“Henry SHOCK of Germany, emigrated to America and settled first in Pennsylvania, from whence he removed to Greenbriar Co. VA. His children were–Henry, John, Jacob, Rayner, Christina and Sally. John married Polly SHILLEY, and they had–Milley, David, Henry, Hector P. L., Eliza, Polly, William, Rebecca, Peggy and Sarah. Mr. Shock settled in Boone Co., MO in 1906, and built a horse-mill. His son Henry was married fist to Mary JACKSON, and second to Hannah L. COX, and by his two wives he had sixteen children. He settled in Audrain County in 1831, and bought out Richard WILLINGHAM, “stock, lock and barrel” for $80. He afterward purchased the property of Colonel Robert FULKERSON, whose land adjoined his, and the latter removed to Montgomery County. Mr. Shock is called the “fat man” of Audrain County and we give his portrait on page 228. David Shock married Cynthia GIBSON of Boone County. Hector P. L. married Sarah A. JACKSON, and settled in Bates County, where he died. Eliza married Thomas STRICKLAND, the first stage contractor on the Booneslick Road. Polly married William BREWER. William married the widow EVANS. Henry Shock (1740-1818) and Sarah Elizabeth Holtzapfel (1751-1818)

Henry SHOCK was born abt. 1740-42 in Germany and, according to “Pioneer Families of Missouri”, emigrated to Pennsylvania then Greenbriar County, Virginia.

Henry died at about the age of 78, 7 Feb 1818, at Twistville, Braxton County, West Virgnia (formed in 1836 from Kanawha, Lewis, Nicholas and Randolph Counties, and was called Nicholas County at the time) or Greenbriar Co. WV.

Henry married Sarah Elizabeth HOLTZAPFEL, daughter of Erasmus Holtzapfel and Christina Ruscher, in 1768 at York, PA when she was about 17 and he was about 28 or 30. Sarah was born 5 Apri 1751 at York PA and died after 1818 in West Virginia.

They had 7 children born between 1769 and 1800, which means their last child, Regina, was born when Sarah was about 49. The first four are given as born in Virginia, up to 1789. Beginning with Sally in 1795 the children are given as born in West Virginia.

1) Henry b. 1769 m. Mary “Polly” KIRKPATRICK
2) John b. 1771 at Shanandoah, Page Co. VA m. Mary “Polly” SHEELY at Fayette Co. KY. After her death he married Mary Bealor.

6) Christine b. 1797 at Greenbriar Co. WV m. 1813 to Andrew BOGGS.
7) Regina b. 1800 at Greenbriar Co. WV m. John GREENE.

A Henry SHOCK appears in a 1783 VA Early Census Census Index in Shenandoah Co. pg 65, tax list.

A Henry SHOCK appears in the 1790 Federal Census in Philadelphia Co. PA, Township Oxford, Roll, M637_9 and again in the 1800 Federal Census in Philadelphia Co. PA, unknown township, page 367. But our Henry SHOCK was already in Greenbriar WV at that time.

WILLIAM GEORGE JACK, M. D. Though born and reared on a farm and spending most of his early years in the vicinity of Chautauqua, William G. Jack had an early ambition for a professional career and gratified it after a thorough course in colleges and clinics and for the past fifteen years has successfully practiced as a physician and surgeon at Chautauqua. He is regarded as one of the best informed physicians and most skillful surgeons in this section of the state.

A resident of Chautauqua County since he was nine years of age, William George Jack was born in Des Moines, Iowa, July 24, 1874. His father A. J. Jack was born in Scotland in 1831, and in 1833 was brought to America by his parents who settled near Coshocton, Ohio. In that Ohio community he grew up and married, and becoming a carpenter and builder followed that trade in both Ohio and Iowa. In 1883 he came to Kansas and was one of the earliest contractors and builders in the Town of Chautauqua. For a number of years he also conducted a lumber yard and hardware business in that town, but giving up his commercial activities he retired in 1903 to his farm a mile northwest of Chautauqua, where he now lives. He is eighty-five years of age and has had a long and useful career. During the Civil war he served as a member of the Iowa State Guards. He is a republican, having become affiliated with that party when it was first organized. His church is the Presbyterian. The maiden name of his wife was Julia A. Young, and she was born in Ohio in 1848 and is now seventy-three years of age. Their children were: Dora M., who died at El Reno, Oklahoma, at the age of forty-five and was at that time president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union of Oklahoma; she married C. A. Cleveland, who was a merchant at Anadarko, Oklahoma. Sadie B. is the wife of J. M. Chittenden, and they reside on their farm on Coon Creek 2 1/2 miles west of Chautauqua. Belle is an invalid and lives with her parents. A. J. Jack, Jr., is a farmer a half mile north of Chautauqua.

Doctor Jack, the youngest of his parents’ children, attended the public schools of Chautauqua, and gained the equivalent of a modern high school education. At the age of nineteen he left school and for a time was employed in his father’s lumber business. He studied medicine in the Kansas City Medical College at Kansas City, Missouri, and was graduated from there with the class of 1900 and the degree M. D. He has since taken much post graduate work in the clinics and hospitals of Kansas City, at the hospitals in Chicago, at the Chicago Policlinic and has also attended the Surgical Congress in Chicago.

In 1899, the year before his graduation, he was licensed to practice and opened his office in Chautauqua, where he has since centered his practice with the exception of one year spent at Sedan. His offices are on Main Street, and he owns the building in which his office is located, and he also has a comfortable residence in the west central part of town.

Doctor Jack served one year as health officer of Chautauqua County, as coroner four years, and is now a member of the school board. He is a live and energetic citizen and has always made the best interests of the town his own. He is a member of the County and State Medical societies, the Medical Association of the Southwest and the American Medical Association. Politically he is a republican. Doctor Jack takes much interest in Masonry, being affiliated with Vesper Lodge No. 136 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons at Sedan, with Wichita Consistory No. 2 of the Scottish Rite, and with Midian Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Wichita. Among other interests he is a member of the Chautauqua State Bank.

On November 5, 1906, at Kansas City, Missouri, Doctor Jack married Miss Ermie L. Lemmon, daughter of W. F. and Mattie (Crockett) Lemmon, who are now living near Peru, Kansas. Her father is an oil producer. Doctor and Mrs. Jack have two children: George, born August 31, 1908; and Pauline, born March 5, 1910.

Ermie L. LEMMON, daughter of William Fillard LEMMON and Martha Eliza “Mattie” CROCKETT was born 19 Jan 1880 and died 14 Dec 1922 at about the age of 41. She is buried at El Cado Cemetery in Chautauqua Co. KS.

Ermie married Dr. William George JACK, son of Armour J. JACK and Julia A. YOUNG. Armour J. JACK was born 25 Jan 1832 in Scotland, and died at Chautauqua. He is buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Julia A. YOUNG was born 30 March 1834 in Ohio and died 5 Feb 1918, at about the age of 94, in Chautauqua. She is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua. Armour and Julia JACK had 5 children: Dr. WIlliam George JACK; Dora M. JACK married C. A. CLEVELAND; Sadie B. JACK b. 16 Aug 1861, died 22 Jan 1933, buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, married John M. CHITTENDEN b. 24 July 1858, died 2 May 1934, buried at Oak Hill Cemetery; Belle A. JACK b. 1866, died 1928, is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, she was an invalid who lived with her parents; and A. J. JACK Jr.

Dr. William George JACK was born 24 July 1874 in Des Moines, IA. He died 20 Dec. 1946 at about the age of 72 and is buried at El Cado Cemetery in Chautauqua Co. KS.

Michael Strickland Family

Michael Kelly STRICKLIN, son of Thomas Strickland and Elizabeth Shock, was born 23 Dec 1842 in Boone Co. MO., the 13th of 14 children. He was a sibling of Millie Ann Strickland, of this blog’s direct line.

He married (1) Mercy Jane Arnold about 1869, then married (2) Gormelia Elizabeth FAIRCHLD b. 1856 IA on Jan 1. 1874 in Alta, Harvey Co. KS. He was about 32 and she was about 18. That year they had Leonidas STRICKLIN. They appear to have been in Chautauqua Co. KS by the year 1879, when Thomas Elmer STRICKLAND, their 4rh child, was born (if not before then).

My Great Grandfather Michael Stricklin bought Cherokee strip land, Chautauqua
County Kansas 1881 and lived there until his death 1917. Howard county was
split 1875 to form Chautauqua and Elk counties. My Handy Book for Genealogists said that Elk County Courthouse burned 1906 and all records were destroyed.

Source: Judy Berndt, great-granddaughter

Michael served with the Union during the Civil War, his wife filing for his pension in 1911 and 1918.

Date of filing 1911 May 3, class-invalid, application 422.023, certificate-314.795 State filed-KS
Date of filing:1918 July 16? class-widow, 1123.932 certificate-874.552 State filed-KS.

Michael and Gormelia had 11 children: Leonidas, Arthur K., James Oscar, Thomas Elmer, Eva May, Anna Elizabeth, William Herbert, Almon D., Michael Richard, Guy and Mary Ethil.

Eva May, who married William Reed Alexander, gave herself as being proud of her Cherokee ancestry. So, there are rumors of Cherokee ancestry down this line, thought to have come down through the Stricklands, but we’ve found no proof of such yet.

The following Stricklands are buried at the Elcado Cemetery in Chautauqua Co., KS:

STRICKLIN, Michael K. 1842 1918 Civil War Vet
STRICKLIN, Gormelia 1854 1930

James Daniel Brewer (1849 – 1916)

James Daniel Brewer was a son of Daniel Levi Brewer and Catherine Hedden. Settling in Chautauqua County, Kansas, he was a sibling of direct line.

General Notes

James Daniel, b. 13 April 1849, KY to 18 July 1916, Niotaze, KS. He married, on 16 Sept. 1867, at Catholic Mission, Neosho, Kansas, Amanda ULHMAN (also given as Maude Mary OULMAN). He married (2), on 26 April 1887, Sedan KS, Anna Dora LIAFE.

“James Daniel served in Union Army during Civil War. Worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a carpenter and helped build the first depot at Kansas City, Kansas, as well as the one at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He met a girl named “A Maude Mary An Oulman” living in Missouri. She was an orphan living with relatives. The family did not want her to marry James so she was placed in a Catholic convent somewhere in Missouri. She was unhappy there, and James stole her away and they went to Kansas City to be married.

“They later moved to Niotaze, Kansas and purchased 80 acres. They also had a general store there. He took a partner who ran the store while he continued to do carpenter work for the railroad. Built the depots at Sedan and Caney, Kansas. His partner absconded with $10,000 leaving James holding the bag of debts.

“In 1884 he married Anna Dora who was 19 years younger than he. They moved into OK Territory and he built depots at Shawnee and Meeker, OK. When the land was opened for settlement he drove a buggy with his son, Daniel, and a friend, Charlie Brown, into Lincoln County and homesteaded.”

Doc: Book written by Norma L. Roberts 1976 (Source: Nancy Benton’s Brewer Genealogy)

Amanda UHLMAN and James were not married in Kansas City. Ed Henderson located their marriage license and they were married in Catholic Mission, Neosho County, Kansas. The fact they were married at Catholic Mission raises some questions as to whether Amanda was sent to a “Catholic Mission” or if there is confusion as she was married at Catholic Mission.

Catholic Mission was a town. There was a Catholic Mission in Neosho but it was dedicated to Indian students (primarily Osage) until 1870.

William G. Cutler’s “History of the State of Kansas” relates the following on Osage Mission, mentioning Catholic Mission:

Previous to the organization of a town company or the laying out of a town site two buildings had been erected here, one by L. P. Foster & Co., a log one, in which a store was opened and managed by the “Morgan boys,” and a framebuilding erected by S. A. Williams, of Fort Scott, in which his son, Augustus D. Williams, kept a store. The movements were made in 1866, in anticipation of the starting of a town. A Town Company was organized consisting of George A. Crawford, S. A. Williams, C. W. Blair, Benjamin McDonald and John Nandier, a town site laid out and called Osage Mission., in December, 1867. By the side of it and to the west another town site was laid out and called Catholic Mission. On this town site a small store was opened by S. J. Gilmore, in a log building known then and still remembered as “Castle Thunder;” this store was opened in 1865. On Osage Mission townsite the Town Company erected a building on the corner of County and Market streets into which A. D. Williams moved his stock of goods in 1867, in which he kept the postoffice, with C. H. Howard as deputy. About the same time L. P. Foster & Co., erected a two story frame building across the street and a little north of the present site of the Southern Hotel. Joseph Roycroft built a log saloon near where now stands the City Bank; Middaugh and Dohnan came down from Topeka, and built a store where L. Steadman’s store now stands, in 1867; James Roycroft erected a boarding house, the first in town, on the southeast corner of County and Market Streets, and during the summer John Nandier built the first hotel, the Neosho House, a large two story frame, long known as the finest hotel building in Southern Kansas. Not long after this Nathaniel Tucker started a store near “Castle Thunder,” in the building now occupied as a dwelling by Daniel Zehner, and about the same time, perhaps a short time previously, Dr. J. B. Lamb started a store also in Catholic Mission. Marston & Ulmer, from Iowa, opened a furniture store in 1868. J. M. Boyle, from Fort Scott, opened a hardware store just north of L. P. Foster & Co.’s store, and on the southwest corner of County and Main streets, Ryan & Roycroft started a general store about the same time.

The first lawyer in the town was C. F. Hutchings, in 1867, the first physician, Dr. A. F. Neely, about the same time, and the first Protestant minister was Rev. A. Hitchcock. The first birth was that of a son to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Noble, 1868. From the first the growth of the town was vigorous and rapid. In August, 1868, it contained eight dry goods stores, three drug stores, one hardware store, two boot and shoe stores, four blacksmith shops, and numerous other business establishments, and a population of nearly nine hundred. From this time until the building of the railroad the growth of the town was steady. It was the center of three lines of stages; one to Fort Scott, one to Humboldt and the other to Chetopa. When these stages arrived all was life and animation. Each stage was a Concord coach drawn by four fine large horses, and the driver’s voice and importance, and the crack of his whip served to raise the excitement to the highest pitch, and is still vividly remembered. A more complete history of the town will be seen in the sketches of its individual industries and institutions…

…The first school in Osage Mission was the Mission School, begun by Father Schoenmakers in 1847. This, however, was an institution devoted to the education of Indians and in the interests of the Catholic Church.

1. Birth: 1849 Apr 13 , Putnam, Indiana. 1
If James Daniel was born in KY in 1849, as he is given as being in Nancy Benton’s database, it was not long before the move to Indiana, as his family is in the 1850 Putnam Co. Indiana census.

The 1850 census has him born in Indiana and in the 1880 census he gives himself as born in Indiana, so I am placing him as born probably in Putnam Co. Indiana.
