Letter from Sarah Atwell Gilbert to Caroline Atwell Noyes, 1877

Sarah Ann Lydia Atwell Gilbert was Caroline Atwell Noyes’ sister.

Mention is made of a number of people in the letter. Viola, who had been apparently ill, was Caroline’s daughter and would have been about sixteen.

Sarah’s husband, to the best of my knowledge, was a dentist.

Uncle Best was Thomas Best Scagel b. 1805 in Vermont. His wife was Chloe Fisk Dillingham who died August 11 1876 in Vermont. Emery was their son, born in 1835 and died December 27 1872 at Hoosick Falls, New York. In the 1870 census Emery Scagel, a manufacturer of clap board, is living with his parents, Thomas and Chloe, their daughter Mary E., 16, and Dora, 6, and Flora, 4. Dora and Flora were children of Emery and Eliza Betsey Henry who had died March 11 1866. So Sarah is bringing up here the deaths of Mary and Emery and how they were difficult on Chloe who had died the previous summer.

Lorenzo R. is possibly Lorenzo Randolph Bryan, b. 1832 in Waterbury, Vermont to Orson Patrick Bryan and Sarah Sally Scagel, an aunt to Caroline and Sarah, sister of their long deceased mother and Thomas Best Scagel. Sarah Scagel, Lorenzo’s mother, had died Jan 7 1873 in Waterbury and Sarah Gilbert appears to not remember whether she was living or not, which I find peculiar with so close a relative. But Lorenzo Randolph Bryan is my best guess.

I’ve decided Marge/Mary Carlton is Marge (Margaret) Fisk, sister of Lorenzo, who I believe married a Major Alfred Lanthrop Carlton. He had died in Montpelier on May 29 1874.

Who Katie and Carrie are I’ve not been able to determine. I’ve checked for names like this in the Randolph, Orange County census and am finding nothing.

Clark who moved to Burlington Kansas? His last name appears to begin with a B. I’m unable to id him or his family.

LETTER FROM SARAH GILBERT TO CARRIE NOYES

Before Jan 3 1877

417 Showmont (?) Ave.

My dear Sister

It has been a long time since I have written you still I have not forgotten you I think of you every day and wonder when I am to see you again I hope you & Viola are back to health and the rest of the family well – I am much better than in the summer. West is not very well – his partner was sick for near three months this summer & it was very hard for him. He is talking of selling out again although no one knows it here and if he does he will take a long rest perhaps go out west – if he was not so miserable I should feel terribly about it – he has done very well since he went back into the office and

if I could feel sure that he was going to be able to work for two years to come I should feel terribly but I don’t want him to work on the confined (?) when he is not able to be we are fated to be unsettled all the time if he does go out of business I shall try to get out of the store by the way how many (unintelligible) has been & is there a chance for another some time when you are in town wish you would work out the (unintelligible) but some good responsible person that would know what the chances would be there for the spring trade – I can’t sell to Mrs. Fill (?) because she has not got any thing to buy with and I may be obliged to take the goods somewhere to set them up and perhaps (unintelligible) & then sell out – I can’t tell what I shall do would go to (unintelligible) I could hear of where there was a good chance – there are many things I like about being in a store

but if West is going to be miserable (unintelligible) go to be here – I don’t get home until after he is in bed almost every night – I have had so much (unintelligible) for the last year that I shall like to be relieved of some of it for a while – business is at a stand still here as well as at other places – don’t expect much until the Election is settled you probably hear (have?) more than I do for you are in a democratic district I believe – West went to VT this summer went to (illegible) at Waterbury took dinner with Uncle Best – Aunt Chloe is not there any more she died the last of July with softening of the brain Uncle Best said and that it was too much for her burying Mary and Emory I never have seen her since Mary was buried – the girls were there with him keeping home & going to school West went to the school house to see them said that Dora was

quite slight and stooping but Flora was plump & very pretty. They have a little old house at the Mill Village. West met Lorenzo R. between the center & streets said he had moved and that I should know where he lived if he sold the Baxler-Whitney place but I do not – West did not ask him for his mother so don’t know whether she is living or not & had forgotten (?) he said he had five or six children – Marge (Mary)? Carlton (?) is trying to sell out her store don’t know whether she will succeed or not – she was at Philadelphia and did not see her but a little while he went to Randolph to see Katie & Carrie they have each of them a good place he said Katie was taller than I am. The man their (?) mother married does not do any thing for them and the people that have them took them out of sympathy because they had no where to go

you will remember (..) Clark (…) used to be at Bradford one year ago he sold out of Bradford and went out to Burlington Kansas we did all we could to prevent his going but he went – He thought he had got into the (…) of the world he brought him a horse a small one and after a little he bought (…) house & 20 acres of land right in the heart of the town (…) $1800 for it – then he went in to different kinds of speculations such as hogs & (…) but in Aug. he was taken sick had the fever that is peculiar to that climate – we kept hearing from them by way of his wife that he was getting better then he would be worse until news came that he had got through with this life he leaves a wife & four children its oldest thirteen its youngest little more than one (…) she probably will have about 2000, not any more, and the last we heard from them

she was sick with this fever & two of the children how she is going to get along I don’t know but Clark had never been sick in his life I am so sorry that one of us did not go to them for Clark would have come to us if we had been sick he was a true friend. I remember this (?) ago this fall (?) when West was feeling so badly and was sick that I wrote him and asked him to write him he was (always full of fun) and say something that would encourage him but instead of doing that he took the first train of course and came right here to the store that he might know just how every thing was before he saw West he staied a week and it did West ever so much good he was always read to help but (…) now he is gone I know it must have been so hard for him to give up his family – I think his will will be a poor person to get along for the reason that she can do so few things she is an excellent teacher & that is about all she can do no housekeeper neither can she doe any sewing if (….) for her if West goes out of business he probably will go out there and see if he can help her to dispense of the business then I (…) wish I was at liberty so I could go with him & go and see you – he will stop at your place if I don’t go if he goes either in going or coming – Let us hear from you just how you are & if Viola has got well wish she was a little older I would set her up in business that is if she wanted to but she ought to go to school some longer – my love to them all remember me to your neighbors (…) you think (…) sister

In the elder George’s house, 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male 26

The 2 males 10 to 16 are Lorenzo and Thomas, the 1 male 16 to 26 is
unknown (George living in the next household), the 26 to 45 male is
perhaps George placed in the wrong column except that there is also a 26
to 45 year old female in the household who could be the wife of this male
(there is no male listed 45 and over); the female under 10 is unknown,
the two females 15 to 26 would be Rachel and Sarah, the female 26 to 45

In the younger George’s house, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 female under 10, 1

Olive ATWELL, daughter of Nathaniel ATWELL and Lydia HUNKINS, and sister
of Hiram who married Rachel SCAGEL, married a Clark FISK. It would be

17. Religion: Waterbury Methodist church 1833 Waterbury Center,
Washington, Vermont, USA. (11)
Image of Waterbury Center Methodist (Community) Church
credited The Vermont Chamber of Commerce from the National Park
Service page on the Waterbury Center Methodist Church. That page states
that the church at Waterbury Center, a historical landmark, is of rural
Federal architecture, pervasive throughout the early nineteenth century.

The date 1833 is prominently displayed in a wooden fan adorning the
gable end high above the entrance. In addition to this date mark, the
church offers many other architectural clues confirming that the building
was constructed at the end of the Federal period. Some of the features
that distinguish it as such are the church’s symmetry, low pitched roof,
simple ornamentation, smooth facade, central entry and brick
construction. The pinkish bricks were locally manufactured, likely from a
brickyard near the Mill Village Historic District. The bell, located in
the two-tiered wooden tower, was cast in Troy, New York, in 1836. In
1858, the interior was remodeled, at which time the present pews were
installed and a second floor was built, now the sanctuary. Stained-glass
windows from 1894 decorate each side of the second floor.

The bell, given here as crafted in 1836, conflicts with the story that in
1833 the church bell was rung 100 times for Rachel Lee Scagel’s 100th
birthday. The bell, however, was minted in 1836 and that is the year
Rachel died. Perhaps instead of being rung 100 times for her birthday,
it was rung 103 times at her death. Just a thought.

The church is located on Rt. 100 in the heart of Waterbury Center.

11. Correspondence Reference: 1876 Nov 21. (29) Sarah Atwell Gilbert
seems to refer to Thomas Best SCAGEL, her uncle, in a letter dated 21
Nov (1876)

“West went to VT this summer went to (unintelligible) at Waterbury took
dinner with Uncle Best – Aunt Chloe is not there any more she died the
last of July with softening of the brain Uncle Best said and that it
was too much for her burying Mary and Emory I never have seen her since
Mary was buried – the girls were there with him keeping home & going to
school West went to the school house to see them said that Dora was
quite slight and stooping but Flora was plump & very pretty. They have a
little old house at the Mill Village.”

A problem is that Thomas Best SCAGEL is given online as dying 23 Aug
1871, and here West was visiting with Uncle Best in 1876, discussing
Chloe’s death and the death of Emory (her son) and a Mary, which means
this was undeniably Thomas Best SCAGEL.

COMMENT: 3 males under 10 would be Thomas, Lorenzo and perhaps Francis.
The 2 males 10 to 15 would be George and Hiram. The male 26 to 44 would
be George. The female under 10 would be Rachel. The female 10 to 15
would be perhaps Sarah. The female 25 to 44 would be Sarah. The female
over 45 wouldn’t be Rachel Lee SCAGEL as Jacob died in 1817. Perhaps she
is Sarah’s mother.

================================================================================

I don’t have any information on the publication from which the below is taken.
My source is 3 pages xeroxed from The Bryan Family of Waterbury, VT,
courteously provided by Nancy Benton.

The Scagels

Orson Patrick BRYAN, having married Sally, the daughter of George Scagel, the
descendents of this marriage would also be part of the Scagel family. It has
been a long time since anyone with the Scagel surname had lived in Waterbury.
There are Scagel descendents presently living in Morrisville and Richmond. Of
course, the Bryans and Scagels had close family ties. Two of my father’s
brothers and one sister, who died as infants or young children, are buried in
the George Scagel lot in the old Center cemetery.

George Scagel came to Waterbury in 1794. Lewis’ History of Waterbury says p.
30, “George Scagel took up his residence on a center plot in 1794, and spent
his life there. “This was early in Waterbury’s history as a political entity.
The first settler in the area of Waterbury was a Mr. Marsh, who arrived in
1783. Ezra Butler, who is considered to be the first permanent resident in
what was to become the town of Waterbury, arrived in 1785. Note that Georg
Scagel arrived a scant nine years later. The Bryans, thorough the Scagels, are
one of the oldest families in Waterbury to continually reside or own property
and pay taxes in the town. Book 2, Page 123 of the Waterbury Town records
states that George Scagel purchased from Josiah Smith on January 6, 1797, land
in the Center for which he paid $200. This was “the original right of Joseph
Badgley in the township of Waterbury.” A map of the lots assigned to the
original grantors, shows this to be the lot where the brick house, opposite the
Methodist Church, now stands.

George Scagel apparently was a man of considerable substance. The brick house
was originally a farm house built by George Scagel. Even today, it is the most
imposing structure in the Center. We have noted that the community’s first
church services were held in a barn. When the present brick church was built
opposite the Scagel home, it was built on land donated by George Scagel in
accordance with family tradi-

9

tion. Among my mother’s newspaper clippings is an article written about the
church in 1949. This article states, “Land for this church was leased for the
sum of $10 by George Scagel to Chester Lyon, Thomas B. Scagel, and Ira Hudson,
trustees of the church.” Thomas Best Scagel was a son of George Scagel. He
was later the postmaster at Waterbury Street. Apparently the $10 involved was
a good faith token payment for the land. An interesting story involving the
church is that the church bell was pealed 100 times on the 100th birthday of
Rachel Lee Scagel, the mother of George Scagel. She was born in 1733, and so
this event occurred in 1833, shortly after the completion of the church. On
that same day, at 100 years of age, she took a stroll from her son George’s
house in the Center, to her granddaughter Sally Bryan’s house. This would, of
course, be the house on present Route 100, where my father was born forty years
later.

A resume of the movement of the Scagel family to northern Vermont may be of
interest. Jacob Scagel, fourth and last known child of Christopher and Deborah
(Wallis) Scagel, was born at Rye, New Hampshire, October 25, 1736. An entry in
the marriage register of the Congregational Church of Rye for the year 1755
states: “Jan 21 Jacob Scadgel and Rachel Lee were married.” In a record
published by the Hunkins family, in 1961, it states that George Scagel was born
in Maine on October 8, 1765. In the genealogy chart of the Scagel family, his
birthplace is given as Rye, New Hampshire. In the reminisences (sic) written
by Edith Emma Atkins, it states that George Scagel came to Vermont from Saco,
Maine. George Scagel may have been born in Maine, but authenticated
information shows that the family started moving north from Rye, New
Hampshire.

Over the years, there have developed many variations in the spellling of the
Scagel name. In 1766, Jacob “Schagell” was living in Rye, New Hampshire. In
1769, Jacob “Scagel” was employed in building the road from Middleton to
Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Also, in 1769, Jacob “Sceggel” became a resident of
the latter town. The New Hampshire State Papers report that by 29 January 1770
Jacob “Seageal” had fulfilled the conditions of the deed issued to him in
Wolfeboro. Jacob and Rachel (she who lived to be 103 and died in Waterbury
Center in 1836) lived in Wolfeboro for five years, during which time their last
three children were born. On December 8, 1770, Jacob mortgaged his land for
fifty pounds. Unable to meet the payment on the morgage, the court forced
Jacob out of his home in April, 1775.

The family next moved east to Parsonfield, Maine which area was just opening up
for settlement. In 1785, the family was still in Parsonfield

10

field, for the history of the town states that in that year Jacob “Schagel”
owned a potash works. It is not known when Jacob Scagel left Parsonfield.
Possibly, he turned over the potash works to his son, Jacob Jr., when the
latter returned from the Revolutionary War. He may have turned the business
over to his son, George. In those days, no recording of deeds was required
when property was transferred from father to son, so the possibility of
following the movement of people through transfer of property is made
difficult.

At the taking of the 1790 census, Jacob and Rachel Scagel were living in
Newbury, Orange County, Vermont. Official records there show that also in
Newbury, Vermont were Jacob’s sons, Jacob Jr., Elijah and William. No where is
mention made of George Scagel, Jacob’s son, being in Newbury.

George Scagel probably came to Waterbury from Saco, Maine as noted in the Bryan
family records. Later, George’s older brother, Jacob Jr., moved north to
Stanbridge East, Quebec. Also, later, Jacob and Rachel Scagel moved to
Waterbury. Later activity of Jacob is not known. He died March 18, 1817. We
have been unable to find a gravestone marking his place of burial. He was in
his 81st year, and his wife Rachel was nearly 84 years old. They had been
married for 62 years. Rachel continued to make her home with her son, George,
for another nineteen years.

Two of my grandfather’s brothers married two Scagel sisters from Standridge,
Quebec. They were second cousins. My second cousin Macie Bryan Evans is
descended from Jacob Scagel, from both her grandfather Denis Bryan and her
grandmother Mary Scagel Bryan.

The images of E. D. SCAGEL and his wife are 2-1/4 X 3-3/4 cartes-de-vistes images which have revenue stamps on the back indicating they were taken between 1864 and 1866. The tax stamps were required during the period 1 August 1864 to 1 August 1866. They were taken at the studio of S. O. Hersey in Montpelier, Vermont.

Emery D. Scagel was the son of Thomas Best Scagel and Chloe Fisk Dillingham, and a nephew of our ancestor Rachel Scagel who married Hiram Atwell.

William Henry Eldridge’s The Descendants of Samuel Henry and Lurana Cady Henry gives the following:

Eliza Betsey » Henry, (James Madison) was born in Waterbury, Vt., Dec. 31, 1837. She attended Chelsea and Barre Academies and taught school until the time of her marriage. She married Dec. 28, 1861, Emery Dillingham Scagel, born in Waterbury, Vt., Aug. 31, 1835. He attended Newbury Seminary and Fort Edward Institute. He was a chemist and druggist. She died in Waterbury, Mar. 14, 1866, and he died in Hoosick Falls, N. Y., Dec. 27, 1872. Both of their children were born in Waterbury : —

i. Dora Scagel, b. July 5, 1863; m. Aug. 4, 1885, Edwin Francis Cleveland. She d. Feb. 10, 1892.
They had four children: —
1. Mabel Floral Cleveland, b. Aug. 7, 1886: d. June 1895.
2. Frances Julia Cleveland, b. Apr. 30, 1888; m. in 1909, Perley G. Adams.
3. Ferdinand Scagel Cleveland, b. June, d. Oct. 1890.
4. Dora Eliza Cleveland, b. Feb. 9, 1892.

ii. Flora Scagel, b. Dec. 5, 1865. Resides 468 College St., Burlington, Vt.

Emery’s death is referred to in a letter from Sarah Atwell Gilbert to Caroline Atwell Noyes (both daughters of Hiram Atwell and Rachel Scagel, Caroline being our ancestor) written 21 Nov 1876.

“West went to VT this summer went to (unintelligible) at Waterbury took dinner with Uncle Best – Aunt Chloe is not there any more she died the last of July with softening of the brain Uncle Best said and that it was too much for her burying Mary and Emory I never have seen her since Mary was buried – the girls were there with him keeping home & going to school West went to the school house to see them said that Dora was quite slight and stooping but Flora was plump & very pretty. They have a little old house at the Mill Village.”

Flora and Dora were both daughters of Emery D. Scagel.

Olive Atwell FISK, sister of Hiram ATWELL, was living in Montpelier in 1880. It was in Montpelier that Sarah Atwell GILBERT, Hiram’s daughter, was buried in 1877 and was living there in 1870, but was in Boston at the time of her death.

The hair and what may be a hair ribbon in the in the image of Mrs.
Scagel, have the appearance of an etching which makes me wonder if
definition wasn’t added by the photographer.
