Daniel Levi BREWER was born 25 September 1823 in Mercer Co. KY, the 8th of 9 children, and the last of 4 sons born to Daniel A. BREWER Sr. of KY and Nancy SMITH. Nancy was 28 and Daniel Sr. was 29 when Daniel Levi was born.

Daniel married Catherine HEDDEN on 30 March 1843 in KY. Catherine was a daughter of William HEDDEN and Rachel VAN CLEAVE . She was about 21 and he about 22. Their first child, Sarah Elizabeth, was born within the first year, on December 22, 1843. They would have apparently 9 children altogether, born between 1843 and 1858.

There is purportedly a Kentucky marriage document for Daniel BREWER and Catherine HEDDEN. Nancy Benton, to whom a good bit of family information was passed along, mentions it as a supporting document, and the first 4 children are given as born in KY in the family history. However, Daniel A. BREWER appears in the 1840 Johnson County IN census. A Daniel BREWER is in the 1850 Putnam County IN census, and then in the 1860 Putnam Co. IN census, Daniel BREWER gives all his children as having been born in Indiana.

The family history reports the family went to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas, shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. This is also reportedly how Robert Harrington JOHNSON, grandfather of Delana FOWLER, wife of Daniel’s son David Nathaniel, died. I have wondered, as well as has Nancy Benton, if the death of Robert Harrington JOHNSON became somehow mixed up with Daniel Levi. No family history however was had on Delana’s grandparents, the genealogy originally ending with her mother, Mary Jane JOHNSON.

There is also confusion on where Daniel Levi died. He has also been given as dying in Fillmore Indiana.

Osage Mission was on land that wasn’t ceded over until 1865, and the ceding not proclaimed until 1867, but in anticipation of this a number of settlers had already moved in. 88 people resided there in 1860 and over 10,000 by 1870.

Following are the children of Daniel and Catherine:

1. Sarah Elizabeth, b. 22 Dec. 1843, d. 22 Oct. 1881 at about 38. She married twice. Her first marriage was 1867 to Elias WHITE, b. 1809 or 1791, d. 1873. They had three children: Perry Morgan WHITE, 21 April 1869 – Feb 1944; Minnie Catherine WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 1937; Minta WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 24 Jan 1872. Sarah Elizabeth married (2) George W. FLING on 1 Jan 1874.

3. Nancy, b. 11 Nov. 1847.
4. James Daniel, b. 13 April 1849, KY to 18 July 1916, Niotaze, KS. He married, on 16 Sept. 1867, at Catholic Mission, Neosho, Kansas, Amanda ULHMAN (also given as Maude Mary OULMAN). He married (2), on 26 April 1887, Sedan KS, Anna Dora LIAFE.Notes for James Daniel Brewer:
   

   Served in Union Army during Civil War. Worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a
   carpenter and helped build the first depot at Kansas City, Kansas, as well as the one at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He met a girl named “A Maude Mary An Oulman” living in Missouri. She was an orphan living with relatives. The family did not want her to marry James so she was placed in a Catholic convent somewhere in Missouri. She was unhappy there, and James stole her away and they went to Kansas City to be married.

   They later moved to Niotaze, Kansas and purchased 80 acres. They also had a general store there. He took a partner who ran the store while he continued to do carpenter work for the railroad. Built the depots at Sedan and Caney, Kansas. His partner absconded with $10,000 leaving James holding the bag of debts.

   In 1884 he married Anna Dora who was 19 years younger than he. They moved into OK Territory and he built depots at Shawnee and Meeker, OK. When the land was opened for settlement he drove a buggy with his son, Daniel, and a friend, Charlie Brown, into Lincoln County and homesteaded.

   The 1880 Chautauqua Sedan Township census shows James D. BREWER as 31 b. IN, parents b. KY, his wife, Amanda is 28 b. IN, her father from Hesse Cassel and mother from KY. Children are all born in KS: Elizabeth 11, Daniel 8, Edward 4, Atwill 1.

5. David Nathaniel, b. 31 Oct. 1850 in IN, married Delana FOWLER. My family’s direct line.
6. Rachel Jane, b. 6 Oct. 1852 in IN, d. 26 Sept. 1927 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and is buried in Niotaze. She married, 289 August 1866, Atwill (Atwell) HENDERSON b. 28 August 1844 at Beaufort Co. NC.
7. Brewer b. 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, died 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN.
8. Matilda C., b. 31 Jan. 1856, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN., died 14 July 1873 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and was buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery “3-4 miles north of the original home place” (Ed HENDERSON). She married, 19 Feb. 1869 at Neosho Co. KS, Russell HENDERSON, b. 26 May 1846, Beaufort Co., or Wake Co. NC. He died 8 May 1921 at Niotaze and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze. Russell married (2) Harriet RECARD b. IN; he married (3) Jennie. See Rachel for more information on the HENDERSON family. Matilda’s family had the oral history that she was Cherokee but I’ve not found anything to confirm this.

William G. Cutler’s “History of the State of Kansas” relates the
following on Osage Mission:

Previous to the organization of a town company or the laying out of a town site two buildings had been erected here, one by L. P. Foster & Co., a log one, in which a store was opened and managed by the “Morgan boys,” and a framebuilding erected by S. A. Williams, of Fort Scott, in which his son, Augustus D. Williams, kept a store. The movements were made in 1866, in anticipation of the starting of a town. A Town Company was organized consisting of George A. Crawford, S. A. Williams, C. W. Blair, Benjamin McDonald and John Nandier, a town site laid out and called Osage Mission., in December, 1867. By the side of it and to the west another town site was laid out and called Catholic Mission. On this town site a small store was opened by S. J. Gilmore, in a log building known then and still remembered as “Castle Thunder;” this store was opened in 1865. On Osage Mission townsite the Town Company erected a building on the corner of County and Market streets into which A. D. Williams moved his stock of goods in 1867, in which he kept the postoffice, with C. H. Howard as deputy. About the same time L. P. Foster & Co., erected a two story frame building across the street and a little north of the present site of the Southern Hotel. Joseph Roycroft built a log saloon near where now stands the City Bank; Middaugh and Dohnan came down from Topeka, and built a store where L. Steadman’s store now stands, in 1867; James Roycroft erected a boarding house, the first in town, on the southeast corner of County and Market Streets, and during the summer John Nandier built the first hotel, the Neosho House, a large two story frame, long known as the finest hotel building in Southern Kansas. Not long after this Nathaniel Tucker started a store near “Castle Thunder,” in the building now occupied as a dwelling by Daniel Zehner, and about the same time, perhaps a short time previously, Dr. J. B. Lamb started a store also in Catholic Mission. Marston & Ulmer, from Iowa, opened a furniture store in 1868. J. M. Boyle, from Fort Scott, opened a hardware store just north of L. P. Foster & Co.’s store, and on the southwest corner of County and Main streets, Ryan & Roycroft started a general store about the same time.

The first lawyer in the town was C. F. Hutchings, in 1867, the first physician, Dr. A. F. Neely, about the same time, and the first Protestant minister was Rev. A. Hitchcock. The first birth was that of a son to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Noble, 1868. From the first the growth of the town was vigorous and rapid. In August, 1868, it contained eight dry goods stores, three drug stores, one hardware store, two boot and shoe stores, four blacksmith shops, and numerous other business establishments, and a population of nearly nine hundred. From this time until the building of the railroad the growth of the town was steady. It was the center of three lines of stages; one to Fort Scott, one to Humboldt and the other to Chetopa. When these stages arrived all was life and animation. Each stage was a Concord coach drawn by four fine large horses, and the driver’s voice and importance, and the crack of his whip served to raise the excitement to the highest pitch, and is still vividly remembered. A more complete history of the town will be seen in the sketches of its individual industries and institutions…

…The first school in Osage Mission was the Mission School, begun by Father Schoenmakers in 1847. This, however, was an institution devoted to the education of Indians and in the interests of the Catholic Church.

There is some uncertainty as to place of Daniel Levi Brewer’s death. In a family sheet Nancy Benton was given, Daniel was given as dying in Filmore IN.

“Why, if he had moved to IL and then to KS? Did he go back for some reason and die there and Catherine and the kids stayed in KS? Also, the story mother told about him being killed when the oxen ran off–did she possibly have the grandfathers mixed up? According to the story in the McClean County, IL, history, that is how Robert Johnson, grandfather of Delana died. It seems strange that both of them would have died the same way.”

Catherine (Hedden) TILLEY, sister of Gilbert Hedden (Catherine Hedden BREWER’s grandfather) died 1861 in Putnam Co. IN and sister Susannah also died in Putnam Co. IN in 1885. Sister Mary died in Hendricks Co IN in 1885, and Ann died in Hendricks Co. IN in 1833.

Another sibling, Samuel, married Ruth GRIFFIN, and they had a son John who married Ann TILLEY. Their son, John was born 12 June 1846 in Putnam County IN. This Ann TILLEY appears to have been the daughter of Catherine (Hedden TILLEY and Lazarus TILLEY.

So there was a migration of the HEDDEN family in general, and associated families, to INDIANA.

Married in Kentucky. Lived in Indiana at one time. Moved to Bloomington, ILL. Came to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. Of German descent. (Pansy Bryant, granddaughter)

Catherine was born 21 Feb 1822 in Kentucky. She married Daniel Levi Brewer at about the age of 21, 30 March 1843, in Kentucky. They had 9 children between 1843 and 1858. They were on the 1850 and 1860 Putnam Co. census and relocated to Neosho Co., KS sometime before Daniel Levi Brewer died in 1868. After Daniel’s death, Catherine married John FOSTER in Neosho Co. KS in 1869. She died 25 May 1903 in Greenfield Missouri at the age of about 81.

Catherine’s mother was Rachel VAN CLEAVE. The VAN CLEAVE name appears repeatedly in these families. Charity, a sister of Daniel Levi BREWER, married Jesse VAN CLEAVE. James HEDDEN, Catherine’s grandfather’s brother, married Katherine VAN CLEAVE.
