The Henderson Pioneers to Kansas

Our journey begins near the mid 1840’s in Beaufort County, North Carolina when
on August 28, 1844, Atwill Henderson was given birth by his mother, Mary
Foreman Henderson. Still yet, another birth on May 26, 1846 to their second
son, Russell Henderson would play a key part in the Henderson’s family
history.

By now, you might be asking what about their parents? Mr. Henderson whose first
name has long been passed down as also being Atwill Henderson married Mary
Foreman between 1840 and 1843. When he was born, it can only be estimated to
have been about 1816. Mary however, was born according to her tomb stone on
September 11, 1817, place unknown. Nothing is really known at present, about
either ones past or their ancestry. At best, records have been few with only
verbal records past down through the generations and what remains in Atwill and
Rachel’s family Bible.

Earlier it was mentioned that the birth of Russell Henderson would play a key
roll in the Henderson history. In the year of 1846, the United States went to
war with Mexico. It was during this time Mr. Henderson left his family to serve
the United States in this war. It is not clear if he even knew Russell had been
born.

After the Mexican War (1846-1848) their father having not returned and
reported, “Lost at Sea” in the Gulf of Mexico, Mary left North Carolina with
her two boys, Atwill and Russell Henderson about 1849. It is thought her
sister, aunts and grand mother traveled with them to Indiana. They lived in
Indiana about 14 years. There the boys met the sisters who would become their
wives.

In Indiana, Rachel Jane Brewer was born on October 6, 1852 then her sister
Matilda C. Brewer in 1856 to Daniel Brewer and his wife Catherine Hedden.

At some point both families moved to Illinois where on August 21, 1866, Atwill
Henderson and Rachel Jane Brewer were married. Shortly there after In 1867 by
means of covered wagon and walking the Henderson’s and some Brewers, grandmas
and all, moved to Missouri for a time then on to Neosho County, Kansas near
Erie. On November 16, 1868, Rachel gave birth to their first child, and only
daughter they named, Mary Catherine Henderson, after the grandmothers. On
February 1, 1871, Rachel gave birth to their second child, a son and first of
nine boys, Jesse Alexander Henderson while still in Neosho County.

Russell Henderson and Matilda C. Henderson married near Erie, Kansas on
February 19, 1869. In December, 1869, Matilda gave birth to their first child,
a son they named Warren Henderson.

Mary, Atwill and Russell Henderson are listed on the 1870 Federal Census in
Neosho County, Kansas.

After exploring the southeast portion of Kansas and the northeast portions of
Oklahoma, the decision was made to move to what was then known as Howard
county. Most of the Brewer family decided to move on to Oklahoma, a few moved
to Missouri. On September 26, 1874, Rachel gave birth to the first of four boys
born near Monett, Jasper Franklin Henderson.

On March 29, 1872, Russell Henderson applied for a land patent from the United
States in the Southeast Quarter Section 28, Township 33 (Washington), Range 12,
near Monett, Kansas. It is believed this may have been a land grant or pension
Mary received for her husbands loss in the Mexican War. On August 17, 1872,
Atwill and Rachel Henderson purchased land from Ruben and Martha A. Perry for
the amount of $250 adjacent to the land Russell had applied for. In November,
1872, Matilda gave birth to their second child, Sarah Jane Henderson.

On July 11, 1874 tragedy struck, Russell’s wife Matilda died and was buried at
Mount Vernon Cemetery, a few miles north of home.

Here they raised cattle, lived out of the wagons and out of an old stone house,
the crumbled remains of which still rest to this day between some oil jacks.
The stone house was only about 8 foot by 10 foot. In the rainy season the creek
that divided Russell’s land and Atwill’s would flow out of it’s banks, the
lands being low would be engulfed and the small house would flood. The search
for better land to build upon, once again began. But that is another story.

“So, the story goes. The ages are within the time the Family portrate was
taken. John Chester died a few days later on March 11, 1896 and was
burried near his grandmother Mary Henderson. This may be why an X is
marked by his name.”

27. Atwell Henderson Obituary #1, The Sedan Lance 1898 Aug , Chautauqua,
Kansas. (10)

Atwell Henderson

“Atwell Henderson was born in North Carolina, August 28, 1844, and died
at his home near Niotaze, Kansas, July 28, 1898. He lacked only one
month of being 54 years of age.

“He left North Carolina at the age of five years, in company with mother,
sisters, brothers, grandmother and aunts, for Indiana. He remained in
Indiana fourteen years, and went to Illinois and lived there two years
then came to Kansas–to Neosho Co–in 1866. In 1871 came to Chautauqua
Co–thus being a resident of this county for twenty-seven years.

“His father was killed in the Mexican war when Atwell was three years of
age. His mother lived with him until her death seven years ago. He had
one son who preceded him to eternity. He leaves a wife, eight sons, one
daughter, a brother and sister.

“They were rare elements in Atwell Henderson. He had that simplicity
that marked the child, such as would characterize that class of which
Jesus said ‘except one becomes as a child he cannot enter the Kingdom of
Heaven.’ He always found something good to say of the people about him.
He was a member of the M. E. church, having joined while in Neosho Co.,
about thirty-two years ago.

“He was interred in the cemetery southeast of Niotaze, on July 30, 1898,
under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of Sedan of which he was a
member. The Woodmen of Niotaze of which he was also a member were also
in attendance. The funeral discourse was given at the home by Rev. B. M.
Powell of this city.”

THE VISIT

“Last July during the 2000 Henderson Family Reunion, I was able to talk
with my Aunt Mable HENDERSON Atkinson who was in from Salt Lake City, UT.
She told me a story that she had heard from aunts and uncles while
growing up, that happened to Rachel Jane. It goes like this… One day
during the summer, two Indian women came by the old home place. Each was
carrying a baby in their packs. It was not unusual for indians on their
treck south to come by as there was an old indian trail near by. The
women came to the house where the door was open and stood outside. Rachel
saw them and came to the door, she offered to feed them because they
looked hungry. The two women instantly laid their babies just outside and
came in and ate. When they had finnished eating they made gestures of
thanks and went outside. Rachel followed them. When they picked up the
babies, one had died. It had apperently been very sick. The women went on
their way without a word.”

    Hello,
I am helping my cousin, Gail, Barnhart Dickerson, research her father’s line. He has passed away, and was A.E. “June” Barnhart Jr, son of Atwill Emanuel Barnhart Sr. and Mary Cathryn Henderson. Her parents were Atwill Henderson and Rachel Jane Brewer. I have a subscription to ancestry.com and the latest in computer products, but my cousin Gail doesn’t at this point. Our mothers were sisters, so I am not related to this line, but am doing this work for her so that she can pick up the trail when she retires next year. (And she has a sister as well as grandchildren who will be interested in all of this.) Gail lives in Amarillo, and may be able to soon travel to southern Kansas to see gravesites and meet distant cousins. She knows a little from what has been researched by others in the past but I am trying to use current advances to give her more comprehensive material to go off of so she can follow her family history more accurately. Would she be able to meet with any of you next year? Are there any things she could see besides grave sites? I will pass along this site to her & I think she and her family will be thrilled with all that has been done! Also, I have researched on my own and have a little more data than what is shown here, probably thanks to continued advances in gathering data in the past 2 years. I would be happy to share.
    Thanks for your work,

Phyllis, I don’t live in the area and I personally don’t know of anything besides grave sites. There’s a guy named Ed Henderson who is a descendant of Atwill and Rachel and he lives in the area. Would you like me to pass your email on to him so he can get in touch with you?
