Catherine Brewer and Rachel Henderson

Feeble attempt at retouching

This photo of Catherine Hedden Brewer with daughter Rachel Jane Brewer Henderson was supplied by Everett Henderson Jr. and is believed to have been taken in the 1880s. Rachel Jane Brewer, bo. 1852 Oct 6 in Terra Haute, Vigo, Indiana, married Atwell Henderson August 29 1866 in Moultrie County, Illinois. About 1872 they migrated to Chautauqua County, Kansas from Neosho County. Catherine Hedden lived with her second husband, John Foster in Neosho until his death in 1895, so this photo could either have been taken in Neosho County or Chautauqua County.

A late 1880s, early 1890s hairstyle may have had Rachel Jane’s hair curled up and over in the front, similar to this photo of Bettie Brewer Noyes from 1891. Because I couldn’t do much myself restoring this photo, I never really completed trying to work on this photo and so never tried working on the hair.

This is a nice example of messed up. I did the photoshopped reconstructions many years ago and as one can see I was working off an extremely degraded image and trying to see what “might” have been. What “might” have the man been like in it. What “might” have the chair been like. And was that a rolled up newspaper there? No. I think not. Or maybe there is! I still can’t tell! But I was convinced at the time that it appeared to be so, that there was a rolled up newspaper behind the man, and I tried to reconstruct it as I believed it to appear.

And the chair! I couldn’t have done a more botched up job trying to figure out what was going on with that chair.

I’m now even confused as to which Brewer this is. I have Daniel Brewer on some copies and David Brewer on others. I do believe this is Daniel Levi Brewer, husband of Catherine Hedden, born 1823 in Mercer Co. KY and died April 20 1868 at Osage Mission, Neosho, Kansas. The photo looks like it was likely taken in the early 1860s which would place it as likely having been taken at a studio in Putnam County, Indiana.

Marriage License of Catherine Hedden Brewer and John Foster

Catherine Hedden married first Daniel Levi Brewer on March 30 1843 in Kentucky. He died April 20 1868 in Osage Mission, Neosho, Kansas. On Dec 26 1869, in Neosho county, Kansas, she married 2nd John W. Foster. He had been previously married to Hannah Oury who had died 1868 Jan 31 in Neosho county, Kansas. Following their marriage, the children in the household, in 1870 were Alexander, Mary, Edward, Catherine and Jennie, all children of Foster, who had been born between 1849 and 1860. With the exception of the youngster Brewer daughter, the Brewer children were out of the household before the death of their father. The youngest, Matilda, was only 13 years and 19 days old when she married, on Feb 19 1869, to Russell Henderson who was ten years her elder. A number of the Brewers tended to marry far younger than I’ve observed in other families. Matilda’s sister, Rachel, was 13 and 10 months when she married Atwell Henderson, brother of Russell. Delana Fowler was only 14 when she married David Nathaniel Brewer, who was 5 years her elder.

Edward Foster married Minnie Catherine White, who was the daughter of his step-sister Sarah Elizabeth Brewer and Elias White. She was 15 when they married and he was about 17 years older than she.

Daniel and Catherine Brewer reconstruction

Daniel Levi BREWER was born 25 September 1823 in Mercer Co. KY, the 8th of 9 children, and the last of 4 sons born to Daniel A. BREWER Sr. of KY and Nancy SMITH. Nancy was 28 and Daniel Sr. was 29 when Daniel Levi was born.

Daniel married Catherine HEDDEN on 30 March 1843 in KY. Catherine was a daughter of William HEDDEN and Rachel VAN CLEAVE . She was about 21 and he about 22. Their first child, Sarah Elizabeth, was born within the first year, on December 22, 1843. They would have apparently 9 children altogether, born between 1843 and 1858.

There is purportedly a Kentucky marriage document for Daniel BREWER and Catherine HEDDEN. Nancy Benton, to whom a good bit of family information was passed along, mentions it as a supporting document, and the first 4 children are given as born in KY in the family history. However, Daniel A. BREWER appears in the 1840 Johnson County IN census. A Daniel BREWER is in the 1850 Putnam County IN census, and then in the 1860 Putnam Co. IN census, Daniel BREWER gives all his children as having been born in Indiana.

The family history reports the family went to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas, shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. This is also reportedly how Robert Harrington JOHNSON, grandfather of Delana FOWLER, wife of Daniel’s son David Nathaniel, died. I have wondered, as well as has Nancy Benton, if the death of Robert Harrington JOHNSON became somehow mixed up with Daniel Levi. No family history however was had on Delana’s grandparents, the genealogy originally ending with her mother, Mary Jane JOHNSON.

There is also confusion on where Daniel Levi died. He has also been given as dying in Fillmore Indiana.

Osage Mission was on land that wasn’t ceded over until 1865, and the ceding not proclaimed until 1867, but in anticipation of this a number of settlers had already moved in. 88 people resided there in 1860 and over 10,000 by 1870.

Following are the children of Daniel and Catherine:

  1. Sarah Elizabeth, b. 22 Dec. 1843, d. 22 Oct. 1881 at about 38. She married twice. Her first marriage was 1867 to Elias WHITE, b. 1809 or 1791, d. 1873. They had three children: Perry Morgan WHITE, 21 April 1869 – Feb 1944; Minnie Catherine WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 1937; Minta WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 24 Jan 1872. Sarah Elizabeth married (2) George W. FLING on 1 Jan 1874.
  2. William H., b. 18 Nov. 1845.
  3. Nancy, b. 11 Nov. 1847.
  4. James Daniel, b. 13 April 1849, KY to 18 July 1916, Niotaze, KS. He married, on 16 Sept. 1867, at Catholic Mission, Neosho, Kansas, Amanda ULHMAN (also given as Maude Mary OULMAN). He married (2), on 26 April 1887, Sedan KS, Anna Dora LIAFE.Notes for James Daniel Brewer:

Served in Union Army during Civil War. Worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a
carpenter and helped build the first depot at Kansas City, Kansas, as well as the one at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He met a girl named “A Maude Mary An Oulman” living in Missouri. She was an orphan living with relatives. The family did not want her to marry James so she was placed in a Catholic convent somewhere in Missouri. She was unhappy there, and James stole her away and they went to Kansas City to be married.

They later moved to Niotaze, Kansas and purchased 80 acres. They also had a general store there. He took a partner who ran the store while he continued to do carpenter work for the railroad. Built the depots at Sedan and Caney, Kansas. His partner absconded with $10,000 leaving James holding the bag of debts.

In 1884 he married Anna Dora who was 19 years younger than he. They moved into OK Territory and he built depots at Shawnee and Meeker, OK. When the land was opened for settlement he drove a buggy with his son, Daniel, and a friend, Charlie Brown, into Lincoln County and homesteaded.

The 1880 Chautauqua Sedan Township census shows James D. BREWER as 31 b. IN, parents b. KY, his wife, Amanda is 28 b. IN, her father from Hesse Cassel and mother from KY. Children are all born in KS: Elizabeth 11, Daniel 8, Edward 4, Atwill 1.

  5. David Nathaniel, b. 31 Oct. 1850 in IN, married Delana FOWLER. My family’s direct line.
  6. Rachel Jane, b. 6 Oct. 1852 in IN, d. 26 Sept. 1927 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and is buried in Niotaze. She married, 289 August 1866, Atwill (Atwell) HENDERSON b. 28 August 1844 at Beaufort Co. NC.
  7. Brewer b. 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, died 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN.
  8. Matilda C., b. 31 Jan. 1856, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN., died 14 July 1873 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and was buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery “3-4 miles north of the original home place” (Ed HENDERSON). She married, 19 Feb. 1869 at Neosho Co. KS, Russell HENDERSON, b. 26 May 1846, Beaufort Co., or Wake Co. NC. He died 8 May 1921 at Niotaze and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze. Russell married (2) Harriet RECARD b. IN; he married (3) Jennie. See Rachel for more information on the HENDERSON family. Matilda’s family had the oral history that she was Cherokee but I’ve not found anything to confirm this.
  9. Brewer, b. 13 Jan 1858, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, and died 13 Jan 1858 at same.

William G. Cutler’s “History of the State of Kansas” relates the
following on Osage Mission:

Previous to the organization of a town company or the laying out of a town site two buildings had been erected here, one by L. P. Foster & Co., a log one, in which a store was opened and managed by the “Morgan boys,” and a framebuilding erected by S. A. Williams, of Fort Scott, in which his son, Augustus D. Williams, kept a store. The movements were made in 1866, in anticipation of the starting of a town. A Town Company was organized consisting of George A. Crawford, S. A. Williams, C. W. Blair, Benjamin McDonald and John Nandier, a town site laid out and called Osage Mission., in December, 1867. By the side of it and to the west another town site was laid out and called Catholic Mission. On this town site a small store was opened by S. J. Gilmore, in a log building known then and still remembered as “Castle Thunder;” this store was opened in 1865. On Osage Mission townsite the Town Company erected a building on the corner of County and Market streets into which A. D. Williams moved his stock of goods in 1867, in which he kept the postoffice, with C. H. Howard as deputy. About the same time L. P. Foster & Co., erected a two story frame building across the street and a little north of the present site of the Southern Hotel. Joseph Roycroft built a log saloon near where now stands the City Bank; Middaugh and Dohnan came down from Topeka, and built a store where L. Steadman’s store now stands, in 1867; James Roycroft erected a boarding house, the first in town, on the southeast corner of County and Market Streets, and during the summer John Nandier built the first hotel, the Neosho House, a large two story frame, long known as the finest hotel building in Southern Kansas. Not long after this Nathaniel Tucker started a store near “Castle Thunder,” in the building now occupied as a dwelling by Daniel Zehner, and about the same time, perhaps a short time previously, Dr. J. B. Lamb started a store also in Catholic Mission. Marston & Ulmer, from Iowa, opened a furniture store in 1868. J. M. Boyle, from Fort Scott, opened a hardware store just north of L. P. Foster & Co.’s store, and on the southwest corner of County and Main streets, Ryan & Roycroft started a general store about the same time.

The first lawyer in the town was C. F. Hutchings, in 1867, the first physician, Dr. A. F. Neely, about the same time, and the first Protestant minister was Rev. A. Hitchcock. The first birth was that of a son to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Noble, 1868. From the first the growth of the town was vigorous and rapid. In August, 1868, it contained eight dry goods stores, three drug stores, one hardware store, two boot and shoe stores, four blacksmith shops, and numerous other business establishments, and a population of nearly nine hundred. From this time until the building of the railroad the growth of the town was steady. It was the center of three lines of stages; one to Fort Scott, one to Humboldt and the other to Chetopa. When these stages arrived all was life and animation. Each stage was a Concord coach drawn by four fine large horses, and the driver’s voice and importance, and the crack of his whip served to raise the excitement to the highest pitch, and is still vividly remembered. A more complete history of the town will be seen in the sketches of its individual industries and institutions…

…The first school in Osage Mission was the Mission School, begun by Father Schoenmakers in 1847. This, however, was an institution devoted to the education of Indians and in the interests of the Catholic Church.

23. Death: 1868 Apr 20.
There is some uncertainty as to place of Daniel Levi Brewer’s death. In a family sheet Nancy Benton was given, Daniel was given as dying in Filmore IN.

“Why, if he had moved to IL and then to KS? Did he go back for some reason and die there and Catherine and the kids stayed in KS? Also, the story mother told about him being killed when the oxen ran off–did she possibly have the grandfathers mixed up? According to the story in the McClean County, IL, history, that is how Robert Johnson, grandfather of Delana died. It seems strange that both of them would have died the same way.”

Catherine (Hedden) TILLEY, sister of Gilbert Hedden (Catherine Hedden BREWER’s grandfather) died 1861 in Putnam Co. IN and sister Susannah also died in Putnam Co. IN in 1885. Sister Mary died in Hendricks Co IN in 1885, and Ann died in Hendricks Co. IN in 1833.

Another sibling, Samuel, married Ruth GRIFFIN, and they had a son John who married Ann TILLEY. Their son, John was born 12 June 1846 in Putnam County IN. This Ann TILLEY appears to have been the daughter of Catherine (Hedden TILLEY and Lazarus TILLEY.

So there was a migration of the HEDDEN family in general, and associated families, to INDIANA.

Married in Kentucky. Lived in Indiana at one time. Moved to Bloomington, ILL. Came to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. Of German descent. (Pansy Bryant, granddaughter)

Catherine was born 21 Feb 1822 in Kentucky. She married Daniel Levi Brewer at about the age of 21, 30 March 1843, in Kentucky. They had 9 children between 1843 and 1858. They were on the 1850 and 1860 Putnam Co. census and relocated to Neosho Co., KS sometime before Daniel Levi Brewer died in 1868. After Daniel’s death, Catherine married John FOSTER in Neosho Co. KS in 1869. She died 25 May 1903 in Greenfield Missouri at the age of about 81.

Catherine’s mother was Rachel VAN CLEAVE. The VAN CLEAVE name appears repeatedly in these families. Charity, a sister of Daniel Levi BREWER, married Jesse VAN CLEAVE. James HEDDEN, Catherine’s grandfather’s brother, married Katherine VAN CLEAVE.

Elizabeth Jane “Bettie” Brewer was born 1877 in Liberal, Barton, Missouri to David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana L. Jane Fowler. In 1895, she married Ray Noyes, son of James Allen Noyes and Caroline Atwell.

The picture would have been taken in 1891 at Moore studio in Liberal. Another studio operating at about that time and later was the Fritts photo studio.

Sometimes with retouching, making the image a little livelier, bringing back in some depth, I both clean and grunge it up a little.

Delana Louise Fowler Brewer, daughter of John B. Fowler b. 1827 and Mary Jane Johnson b. 1832 married David Nathaniel Brewer. She was born 1854 at Bloomington, McLean, Illinois and died 1939 at Oscaloosa, Dade, Missouri. This photo would likely have been taken in Barton County, Missouri.

The Five Grandfathers Photo Showing Daniel A. Brewer

L to R top, John Wesley Dunlavy (“Grandfather Dunlavy” b. 7/9/1831, d. 5/27/1916), Nathaniel Sanford Straughan (“Great grandfather Straughan”, b.4/42/1810 d.10/28/1898), Morris Henderson Oliver (“Grandfather Oliver”, b.3/6/1809, d.11/22/1890)
First row L to R Francis Dunlavy (“Great grandfather Dunlavy”, b.1/6/1803, d ?1885), Edwin Wesley Dunlavy, age 5, Daniel Brewer (“Great great grandfather Brewer”, b. 3/1/1784, d. 4/9/1881).

John Houk writes the following on the this photo and another related to it:

I call this the “Five Generation” photograph. There are actually two copies. Both are tintype. One copy is about 2×3 inches. Dark but beautifully preserved. The hand-tinted pink is easily seen on the cheeks. The second copy is larger, 5×6 inches. It is a mirror image of the larger photo. Not as well preserved.

The photos were found January 2003 in a cardboard moving box in the basement of my mother’s home, Bernice Wuethrich Houk. Howard Jacob Houk (b 10/13/1912, d. 12/30/1990), my father, was the executor of the estates of his maternal aunt and uncle, Lora Dunlavy (b. 9/11/1877, d.6/8/1958) and Edwin Wesley Dunlavy (b 6/25/1874, d.3/6/1953). Neither had any direct descendants, my father was their closest relative, and explains why I am currently in possession of the photo. The basement boxes contain some of what he saved from their homes. The photo was probably found in Lora Dunlavy’s home in 1958. The “Five Generation” photos were found in a smaller keepsake box within the larger box and contained other seemingly prized mementos and the Dunlavy photos, particularly baby photos of Lora and Edwin. The “Five Generation” photo had no identification with it so what I state below is educated speculation.

Next to the “five generation” photo was another tintype photo within an envelope with handwriting on it. I call this the “Five Grandfathers” photo. Knowing who is in this photo is critical to understanding the “Five Generation” photo. On the envelope is written, “Edwin Wesley Dunlavy, Grandfather Dunlavy, Great Grandfather Dunlavy, Grandfather Oliver, Great Grandfather Straughan, Great Great grandfather Brewer.” In the photo is a young boy with four men in beards. The handwritten note does not state which bearded gentleman is which grandfather. A letter written by Edwin in 1940 states, “I have a photo standing beside my Great grandfather Dunlavy”. I believe this is the photo he alluded to. I believe, based on other identified photos, that the gentleman in this photo are Top row, L to R top, John Wesley Dunlavy (“Grandfather Dunlavy” b. 7/9/1831, d. 5/27/1916), Nathaniel Sanford Straughan (“Great grandfather Straughan”, b.4/42/1810 d.10/28/1898), Morris Henderson Oliver (“Grandfather Oliver”, b.3/6/1809, d.11/22/1890), First row L to R Francis Dunlavy (“Great grandfather Dunlavy”, b.1/6/1803, d ?1885), Edwin Wesley Dunlavy, age 5, Daniel Brewer (“Great great grandfather Brewer”, b. 3/1/1784, d. 4/9/1881). All of the men were known to be living in Putnam or Johnson Co., Indiana in 1879, the year I believe this photo was taken.

Returning to the “Five Generation” photo, a young man is in the lower left. He appears to be Edwin Wesley Dunlavy, judged by other identified photos taken at the same time of Edwin. The old man in the center appears to be Daniel Brewer (b 3/1/1784, d. 4/9/1881), based on the identity of “Great Great Grandfather Brewer” being in the above mentioned “grandfathers photo”. Behind Edwin is apparently Howard Huston Dunlavy (b.6/17/1854, d.1/23/1922), again based on similarity to other identified photos of the same period. Standing next to Daniel Brewer appears to be Nancy Jane Straughan (b.5/10/1834, d. 2/21/1901), mother of Howard Dunlavy, again based on identified photos of her about the same time. The women to her right is not found in any other photos. When I first found the photo and pieced together the first four I wondered who the this person to be. It was only when I kept looking at my family tree that I discovered that it must be Mary “Polly” Brewer (b.9/1808, d.3/25/1883), mother of Nancy Straughan, daughter of Daniel Brewer, and husband of Nathaniel Sanford Straughan. This would make this a five generation photograph. All of these persons were living and residing in Putnam or Johnson Co, Indiana in the 1870s.

I believe the photo was taken in 1877 maybe at Christmas time. Edwin was born in June 1874. Daniel Brewer died in 1881. So we know the photo is taken between those dates. In the “Five Grandfathers” photo Edwin appears to be a year or two older and Daniel Brewer is in that photo too. Howard Huston Dunlavy left for Missouri to preach as a Methodist circuit rider in December 1877. It would be a good time to have such a photo taken, as it was uncertain when Howard would return or how long Daniel might live. Christmas might be a time when all the family would gather, especially if Howard was leaving for Missouri. If the photo were taken December 1877, then Edwin would be 3 years 6 months, which is consistent with his appearance in the photo.

I think John Wesley Dunlavy and his wife Nancy Straughan may have been the moving forces behind the “Five Generation” and the “Five Grandfathers” photo. We know that John Wesley Dunlavy was interested in genealogy, and he may have recognized the significance of photographing the five grandfathers together. Nancy Straughan was the middle person in “Five Generation” photo, in her prime and probably with the assets and wherewithal to make such an event happen. But this is pure speculation on my part. I do have a few boxes of thus far mostly unread correspondence written by the ancestors in the photographs. Maybe one of these letters will shed more light on the subject.

The photo was sent by John Houk, who identifies the individuals, from left to right, as Howard Huston Dunlavy (b. 1854), Edwin (child) (b. 1874), Daniel A. Brewer (b. 1784), Nancy Jane Straughan (b. 1834), and Mary “Polly” Brewer (b. 1808).

Daniel A. Brewer is in our direct line. He lived to 1881. This photo would have been taken about 1877.

Not a great job photoshopping this, but OK. Did it a number of years ago when I was first trying to learn to restore photos and was getting a little better at it.

Another view of the Noyes home at Liberal, Missouri, which appears to have been taken some years later. The tree has been removed.
