Even the littlest scrap of paper can provide information on a life. The above debt helps us place James Allen Noyes in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1849.
Battle Creek Dec 14th 1849
For value received I promised to pay to James A Noyes (illegible) the sum of twenty three dollars and sixty cents on or before the first of June 1850 with use
Samuel Dickinson
Why would this scrap of paper be saved, however?
The 1850 census shows:
1850 Battle Creek Calhoun Michigan
124/124 David Waters 44 farmer NY
Mary 44
Gilbert 10 MI
Mary O. 7
Martha DICKINSON 21 NY
Samuel DICKINSON 25 Mason
Roswell Dickinson 1 MI
James A. DRAKE 22 Bookeeper NY
Betsey DRAKE 20
It may be that David Waters was a brother of Susan Waters, James Noyes’ second wife. I’ve attempted finding the family of David Waters, and the one of Samuel Dickinson, at Rootsweb and Ancestry.com. No one has claimed them.
