTREE b. 1817 m. Eliza SULLIVAN
  • Alfred R. CRABTREE b. 11 March 1822 NC, d. 3 Feb 1895 at about 73, buried at Priceville Church, East of Tupelo, Lee Co., MS.
  • Littleton CRABTREE b. 1822
  • Haynes CRABTREE b. 1829 at Jones Co. MS, died 5 March 1865 at the Camp Chase POW Camp in Ohio, married Elizabeth EVANS on 7 Sept. 1853, Mobile, AL. She was born 11 Oct. 1836, died 4 Feb 1906, and is buried at Gulf Crest Cemetery at Gulf Crest, Mobile Co., AL.
  • Murphy CRABTREE b. abt. 1831 according to an 1850 census, died April 188401886 at Gulfcrest, AL. He married 17 Feb 1857 at Mobile Co. AL, Rachel SMITH.
  • Louisa CRABTREE m. Isaac CHAMPENOIS 3 Nov. 1845 at Mobile Co., AL. She was born 1818 according to an 1850 census.
  • Emma CRABTREE married John PADGETT, 9 Feb. 1846 at Mobile Co., AL.
  • Millay CRABTREE married Archibald CLARK, 24 Mayl 1853 at Mobile Co. AL. She was born 1826 according to an 1850 census.

I asked Amie Akerman what she had heard about American Indian ancestry for Rebecca Cox (there are a few rumors) and she replied, “As for Rebecca Cox being of Indian Heritage to quote my Uncle Phelan and Aunt Bea, (if you wonder why I am always quoting them, I traveled a lot in the early 80’s to visit them, and filled 6 spiral notebooks with information from them) both told me that Grandma Rebecca was a “Quaker”; I have not found any info on Rebecca’s parents or sibling’s to go any further that what I have sent you on her.”

Littleton CRABTREE Sr. can be seen in the 1830 Mobile Co. AL census. On the same page are a John FAGGETT and a Daniel FAGGETT. This Daniel FAGGETT would be the Daniel FAGGERT/FAGGARD (numerous spellings) who is the father of Sarah Ann, b. 1819, who married Irvin/Erwin CRABTREE.

NOTE: According to this there was 1 male under five in the house (b. after 1825, this is probably Haynes Crabtree b. 1829), 1 male between 5 and 10 (b. between 1820 and 1825, this would be Alfred R. b. 1822), 1 male of ten and under 15 (b. between 1815 and 1820, this would be Jackson b. 1817), 1 male of 15 and under 20 (b. between 1810 and 1815, this would be Irvin born 1814), and 1 male of 20 and under 30 (b. between 1800 and 1810). Two males between 30 and 40 (b. between 1790 and 1800). The 3 young females are all given as being under five so born between 1825 and 1830. Then there is one born 1820 to 1825 and an adult female of 40 and under 50. Louisa is perhaps the female given as born between 1820 and 1825, though an 1850 census places her as born abt. 1818. Millay or Milley is one of the females under 5, an 1850 census having her born 1826. Littleton Crabtree would be one of the two males in the 30 to 40 category, and Rebecca COX is likely the female in the 40 to 50 category.

Ervin CRABTREE is seen as Evin or Ewin in the 1840 Mississippi Newton County Census. He appears to be living next door to his father, Littleton. Two more houses down is Daniel OVERSTREET, and further down is a James OVERSTREET. James is perhaps a brother of John OVERSTREET, grandfather of Mary OVERSTREET, who married Samuel Thomas CRABTREE. Her father was Jacob.

In the 1850 Alabama Mobile census, Irvin gives himself as 36, so born 1814. NOTE that Saran Ann gives herself here as 34, born about 1815 rather than 1819.

In the 1850 Alabama Mobile census, Milley, 14, and Murphy, 19, are living with CHAMPENOIS. Louisa CRABTREE married Isaac and is the Louise in the household.
