Belle Sparks McKenney obit

Belle Sparks McKenney was the daughter of James Sparks and Carrie Burch, and wife of George W. McKenney Jr.

Larry McCombs supplied Belle’s obituary:

Mrs. G. W. McKenney

Belle M. SPARKS, daughter of James and Carrie SPARKS, was born January 14, 1868, in Shelby County Illinois, and departed this life, December 28, 1935, at the home of her son, J. A. MCKENNEY in Sedan at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 14 days.

She, with her parents, came to Kansas in 1873, where they settled on a claim on Limestone Prairie, where she lived until June 3, 1883, when she was united in marriage to George W. McKENNEY at Elgin, Kansas.

To this union, four children were born: James Albert, of Sedan; Mabel Clair TRIPP of Sidler, Okla; and two daughters, Cleo May, who died in childhood; and Carrie Isabel HAMPTON who preceded her mother in death a few years ago.

She, together with her husband, united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Kay County, Oklahoma in 1897. She later transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal church of Sedan, where she was a member.

She was a member of both the Rebeckah and Eastern Star Lodges.

Besides her companion and children, she leaves to mourn her death, two sisters, Mrs. Mary TRIPP and Mrs. Martha THOMAS, both of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; eight grand-children and two great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was a loving wife and mother and a friend to all who knew her.

Funeral services were conducted at the United Brethren church at Chautauqua, Kansas, at 3:00 o’clock p.m., Sunday, December 29, 1935, with Rev. Howard C. BENTON officiating, assisted by Rev. WILSON.

A mixed quartet composed of Misses Dorothy TULLOSS, Inez BUTTERFIELD, B. J. FUNK and T. E. HESS, rendered the following numbers: “Asleep in Jesus,” “In the Garden” and “The City Foursquare.” They were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. J. O. TULLOSS.

A short memorial service was conducted by the Easter Star Lodge at the church.

The pall-bearers were: Arthur BRUNGER, G. K. CROCKETT, C. M. HUNT, J. M. GWALTNEY, Wm. BRUNER and A. B. COOVER.

Those from out-of-town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. F. B. TRIPP and daughter, Georgia, of Shidler; Mrs. Mary TRIPP, Mrs. Martha THOMAS, and Mrs. Nannie WHITEHORN of Pawhuska; Mrs. Adda MCWHIRT and Mr. Harry MCWHIRT of Hominy; Mrs. Hattie MOORE of Oklahoma City; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph SPRAY of Catoosa, L. C. MCKENNEY of Ponca City; Thelma MCKENNEY of Wichita; Mr. and Mrs. Paul BLAKE of Shidler; Mr. B. COOK of Kaw City; and Mr. CAMPBELL of Ponca City.

Interment was in the Chautauqua cemetery with Baird Funeral Home in charge.

It may be incorrect but Mabel Claire’s obituary gives the family as having moved to Pawhuska OK when she was young, which would have been in Osage Indian Territory. But Belle’s obituary places them in Kay County, next to the Osage Indian Territory, in 1897, the year Carrie Isabel was born.

McKenney Bible Images

Thanks to my cousins for sending photocopies of these pages to me.

Lloyd McKenney’s bible was used for recording some family history. I didn’t see it until about 2003. The genealogy I received as a child wasn’t in the bible, it was instead on loose paper, but in the case of the Hackney and McKenney families it was much as in the bible. The Crockett’s went back more generations.

We have a page recording the bible was a gift from a Rev. Paul Barth of the First Luther Church of Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1944.

All the below images link to larger images.

The below page records a brief history of Samuel and Sadie Elizabeth Hackney Crockett, written by Sadie on Sep 29, 1931, transcribed by Lloyd into the bible.

The below page is Lloyd’s recording of the McKenney line from George W. McKenney and Isabel. A good bit of info was missing on the family at that time.

The below page concerns again the Hackneys and also the Crocketts.

Lloyd notes a trip made to Tennessee to try to verify the Crockett genealogy.

Lloyd writes of the gift of the bible to him and that his sister, Thelma, had it rebound for him.

Lloyd’s notes on bible verses.

I’m going to cover a lot of ground here with these families, and it gets a bit complex.

Mary Elizabeth Sparks and First Husband Samuel McCormick

Mary Elizabeth Sparks was born 1857 June 13 in Indiana to James E. Sparks and Carrie E. (Cary Ann) Burch. She married first, about 1872, in Kansas, Samuel McCormick who was born about 1852 in Indiana.

The best possible I’ve had so far for Samuel McCormick is in an 1870 census in Johnson, Knox, Indiana, but it’s yet unconfirmed if this is the right Samuel, and may not be.

Francis Partch writes:

“My great grandfather was Samuel MCCORMICK, born about 1852, and was supposed to have driven a wagon from somewhere near the Wabash River to Kansas for a James and Carrie SPARKS. Samuel married Mary SPARKS about 1872 and they had children James, George and Carrie listed on the 1850 census for the town of Belleville, Chautauqua County, KS. They later had Katherine, and a set of twins Weltha and Amanda. (Amanda was my grandmother.)”

“Sam MCCORMICK died in the 1880’s and Mary MCCORMICK later married James Preston TRIPP and they had a son Johnny who had an accident during childhood which caused a paralysis. He walked somehow with his hands. Family tradition said the family was related to Cyrus MCCORMICK, the invented of the reaper. I believe Mary MCCORMICK had a maiden name of SPARKS. She also had two sisters with first names of Martha (who married THOMAS) and Belle who married MCKINNEY. My grandmother was Amanda MCCORMICK who married Conner and they moved to CO. He died in 1915 and then Amanda married Sherrill WEST in Springfield, Colorado on May 10, 1920.”

In 1875, Samuel and Mary are living not far from James Sparks and Carrie, the parents of Mary.

I’m unable to locate the pair in the 1885 census in Kansas, indicating they were probably then in Oklahoma.

Children of Sam and Mary were:

  1. George Gus McCormick b. 1874 July in Kansas
  2. James McCormick b. 1876 in Kansas. Died about 1905 in El Paso, Texas.
  3. Katherine “Carrie” McCormick b. abt. 1879 in Kansas. Katherine is understood by Frances Partch’s father as having married an Ed McMann. He is possibly the Edward McMahoney boarding in the household of Kate and siblings in the 1900 census (see below). Chautauqua County, Kansas Marriage books give Catherine McCormick, living in Pawhuska, marrying 1901 Feb 9 to Edward H. McMahon. They had three children in the 1910 census, Edna B. 8, Floyd E. 6 and Gordon E. 7/12, in Pawhuska where they ran a rooming house, but by 1920 Ed is in Tulsa with 45 year old Allie b. Illinois for a wife, a 17 year old Floyd in the household and a 10 year old Allie. The mother of both children is given as born in Illinois. I’m assuming that Catherine had died, but I don’t know yet where or when. She isn’t buried in the Pawhuska Cemetery.
  4. May McCormick b. 1881 November in Kansas married Antwine Rodman on 1898 July 4 in Chautauqua County, Kansas. The “Osage Star” reported on May’s death: Mrs. May Rodman died at the home of Peter Spirling, Saturday morning March 11, from chronic Suppurative Salpigitis [sic], age twenty-three. The disease was of nine years standing, and deceased had been confined to her bed almost continually for the last five months. She was a sister of James McCormack who died a few days since at El Paso, Texas. [The Osage Journal 18 Mar 1905]
  5. Weltha b. Dec 1884 in Kansas. The Chautauqua County, Kansas marriage books give her as living in Sedan and marrying a Harry Jennings of Sedan on 5 June 1906, however I’ve not found them in the 1910 census and in 1920 and 1930 Harry is living with birth family and gives himself as single.
  6. Amanda “Mandy” Emelia McCormick b. 1884 Dec 13 in Kansas, died 1949 June 11 in Springfield, Baca County, Colorada (buried at Minneapolis Cemetery north of Walsh, Colorado) married first Elmer T. Conner 1899 Dec. 24 in Chautauqua Co. Kansas, then Sherrill West. I’ll write of this family in another post.

Samuel McCormick died in 1887, the exact date unknown.

The Birth Family of James Preston “Jim” Tripp, Mary’s 2nd Husband

On 1889 Dec 6 at Pawhuska, Osage, Oklahoma, Mary married 2nd James Preston “Jim” Tripp, son of Horace Baron Tripp and Elizabeth N. Wood. They would have one son together, John Lee “Johnny” born Oct 14 1900 at Pawhuska. Johnnie married Della Beeson Dec 16 1933 in Osage County and died 1974 April 3 at Pawhuska. Both he and Della are buried at the Pawhuska City Cemetery.

Johnny had an accident in childhood which had caused him to be paralyzed. He learned to walk with his hands.

Horace and his wife, Elizabeth, were both born in Newry, Oxford, Maine. Horace’s family is in the 1850 census in Lima, Adams, Illinois, then in 1860 he has married to Elizabeth and is in the census again there, but I can’t find their marriage in the Illinois online database. Serving in the 18 Illinois Infantry, Company D, as a private, Horace died in the Civil War and his wife and two children, James and Rufus, moved to the Hewins, Chautauqua Co. KS area in the 1860s or 1870s.

The Drakes, Step Family of James Preston Tripp

What happens then is fuzzy. It seems Elizabeth married an Isaac N. Drake who was 12 years her junior, a son of Ithamer Drake and Mary Ann McCalip, who were married in Shelby, Indiana. James Preston Tripp would be “William” in the below census.

Isaac and Elizabeth had 4 children who would have been half-brothers then of James Preston Tripp. (1) John W. Drake b. 1872 Oct. married a Bertha M. Pugh 1892 Jan 31 in Chautauqua. (2) Charley Drake married Hattie Pugh, a sister of Bertha. (3) Frank L. b. abt. 1875 married Mattie D. (4) Mary H. b. 1877.

James Preston Tripp’s First Marriage to Jennie M. “Susan” McWhirt

Now, returning to James Preston Tripp. He had been married previously to Jennie M. “Susan” McWhirt, b. 1862 in Illinois, daughter of Cornelius Sullivan McWhirt and Mary L. O’Brine. She was a sister of Samuel Alvin McWhirt who married Addie Mae McKenney abt 1881.

James and Jennie had the following children:

  1. Franklin B. Tripp b. 1884 March 17 in , Osage, Oklahoma Indian Territory, married Mabel Clair McKenney. (I’ll cover this family in a separate post.)
  2. Nannie Lee Tripp b. 1886 Jan 4 in Missouri, died 1957 July 16 and was buried at the Pawhuska Cemetery. On March 30 1904 she married John Whitehorn b. 1885 Jan 1 on the Osage Reserve, died 1939 Jan 27 and was buried at the Pawhuska Cemetery. They had 5 children: Arthur James, Charles, Wuanita, Christine, John M. and Walker K. They were apparently divorced and John was remarried to a Flora in the 1930 census.
  3. Ida Rae b. 1896 in Missouri, died after 1930, on 1907 Oct 7 married James Alfred Thomas, son of Philemon Thomas and Martha Catherine Sparks. (I’ll cover this family in another post.)
  4. Dessie Mae. b. abt. 1887 in Kansas, died 1967, buried at the Pawhuska Cemetery, married Francis Marion Roebuck. Francis Roebucks parents, Thomas Jefferson Roebuck and Lydia Ann Bailey, were married Shelby County, Indiana.
  5. Fred Tripp b. abt. 1892 in Oklahoma
  6. Jessie F. b. 1893 in Oklahoma

James and Jennie appear in the 1885 Center, Chautauqua Co., Kansas census together, but not in 1895 so I’m assuming by then they were in Oklahoma.

Census Data Following the Marriage of James Preston Tripp to Mary Elizabeth Sparks McCormick

In 1900 we find James Preston Tripp with his 2nd wife, Mary Elizabeth Sparks. Both had been married previously and it’s not uncommon in such situations to find children from those previous marriages not all in the household. At the time of their marriage, Mary’s eldest, George, would have been 25, James would have been 24, Katherine would have been 20, May would have been 18 (she had married in 1898 to Antwine Rodman), Weltha would have been 15 and Amanda would have been 15 (twins). James’ son Frank would have been 15, daughter Nannie would have been 13, Dessie Mae would have been 12, and Ida Rae would have been 3.

The 1900 Osage Oklahoma census shows on page 15B, Mary Elizabeth’ children by Sam MCCORMICK, George, James, Kate and Wealthie are in household 270 with an Edward McMahoney who I believe to have married Kate. Addie McKenney McWhirt is in household 273 with her family. Daughter Amanda is married to Elmer Conner and observed in household 332. James Preston Tripp and Mary Elizabeth are in household 337. James Tripp’s half brother, John W. Drake, is in household 338.

Franklin Tripp Jr. is in the James Preston Tripp and Mary Elizabeth Tripp household, as is James Preston Tripp’s youngest daughter, Ida Rae, but she is given as 10 rather than 4, and 14 year old Nannie and 13 year old Dessie aren’t observed. A 7 year old Jessie F. is in the household.

1900 Osage Indian Reservation, Oklahoma

Mary’s children by Sam MCCORMICK are in household 270. Addie MCKENNEY MCWHIRT is in household 273 with her fmaily. James Preston TRIPP and Mary SPARKS MCCORMICK TRIPP are in household 337 beside John DRAKE.

James and Carrie Burch Sparks

Photo of James Sparks and Carrie Burch Sparks courtesy of Francis Partch
Location would be Chautauqua Co., Kansas. I’m going to give a tentative date of 1902, around the time of their 50th wedding anniversary.

James E. Sparks was born about 1832 in Indiana and died 1927 in Chautauqua County, Kansas. He married 1852 March 28 in Martin County, Indiana to Carrie E. (Cary Ann) Burch born 1835 in Greene County, Indiana, died 1917 in Chautauqua County Kansas. They are both buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Belleville, Chautauqua County, Kansas.

James E. Sparks was the son of James Sparks and Mary Ann Ellis. Carrie was the daughter of Joseph Burch Jr. and Elizabeth Gardner.

According to the Martin Co. IN Marriage Database at Rootsweb, James married Carrie (Cary) BURCH, March 28 1852. (Source: Martin Co. IN Marriage Database Rootsweb. Book 1 page 135.). Francis PARTCH, another descendant, has stated that Carrie was an ELLIS. It appears that Carrie’s mother was instead an ELLIS.

The family is given in Belle Sparks McKENNEY’s obituary as having moved to Limestone Prairie in Chautauqua Co. KS in 1873

According to the 1910 census, James and Carrie had 9 children. We know of the following:

  1. John L. Sparks, born Dec 1852 in Indiana, died 1919 and is buried in the Pawhuska Cemetery, Pawhuska, Osage County, Oklahoma.
  2. Mary Elizabeth Sparks b. 1857 June 13 in Indiana, died 1939 Nov 28 in Pawhuska, Osage County, Oklahoma, married (1) in 1872 in Kansas to Samuel McCormick b. abt. 1852 in Indiana, died 1887. She married (2) James Preston “Jim” Tripp who was born abt 1863 and died 1928. I write of their families in another post.
  3. Martha Catherine was born 1859 Oct in Indiana and died 1942 Aug 14 in Osage County, Oklahoma. She married 1878 June 24 in Sedan, Chautauqua County, Kansas to Philemon Thomas b. 1857 July 14 in Monroe County, Iowa, and died 1936 May 21 in Osage County, Oklahoma. I write of this family in a different post.
  4. Belle M. Sparks b. 1868 Jan 14 in Shelby County, Illinois, died 1935 Dec 28 in Sedan, Chautauqua County, Kansas, married 1883 June 3 in Elgin, Chautuauqua County, Kansas to George Washington McKenney Jr. born 1861 Sept 2 in Iowa, died 1947 March3 in Sedan, Chautauqua County, Kansas. Direct line.
  5. William E. Sparks b. 1876 Aug 26 in Belleville, Chautauqua County, Kansas, died 1904 June 7. He is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Belleville, Chautauqua County, Kansas.

His father, George W., is given as James W. For some reason Carrie’s mother-in-law appears to be enumerated in the household and her name given as Clara rather than Carrie, and she’s given as widowed, when she was not. Carrie is thus enumerated twice in this census for she is observed living with her husband (see below). Carrie’s parents were however born in NC and MD. A Belle and G. W. did name a daughter Mable Clair. Is it possible that Carrie was also named Clara?

Enumeration was on the 11th day of May.
In the 1900 census, Carrie had given herself as b. Indiana and her father in Indiana and her mother in Maryland. They had stated they’d been married 52 years (sic. give the same number of years married in the 1910 census). But in the 1880 census she is given as born in Indiana and her parents in KY, so there is a return to that version again in 1910.

James Sparks and Mary Ann Ellis

Original

Touched up.

Image of Mary Sparks courtesy of descendants of Mabel Clair McKenney Tripp.

James Sparks was born 1803 in , Fleming, Kentucky. He married abt 1827 to Mary Ann Ellis in , Nicholas, Kentucky. She was born 1806 in , Nicholas, Kentucky.

I believe James to be the son of George Sparks and Elizabeth “Betsy” Wells. Mary Ann Ellis was the daughter of James Mason Ellis and Francis Fanny Doughty.

Kentucky Nicholas County Marriage Bonds 1799-1855 gives:

James SPARKS & Polly ELLIS, November 1, 1827. By John Rogers.

As Mary Ann ELLIS was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky, I believe this Polly ELLIS to be Mary Ann and wife of James Sparks. In the census, James SPARKS and Mary are consistently located beside family of Mary Ann ELLIS, most consistently James Nicholas ELLIS, her brother.

James and Mary Ann had 7 children:

  1. Elizabeth J. Sparks b. abt. 1828, died before 1853, married Richard Allen Crane who was born 1826 and died 1878.
  2. James E. Sparks b. 1832 in Indiana, died 1927 in , Chautauqua County, Kansas, married 1852 March 28 in , Martin, Indiana to Carrie E. (Cary Ann) Burch b. 1835 in , Greene, Indiana, died 1917 in , Chautauqua, Kansas. Direct line.
  3. George T. Sparks b. abt. 1830, died before 1864. 1851 Jan 12 at Greene, Indiana he married Cyrene C. (Syreney) Vest. In 1864 March 31 at Loogootee, Martin, Indiana she married 2nd Martin J. Stuckey, b. abt 1798 in Kentucky. He was married 3 times previously, to Millie Cleveland, Ruth Love and Catherine Van Hoy.
  4. Otho Sparks was born abt 1834 and died before 1898. 1856 April 13 in , Martin, Indiana he married Mary E. Lamar. He married 2nd, 1895 Nov 17 in , Gibson, Indiana, Sarah C. Collins.
  5. William Sparks was born about 1837.
  6. Benjamin D. Sparks was b. abt. 1840 in , Monroe, Indiana, and died in Chautauqua County, Kansas. He appears to have married 3 times, to a Mary Curtis, Minerva Edmondson, and Emma Louis Mitchell. I’ll list his families on a separate page.
  7. Mary Ellen Sparks was born abt. 1845. 1867 April 4 in Macoupin, Macoupin, Illinois she married T. C. Russell.

I’ve yet to locate the family in the 1830 census.

1830, 1832, 1834, children were born in Indiana. About 1835 James’ father died. hen in 1837 and 1840 two more children were born in Indiana.

The census data for 1840.

James M. ELLIS, father of Mary Ann, is on page 58, and his sons Benjamin and Ellis, and SCOTT and CRANE relations, are on page 67. The household of James SPARKS shows 2 2 1 – – 1 / – – 1 – – 1 (2 males under 5 would be William and Benjamin, 2 5 to 10 would be Otho and James, 1 10 to 15 George, 1 30 to 40 woulld be James Sr., 1 female 10 to 14 is unknown and 1 female 30 to 40 is Mary).

Lastly, in 1845, Mary Ellen was born.

By 1848 the family was in Brown County Indiana where James is listed as a poll tax payer.

The 1850 census data.

James SPARKS and Mary are living beside her brother James Nicholas ELLIS. John ELLIS in household 140 is a brother of her father James Mason ELLIS. John ELLIS married a Lucretia WELLS who could possibly have been a relation of Elizabeth WELLS, wife of George SPARKS.

The brother of Mary Ann ELLIS, James Nicholas ELLIS, also migrated to Chautauqua Co. KS and is observed in the 1880 Sedan census threre, in which Benjamin SPARKS is also observed.

Francis PARTCH has written that her ancestor Samuel McCORMICK boated with the SPARKS down from IN. It is possible the SPARKS families returned to IN.

The SPARKS families connect with the LOVE and STUCKEY families, observed in the census, through George T. SPARKS, son of James SPARKS and Mary Ann ELLIS. George married Cyrene VEST in 1851. Cyrene VEST marries 2nd Martin STUCKEY in 1864. He was married to Ruth LOVE, daughter of James LOVE and Sabra, before 1820 in Indiana.

Brother of James Mason ELLIS, John ELLIS, had a ggrandson, Christian ELLIS, who married Lorena RICH 1898 in Indiana, Martin County. Her mother was a Sharum, daughter of George Sharum and Rachel Standley, and Rachel Standley’s mother as Jane LOVE who married William STANDLEY. Jane was a sister of Ruth who married Martin STUCKEY.

George Sparks and Elizabeth Betsy Wells

The Sparks Family Tree Website gives this on George Sparks:

SQ, p. 1319:

GEORGE SPARKS OF LEWIS AND NICHOLAS COUNTIES, KENTUCKY

“George Sparks was born about 1767 and died prior to 1840, probably in Nicholas County, Kentucky. He was probably the George Sparks who married Rachel McClenahan in Nicholas County, Kentucky, on April 18, 1805. (This may have been his second marriage since a George Sparks married Elizabeth Wells on June 14, 1790, in Bourbon County.) It is quite possible that his widow was the female aged between 70 and 80 who was enumerated among the family of George Sparks on the 1840 census of Nicholas County; this latter George Sparks is believed to have been a son of George and Rachel (McClenahan) Sparks.

“George Sparks paid taxes from 1787 to 1799 in Bourbon County, but apparently was in that portion of Bourbon County which became Fleming County in 1798 because he paid taxes in Fleming County from 1802 to1804. He was in Lewis County from 1809 to 1817, but went to Nicholas County where he lived until is death prior to 1840.

“George Sparks was an Ensign and then a Lieutenant in the Fleming County Regiments (Cornstalk Militia), first in the 30th Regiment and then in the 58th Regiment in 1803-4.” (Article here lists 10 children by sex and approximate birth-dates, no names.

“Some descendants believe that they can identify four of the ten children of George Sparks as George Sparks, Jr.; John Thornton Sparks; Cyntha Ann Sparks; and William Sparks. More positive proof is needed to make this claim a certainty; however, in the hope that the publishing of these records will stimulate the uncovering of additional data, we are giving the records of these four persons as probable children of George and Rachel (McClenahan) Sparks.” (here follows information on the four children named for which see their family sheets.)

SQ, p. 5128: “George Sparks, born ca. 1764, died ca. 1835. He was married (1st) to Elizabeth (Betsey) Wells, and (2nd) to Rachael McClanahan in 1805. Information regarding him and his family can be found in the QUARTERLY of June 1970, Whole No. 70, p. 1319; and December1970, While No. 72, p. 1370.”

I’ve no proof of it, but it’s my belief that James Sparks b, 1803 in Kentucky is the James who was a son of George Sparks and Elizabeth “Betsy” Wells. The following will be difficult to follow for individuals not somewhat familiar with the families in question, but let’s see how it goes…

James SPARKS and Mary ELLIS named a second son George and a third son Otho and the fourth son William, so these names fit. family-wise. Especially interesting is the use of the name Otho by both James and Mary Ellis and George and Elizabeth “Betsy” Wells.

John Wesley BIRCH, brother of Carrie BIRCH/BURCH (married James SPARKS) married an Elizabeth LENTZ b. 1838 in IN, Greene Co. LENTZ name is also seen in this family with John Thornton SPARKS, son of George and Rachel McCLENAHAN, marrying an Elizabeth LAUNTZ b. 1805. A nephew of John Thornton Sparks’ remembered an aunt marrying a SCOTT. James Nicholas ELLIS and Susanna ELLIS, siblings of Mary ELLIS (married James SPARKS) married SCOTTS.

The children of George and Elizabeth are said to be:

  1. Charles Sparks b. 1791 in Kentucky
  2. James Sparks b. about 1800
  3. Otho Sparks b. abt. 1800
  4. Ellen “Nellie” Sparks b. 1804

The children of George and Rachel are said to be:

  1. Mary Sparks b. abt. 1807
  2. John Thornton Sparks b. abt. 1809, died 1849 in Lewis County, Kentucky, married Elizabeth Launtz b. abt 1805 in Maryland, died after 1879.
  3. George Sparks b. abt. 1811 married 1st Catherine Stokes then Hanna Fishback.
  4. William Sparks b. 1812, married 1834 March 23 in Lewis County, Kentucky to Sianna Gilbert b. 1817 in Kentucky, died 1905 in Douglas County, Missouri
  5. Cytha Ann Sparks b. abt. 1814 in Fleming County, Kentucky, married Jesse Nash, son of James Nash and Mary Brackney.

The SPARKS Quarterly gives George as being in Lewis County, Kentucky in 1810 and there is one George Sparks in that census. The George in this census has only 1 male child and 2 female children and George SPARKS is believed to have had 3 male children by Betsy WELLS between abt. 1791 and 1803, and one female child. b. 1804. James’ mother Betsy had however died by 1810 and George remarried to Rachel MCCLENAHAN. They had 1 female child and 1 male child, both under 10, by now. As this is the only George SPARKS in the Lewis Co. census, it would seem James and his two brothers might have been living with another family after the death of their mother. Ellie, James’ sister would fit in the age category of the 10 to 15 year old female in the household. James’ oldest brother, Charles, would have been about 19 and they were possibly in a household of their own.

In the 1820 Nicholas Co. KY census George SPARKS is living 4 doors from a James McCLANAHAN who is living beside a James ELLIS who would be the father of James Mason ELLIS.

Thomas DOUGHTY, father of Francis Doughty, wife of James Mason ELLIS, is seen on the following page.

Interesting to note that John ELLIS, brother of James Mason ELLIS, married a Lucretia WELLS, and that George SPARKS married an Elizabeth WELLS.

There is also a Caleb SPARKS in the census. He has 2 males to 10, 2 10 to 16, 1 26 to 45, 3 females to 10, 1 26 to 45 and 3 males in agriculture.

The NASH name appears both in this family and the family of Caleb SPARKS (son of William, son of William SPARKS and Martha MOORE), his daughter Catherine marrying Eli Harrison NASH, who is a brother of Jesse NASH, who married Cytha Ann, daughter of George and Elizabeth. The ELLIS name also appears in that family. Joseph SPARKS, son of Caleb SPARKS, married Isabella ELLIS. I don’t know who she is but there is likely to be found a relationship eventually.

In the George Sparks household there are 2 males to 10 (William and ?), 2 males 10 to 16 (John and Charles?), 1 45 and up (George). Then 1 female 0 to 10 (Cynthia), 1 16 to 26 (Mary) and 1 26 to 45 (Rachel).

Jesse ENLOW is observed in the census, whose line married into the HACKNEY-CROCKETT side of the family.

NOTE: Profile of children doesn’t fit James Mason Ellis. But it seems there would be some relation as Thomas DOUGHTY is living the next page over by a PEYTON.

By 1827 James Sparks has married Mary Ann Ellis and, according to the census of children’s birth places, is in Indiana soon thereafter.

A possible is found for George Sparks in 1830 Nicholas County, Kentucky, though the household doesn’t fit with several young females present.

In the 1850 Martin Co. Perry Township IN census. Elizabeth CRANE is living nearby James and Mary SPARKS. Her husband, Richard, is given as living in the household of his son, Richard A. CRANE, next door, but this is probably a transcription error in the census. Children living with Elizabeth were John C., Thomas, Isaac E., Elizabeth, Benjamin J., Susan R., (all of these previous children of Richard and Rebecca), Charles H., Elisa E., Cary A. BIRCH (given as 2 which is an error), John A. BIRCH, Isaac T. BURCH and Martha S. BIRCH. A child of Richard and Rebecca’s who isn’t in the household is Sarah Crane, who would have been about 14. Carrie Burch is erroneously given as 2 when she would have been 15, but her siblings ages are all about right.
