John William Edward Myles and Sarena Dillon

John William Edward MYLES was born 17 March 1844 to Isaac Abner MYLES and Samantha Bickham Clower MYLES.

John was married 7 Sept 1865, at 21, to Sarena (Serena) “Rene” A. MILLER, b. 1846 MS. She was the daughter of Thomas MILLER and Maritty (Maritta) DILLON..

John and Sarena had the following children:

  • Newton R. b. 15 August 1866, Franklinton area, LA, died 7 Sept 1868 at the age of 2.
  • Nancy “Nora” Lenora b. 18 Nov 1867.
  • Isaac Thomas b. 7 March 1869 m. Lucy
  • Lucy Virginia b. 1871 Jan 28 married James Leon HENNESY
  • Samantha R. b. 10 Feb 1873
  • Margaret Maritta “Ritta” b. abt. 1875 according to the 1880 census
  • George b. 1877 Louisiana
  • John b. 1880-1887
  • Malissa b. c. 1884 married Henry Buchanan Crow
  • Lillie L. b. 1880 according to the 1880 census
  • Effie b. c. 1887 Louisiana married William J. Carpenter

Edward MYLES is given by his descendants as having been a farmer and county surveyor. In the 1880 census he is shown as being a schoolteacher.

In “LOUISIANA GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, BE IT KNOWN AND REMEMBERED Volume Two Bible Records 1961: Pages 1 – 60 Bible of Samanthy Lewis” Edward MYLES is given as having married Sarena MILLER, not Lucy MILLER as per some of the initial info I’d been given. This fits in with Jean Kearns having written of Edward’s spouse being Rene. Rene would be a nickname of Sarena.

Notes on children in bible:

Newton R. 1st child of Ed MYLES and Serena
Nancy Lenora, 2nd child of Ed and Serena called Nora
3rd child of same, Isaac Thomas — Ambus’ father
4th child was Lucy.
5th child was Samantha
6th child was Margaret Maritta, called “Ritta”

Joint statement of Lillie MYLES, Malissa Myles CROW and Olivia Bickham NETTERVILLE (1st 2 daughters of Ed Myles, and last, dau. of Abner Clower BICKHAM).

“Four little ones of Ed and Serena in order: a crippled boy — Lillie, single — John — Malissa married CROW –Effie, now dead, married Will CARPENTER.”

Lillie is the Lyly L. seen in the 1880 census.

Edward may be seen in the Washington Parish 1888 Voter Registration Record. I have thus far located the family in the following censuses:

Isaac Abner Myles and Samantha Ann Clower

Isaac Aber MYLES married, on 30 Nov. 1841, Samantha CLOWER b. 22 April 1811, Freestone Co. TX or LA to John CLOWER Jr. and Mary “Polly” PLEASANT.

Isaac Abner MYLES was first married to Pamela (Passman) (Carman) HART b. 9 Nov 1796, died 6 Sept 1840 at 4 AM. In LOUISIANA GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, BE IT KNOWN AND REMEMBERED Volume Two Bible Records 1961: Pages 1 – 60 Bible of Samanthy Lewis, a Pamela HART is given as born November 8 1796. Isaac A. MYLES was married to Pemela PASSMAN on December 18th. Mrs. Pamela MYLES departed this life on September 6th 1840 about 43 years 9 months and 28 days. I’m assuming that Pamela HART and PASSMAN are the same individual.

It then gives Isaac as marrying Samantha BICKHAM on November 30th 1841.

Samantha was first married in 1829 to John BURCH Sr., who died between 1832 and 1836. Their children were Mary Drusilla R. BURCH b. 1829 and John Richard BURCH Jr. b. 1832.

Samantha married 2nd Thomas BICKHAM, bef. 1841, son of Captain Abner BICKHAM and Dicy. Their children were Dicy Elizabeth BICKHAM b. 1832 and Abner Clower BICKHAM b. 1836.

The children of the 3rd marriage, to Isaac Aber MYLES were:

  • John William Edward MYLES b. 17 March 1844, married Sarena MILLER
  • Mary Rebecca MYLES b. 23 November 1846 4:45 AM, married, 1 Jan 1862, Charles (Charley) Jefferson BURCH b. 7 May 1843. Charles Jefferson BURCH was a son of Charles BURCH, born 1804, married Lothe. This Charles BURCH was brother of John BURCH Sr. who was Samantha BICKHAM CLOWER’s first husband.

Samantha’s 4th marriage was to Coleman HOLMES. They married before 1860 and he died before 1860.

Samantha’s 5th marriage, 5 July 1860, was to William LEWIS. They had no children.

I have thus far located Isaac on the following censuses:

1830 WASHINGTON PARISH LOUISIANA CENSUS

Isaac Abner MYLES is seen in the census, living between Solomon HALL and Clayborn HART. He has 1 free white male 10 to 15, 1 free white male 20 to 30, 1 free white male 40 to 50, 1 free white female 10 to 15, 1 free white female 15 to 20 and 1 free white female 30 to 40. They had 27 slaves.

John BIRCH is seen on pg. 4 with 1 male age 20 to 30, 1 female under 5 and 1 female 15 to 20. They have 2 slaves. Two doors down is an Abner BICKHAM and further down the page is a Thomas BICKHAM with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5 to 10, 1 male 10 to 15, 2 males 15 to 20, 1 male 20 to 30, 1 male 30 to 40, 1 male 60 to 70, 2 females 5 to 10, 1 female 10 to 15 and 1 female 40 to 50. They have 17 slaves.

Thomas Miller and Maritta Dillon

Thomas Miller was born abt. 1822 in MS. In the 1880 census he gives his father as born in TN and his mother as born in MS. He married Maritty (Maritta) DILLON, also born abt. 1822 in Mississippi.

Thomas and Maritty had the following children:

  • Samantha b. 1842 MS
  • Merril N. b. 1844 MS
  • Sarena (Serena) “Rene” A. b. 1846 MS married John William Edward MYLES
  • William N. b. 1848 MS
  • Eliza E. b. 1850 MS

The 1850 Pike County MS census has a 4 year old Sarena MILLER in the household of Thomas MILLER born in Mississippi. They are living near a James T. DILLON who is of age to be a brother to Maritty DILLON. I would imagine that the Simon MILLER living beside Thomas is a brother.

A Richard DILLON b. 7 Oct. 1745 in Ireland or Norfolk VA (d. Pike Co. MS) and Annys MORRIS (b. 1762 in Bertie Co. NC) were the parents of Joanna DILLON b. 1778 in Bertie Co. NC, Nancy Ann, Lawrence, Clarkson, Willis, Mary, Theophilous and Clara. Joanna DILLON connects up with the family as will be shown in a moment.

As to Mary and Lawrence, siblings of Joanna, Belvin J. Creel is shown as querying Washington Parish Rootsweb about a Moses MILLER b. abt. 1790 who was the second husband of Mary DILLON (Salathiel MORRIS the first husband) b. abt. 1792; and Dicey MILLER who was the second wife of Lawrence DILLON (b. 1783 in Bertie Co. NC), he marrying first Martha JACKSON. As stated above, they were descendants of of Richard and Annys DILLON. Richard (1745-1833) was a Revolutionary War Soldier who settled in the southern section of present-day Walthall County, MS, his family spilling over into Washington Parish. Another son, Clarkson DILLON, married a Sarah GILL. (Should be noted here that Thomas and Maritty DILLON MILLER’s granddaughter, Lucy MYLES, married James Leon HENNESY, whose grandfather, Isaac HENNESY, was married to a Judith Ann GILL.)

Judith GILL and Isaac HENNESY’s son, James HENNESY, married Nancy Caroline WELCH and they had James Leon who, as mentioned, married Lucy MYLES, whose mother was Serena MILLER. Nancy Caroline WELCH’s brother, James Pearson WELCH married Cynthia ALFORD. Cynthia ALFORD was daughter of Warren Jackson ALFORD and Celia Ann LEWIS. Her father’s parents were Edwin ALFORD b. 22 Nov. 1792 NC, and Martha “Patsie” Jane SMITH b. 25 March 1802 SC. She is shown in the 1850 Pike Co MS census on page 21b living next to a 60 year old Thompson MILLER from GA in household 274. I’m wondering if this might be a relation to Rene MILLER. (Rene MILLER is in household 268 on page 21 A.)

Martha Jane SMITH’s parents were Jeremiah SMITH b. 1773 SC and the Joanna DILLON above mentioned, daughter of Richard DILLON and Annys MORRIS. (Walter Edwin Tynes is given as saying Martha Smith’s mother was a “Holly”. The Joanna Dillon information comes from Luke Ward Conerly and E. Russ Williams, Source Records from Pike County, Mississippi, 1798-1910, via Colleen Pasquale.

The 1840 Washington Parish LA census shows a Thomas MILLER.
