Lucius Simmons (29 Dec 1883 – 9 Sep 1963) and Annie Knight Simmons (22 Feb 1888 – 1 Sept 1961), wedding photo, November 17 1904

I am guessing the man beside Lucius may be his brother Dewitt.

They were said to have been married at the home of Annie’s parents, Marion Thomas “Isaac” Knight and Frances “Fannie” Breland, in Franklinton, Washington Parish, Louisiana.

and
Louisa Clarinda THIGPEN

Murdock Middleton “Steve” SIMMONS was born 4 Oct 1863 in Mississippi, 5th son and 6th of 7 children of Robert “Reuben” SIMMONS and Frances (Smith) SIMMONS.

Robert married Louisa Clarinda THIGPEN. Louisa was born 7 Sept 1857 to James THIGPEN and Mary ELizabeth (Kennedy) THIGPEN.

Granddaughter Ethel Lorena only gave as M. M. “Steve” on a genealogy sheet. She gave him as born in 1868 and that he came from “near Magnolia, Mississippi?” which would be Pike County.

M. M.’s tombstone in the Lang-Simmons’ Cemetery gives him as born 4 Oct 1863 but he is observed in the 1860 census already aged 6 months. He was the 5th son and 6th of 7 children of Robert “Reuben” SIMMONS and Frances (Smith) SIMMONS.

Ethel Simmons Hennesy further stated on her grandfather that he “farmed all his life. Settled in Sheridan, LA and buried on Home Place.” She gave him as dying 21 April 1936.

Bob Ann Breland states, “Murdock Middleton Simmons, called Stephen in the census and “Steve” by his family, was born Oct. 4, 1863, died Apr. 21, 1936. (Census gives birthdate as 1859.) He was named for Murdock Middleton Wilson, his uncle. Murdock Wilson was married to Martha Smith, a sister to Frances Smith. The Wilsons came to Mississippi with with Reuben and Frances Simmons. “Steve”
married Clarinda Thigpen, born Sept. 7, 1859, died Aug. 29, 1907.”

Lucius Theodore Simmons and Annie Knight

Lucius Theodore SIMMONS and Annie KNIGHT

Lucius (also given as Lucious) Theodore SIMMONS was born 29 Dec 1883 in Franklinton, Washington Parish, LA to Murdock Middleton SIMMONS and Louisa Clarinda (Thigpen) SIMMONS. He was the the 1st son and 2nd child of 9 born to Middleton and Louisa.

Lucius married Annie KNIGHT, b. 22 Feb 1888 at Sheridan, LA., daughter of Marian (Marion) Isaac KNIGHT and Frances A. BRELAND. The two were married at the home of her parents. Molly BRELAND and Dan COOPER are given as having been attendants.

Lucius and Annie had 7 children:

  • Ethel Lorena SIMMONS b. Feb. 14 1904, married Esmond Edward HENNESY.
  • Estus “Pete” SIMMONS b. 13 Dec. 1908 at Washington Parish, LA., died 14 March 1960, married Genieva.
  • Ezra “Jodi” Williams SIMMONS, b. 8 Feb. 1913, Washington Parish, LA., died 28 Jan. 1978, Sidell, LA., married Juanita CRAIN.
  • Lloyd SIMMONS b. 20 Sept. 1916, Washington Parish, LA., d. 24 April 1964, married Willie Mae HUSSER. SOURCE: US Gen Web archives for Simmons/Pope Cemetery in Washington Parish, LA. Located in Ward 5, Washington Parish, LA., in the Sheridan Community, north of the Franklinton-Bogalusa Hwy. Off Hwy. 10 on the Pope Road. (Bob Ann BRELAND instead gives as born 20 Sept 1915, marrying Willie May CROCKETT. That they had no children.)
  • Desera “George” SIMMONS, b. 1917 at Washington Parish LA., died 1939 at Washington Parish, LA. (Bob Ann BRELAND gives him as Wilbur Desere, born Dec. 1909, died 24 Sept 1939. Married Rosalee ADAMS.

Ethel (Simmons) HENNESY wrote of Lucius that he was a farmer and carpenter and that he owed and operated a saw mill.

Lucius Simmons is described as a “farmer, miller” by Jean Kearns, a granddaughter.

“I respected (almost feared) Grandpa Simmons, but I never really felt a love for him like I did Grandpa Hennesy. He was a very good man, very religious and very stern, who enjoyed sitting on the front porch with his Chihuahua in his lap arguing political or religious issues with some of his cronies. I never saw him express or demonstrate affection toward his family. He was uneducated but very intelligent, was a hard worker, and Daddy says he was a persuasive orator in labor meetings at the paper mill in Bogalusa where they both worked at one time. He was generous, giving land to whomever of his children wanted to build near him. He was too generous with two of his sons, giving them money over and over again to get back on their feet after they had lost their jobs because of drinking. I’m sure his generosity was his way of expressing love. They would always use it to buy more alcohol! He seemed to never learn. Their drinking was a burden to the whole family.

“Grandpa built a church on some of his property across the highway from their home because there was not a church nearby and he would preach there when they were without a preacher. The church still stands and my Uncle Jim and his family are active members there. There is a Simmons cemetery on some of his land where his mother, father, uncles, aunts, both Grandma and Grandpa and their four sons and two grandsons are buried.”

MY PERSONAL PROFILE AND FAMILY OF ORIGIN, by Jean (Hennesy) Kearns, November 20, 1991.

Jean says Lucius believed women shouldn’t be schooled and didn’t permit Ethel to continue in school past the 8th grade. He hid her schoolbooks.

Though some of the sons had problems with alcohol, Jean says they were also the most “fun” of the family. Would take them to buy treats etc.

Annie was about 17 and Lucius was about 22 when Ethel was born.
Annie was 20 and Lucius was 25 when Estus was born.
Annie was 25 and Lucius was 30 when Ezra was born.
Annie was 27 and Lucius was 32 when Lloyd was born.
Annie was 29 and Lucius was 34 when George was born.
Annie was 32 and Lucius was 37 when their sixth child was born.
Annie was 35 and Lucius was 40 when their seventh child was born.

Annie Knight is also given as having been born in the Franklinton area. The Sheridan siting as the place of birth is from the Foil/Simmons Genealogy.

Jean Kearns writes of Annie (Knight) SIMMONS:

“I remember Grandma Simmons as being sad, seldom laughing, very self-giving. I loved her. I felt sorry for her. Her life seemed so hard, but my mother says she never complained about anything and never said a bad word about anyone. I often wondered if she was grieving over the death of George, her son, who died in his early twenties from a tick bite. I know she worried about her two sons who literally drank their lives away. And, there was always an undercurrent of tension between Grandma and her father. Grandpa Knight, her father, was a very successful, well-to-do farmer, and my mother feels that he almost disowned Grandma when she married Grandpa Simmons, a poor man…

“I looked forward to going to Louisiana every summer so I could spend time there with Grandma, after whom I was named, and my mother’s youngest brother and sister, Jim and “Cooter.” There seemed to always be children my age there too. They must have been great nieces and nephews who lived nearby and came to visit when we were there. I really don’t remember who they were. I do remember playing in the pastures, drinking water from the spring down in the woods, drawing water from the well on Grandma’s back porch, and going to the creek every afternoon for the coldest swim in the world. We would walk to the store at least twice a day to buy some candy or a drink. At that time I had no idea that the store had once belonged to Grandpa Hennesy.

“I loved the days at Grandma’s, which began with hot buttered biscuits covered with huckleberry preserves and thick, rich cream which she made especially for me, she said. But I dreaded for night to come. The house was large, with four bedrooms, but there were never enough beds for the children, so we slept on pallets on the living room floor. That was fun, until all the lights were out and everyone went to sleep. Then the strange noises (snoring, wheezing and outdoor farm noises) would begin and I would lie there in the dark knowing that I would never live to see another huckleberry biscuit.

“I always wondered why Daddy never stayed with us at Grandma and Grandpa Simmons’ house. He would visit for a short while and then say he had to go on to Franklinton to visit his family. I remember that Mom would get irritated with him about this sometimes. As I gathered information for this paper, Daddy, now 88 years old, told me that he never felt that Grandpa Simmons liked him or wanted him around. In fact, Grandpa had wanted Mom to marry Uncle Jewel, Daddy’s brother, rather than Daddy, and he never really accepted Daddy as part of the family. I find it ironic that it was Daddy who bought Grandpa’s farm to help them live comfortably in their old age with the guarantee that it was their home as long as they lived. I wonder if Grandpa ever realized what a wonderful man Daddy was..”

Marion Thomas “Isaac” Knight and Frances “Fannie” Breland

Image of Marion Isaac Knight from the collection of Jeff Hennesy. Photoshopped it a touch.

Marion (Marian) Isaac KNIGHT was born 25 Aug 1866 to William KNIGHT and Martha (Mary E.) NOBLE/NOBLES. He died 25 Dec. 1947.

Marion married Frances A. “Fannie” BRELAND, daughter of Elijah BRELAND and Mariah BROWN. She was born 9 May 1871 (given as from Pine, LA) and died 24 Sept. 1907.

Fannie is buried at the Nobles Cemetery at Pine.

Ethel (Simmons) HENNESY described Marion, her mother’s father, as a “full-blooded Irishman.” Which isn’t so. His grandfather, Charles KNIGHT, was born in Virginia in 1785.

Marion Knight was wealthy and disapproved of his daughter, Annie, marrying Lucius SIMMONS, who was poor. He left Annie out of his will.

Marion’s name in the Fowler/Simmons Genealogy is spelled Marion. Often it is also given as Marian.

Marion was a Mason, member of Pine Lodge No. 264, F&AM. I have a very, very poor xerox of a photo which reads, “Pine Lodge No. 264, F&AM, has quite a history–as is indicated in this old photograph which was taken July 27th 1900. The heirs of Monroe Knight donated the original photograph to the lodge. From left are James “Jockey Jim” Knight, Plummer Knight, Dr. Warner, Ira Pope, Monroe Knight, D.E. Branch, P.E. “Rev. Pink” Toney, Rev. Tom Bennett, Marian Knight, Layton Schilling, Meride Breland, James “Peg Jim” Knight, W.E. Alford, Archie Whittington, and Curtis “Boy” Miley.” So we have four Knights and a Breland in the photo.

I have some notes from Jean Kearns (granddaughter of Annie) that state that while 4 children survived there were others who were killed by typhoid.

Marion and Frances had:

  • Annie Clarinda b. 22 Feb. 1888 at Sheridan LA, married Lucius SIMMONS in 1904.

Marion’s second wife was Leah CORKERN. A Franklinton LA newspaper article, August 19th 1926, mentions a Mrs. Marion KNIGHT, daughter of Rev. C. T. CORKERN.

Monday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Gayer, Rev. C.T. Corkern died at the age of 65 years, 11 months, and 21 days.

He married 1st, Mollie Magee, sister of W.L. Magee. He later married Mrs. May Voyles, widow of Rev. Claude Voyles of Shreveport. The following children survive him, Mrs. Marion Knight, C.J. Gayer, and 1 son, John Corkern, all of Franklinton; Mrs. Iddo Crain of Hammond; Miss Annette Corkern of Magnolia; Mrs. W.M. Edwards, Texas; and Rev. W.A. Corkern of Kerns, Texas. Funeral services were held at the Ellis cemetery.

This would be Leah Lenora CORKERN, daughter of Charles Thomas CORKERN and Mary Jane MAGEE. She was b. 31 Jan 1884 in Washington Parish, LA, d. 11 July 1959, Washington Parish, LA. She is buried at the Ellis Cemetery. She and “Marion T.” are given as having married 11 Nov. 1908 in Washington Parish, LA.

Jack Kearns writes, “She was a wonderful Christian lady. She was blind, but could do just about anything in the house.”

A posted photo shows Marion, Leah, Annie, William E. Sr., Wilbur Warren and Lela Maye KNIGHT.

Photo of Murdock Middleton and Clarinda Simmons and family

Original image, a multiple generations xerox.
Courtesy of Delores Tousineau.

An attempt I made to clean up the image a bit.

And then not leave well enough (kind of) alone, though the resolution doesn’t merit it.

This family photo was made the same day as the above. No children were given but I’m going to make a stab at it. I believe the photo is made about 1900, before the birth of the youngest, James F. in 1902. The youngest boy leaning against Murdock may be Charles Jewell Simmons b. 1898, the little girl leaning against Louisa Clarinda would be Frances, b. 1896, John Benjamin b. 1894 would be the boy to the far left standing behind the youngest boy, Mary Elizabeth Simmons b. 1891 would be then the girl on the far right next to Louisa. Mary Elizabeth would be about 9. Her next sister up would be Ella b. 1888 who would be about 12 and I don’t see a girl in that age range here. Next would be Dewitt, born 1886, about 14 at the time, and would be the boy standing at the rear of the photo, behind Murdock. Lucius, b. 1883, would be about 17 and doesn’t seem to appear in the photo. The oldest, Euna Emily b. 1882, may be one of the two women to either side of Dewitt.

Annie Knight Simmons, 1904

Annie (Knight) Simmons (22 Feb 1888 – 1 Sept 1961) as a young woman. Wife of Lucius Theodore Simmons. Estimated date, around 1904.

There was no indication of photographer or date on this very damaged photo. I am guessing it was taken perhaps on the same day she married Lucius at the home of her parents, 1904 Nov 17, in Washington Parish, Louisiana. We have a wedding photo and her hairstyle and appearance looks much the same.

She’s wearing here what I think is probably a very nice and stylish dress for the time which hints of how her father was said to be fairly well to do.

I tried to do a restoration. This was just when I was beginning to work in Photoshop a number of years ago. I didn’t do a great job but I think I deserve some kudos for the effort.

Photo of Annie Knight Simmons and…

This photo was originally identified by family to show Annie Knight Simmons and the widow of Desera Simmons, Rosa Lee, at his gravesite at the Lang-Simmons Cemetery.

I have to place a caveat with the original dating of this photo which would have been 1932, at the time of Desera’ death. Annie Knight would have been 44 and I think the photo belongs more in the range of the mid 1940s.

If anyone has any information on the photo, please let me know.

The Knight Family

The Knight Family

Marian (Marion) Isaac KNIGHT and second wife Leah Corkern KNIGHT, then Annie Knight SIMMONS (married to Lucius Theodore Simmons), William E. KNIGHT Sr., Wilbur Warren KNIGHT and Lela Maye KNIGHT.

Marion was born 1866 in Louisiana and died 1947, daughter Annie was born 1888 and died 1961, son William E. was born 1889 and died 1954, Wilbur was born 1892 and died 1970. I have no information on Lela Maye.

I’m having difficulty dating this photo. Might it be from about 1940 when Marion was 74 an Annie was 52?

Family of Lucius Theodore Simmons and Annie Knight, c. 1911

Family of Lucius Theodore Simmons and Annie Clarinda Knight. Lucius was born 1883 Dec 29 in the Franklinton area of Washington Parish, Louisiana and died 1963 Sep 9 in Bogalusa. Annie was born 1888 Feb 22 in Sheridan, Washington Parish, Louisiana and died 1961 Sep 1 in New Orleans. The pair were married 1904 Nov 17 at the home of Annie’s parents, Marion Thomas Isaac Knight and Frances Breland. Lucius’ parents were Murdock Middleton Simmons and Louisa Clarinda Thigpen.

The order is Annie Knight Simmons with Ethel (Hennesy), Estus, and Lucius holding Desera (I did have Ezra for some reason but I think it must be Desera). As Desera was born in 1910, I think the photo was made about 1911. Ethel would be about 5 and Estus about 3. Lucius would be abt 28 and Annie would be about 22.

The drapery in the background in an outdoor setting leads me to think this was either taken at a fair or by a traveling photographer. A photo of Lucius’ sister Mary Elizabeth Simmons with her husband, Milton Burns Bateman, may show the same drapery, and Mary is dressed similarly to Annie, so the photos may have been taken at the same time.

Lucius and Annie Knight Simmons 50th wedding anniversary

Lucius and Annie Knight Simmons were married 1904 Nov 17 at the home of her parents in Washington Parish, Louisiana. The anniversary celebration would have taken place about 1954 Nov 17 in Washington Parish.
The photos were presented in a little blue flip book of snapshots. The individuals are the celebrated couple and their children.
