Carr’s Chapel Cemetery

Courtesy of Nancy Benton, this document shows the rows in which certain members of the Brewer family are buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery in Dade county, Missouri.

In row 1 is Mary Johnson Fowler, wife of John Fowler (direct line), Catherine Hedden Brewer, wife of Daniel Levi Brewer (direct line), Alva Brewer, son of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Fowler, David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Fowler Brewer (direct line).

In row 2, we have, Robert Lincoln Trent and his first wife, Dora Nancy Fowler Trent, daughter of John and Mary Jane Fowler, and an infant that would have been a child of Robert and an infant who perhaps died at the same time as Dora. Elmer Brewer was a son of David Nathaniel and Delana Brewer. Next to him are his daughters Ruby Ellen and Nora Edith who both died in 1918, perhaps victims of the great influenza epidemic. We see next to them Robert Walter Brewer and his wife, Edith, and their son Robert.

Noyes Family Gathering (fix)

Courtesy of Nancy Benton we have this photo of a Noyes family gathering in Liberal, Missouri circa 1932.

From left to right: Jamie Noyes; Ray Noyes behind Mary Lou Noyes; Charles Bryant with Viola Noyes Harmon in front of him and Kathleen Bryant in front of Viola; Pansy Bryant, Lloyd McKinney with Dorothy in front of him and Jim McKinney in front of her; Ray Bryant with Delana Brewer in front of him; Betty Noyes. Photo circa 1932 or 1933, taken on the South side of the Noyes home, a mile east and about 1/2 mile south of the town of Liberal. The image is courtesy Nancy Benton who supplies identification.

Jamie, Mary Lou, Viola, Pansy and Dorothy (direct line) were children of Ray Noyes and Bettie Brewer. Charles Bryant was married to Pansy. Viola Noyes Harmon was Ray’s sister and wife of Ollie Harmon. Delana Brewer was Bettie Brewer Noyes’ mother.

Before 1939 Brewer, Spurling and Jones Family Gathering

This photo of a family gathering, supplied by Nancy Benton, is of an event which would have occurred before 1939 as Delana Fowler Brewer is shown and she died November 4, 1939 at Oscaloosa in Dade County, Missouri.

The first photo is the original.

Brewer-Spurling-Jones Family Gathering

Just wanted to show that because I needed to mock up a lower part of the photo in order to not cut out the gentleman on the left.

Original. Courtesy Nancy Benton.

Below, to add some definition, I did a quick color job, nothing detailed as the photo is too lo-fi.

Brewer-Spurling-Jones family gathering, tinted

Now for identifications supplied by Nancy Benton. The third man over in the back row (with the hat) is Charles Bryant, b. 1890, husband of Pansy Ruth Noyes. In front of him is Delana Fowler Brewer, b. 1854, the matriarch of this clan photo. The woman behind the smallest girl is Edith Gilmore Brewer b. abt. 1894, wife of Robert Walter Brewer, b. 1890, a son of Delana’s. Next to her is Bettie Brewer Noyes, daughter of Delana, b. 1877. Between and behind them is Pansy Noyes Bryant, b. 1895. The man next to Pansy (looking over Bettie’s left shoulder) is Walter Brewer and Jessie Brewer Jones, another daughter of Delana’s, b. 1888, is to the right of Bettie.

I think the man on the far right would be Levy Jones, b. 1883, husband of Jessie Brewer Jones.

All the individuals to our left of Delana are unidentified, as is the woman with the curly dark hair standing to the right of Delana. The two girls in front are unidentified. The man standing hidden behind the two women in the middle of the photo is unidentified. The young man limbing the house is unidentified, as is the young man behind Jessie Brewer Jones.

The Spurlings are Mary Katherine Brewer Spurling, b. 1872, another daughter of Delana’s. She married three times, to a George Spurling, and they had a son named Earl, and also to a man named Rhodes (this was before 1939) and a Robert L. Trent. I don’t know the order of the marriages.

If Mary Katherine Brewer Spurling is in the photo, she is in her 60s and is either going to be the woman on the far left or the woman standing to the right of Delana (just left of center of the photo).

Dorothy Noyes McKenney (a daughter of Bettie Brewer Noyes) and her husband, Lloyd, aren’t in the photo. Also, Ray Noyes, husband of Bettie Brewer Noyes, wasn’t identified by Nancy Benton as being in the photo.

The reunion was perhaps to honor Delana, who died at the age of 85 in 1939. I don’t know the location of the photo but it is likely in Dade county, Missouri.

Another photo from the same gathering shows Bettie Brewer Noyes, sister Jessie Brewer Jones, their mother Delana, and an unknown individual. I imagine it is one of Delana’s sons, possibly Robert Walter who is seen in the family group picture as well but his face is obscured in the second row.

Here, I’ve tried to add a little more body to it.

Family of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Jane Fowler

Rarely do I have a photo showing a full family and am lucky to have this as it has enabled me to make possible identifications on other photos.

Shown in the photo are top row, left to right: Dan, Bettie, Lewis, Jessie, Elmer. Bottom row left to right: Mary, Dave, Walter, Delana, John.

This was taken, what, circa 1909 or 1910 in likely Dade county, Missouri.

A post on the family is here.

Daniel b. 1874 was the third child, Bettie b. 1877 was the fifth, Lewis, born 1880 was the 6th child, not shown is the 7th child named Lois who only lived 1880 to 1881, Jessie b. 1888 was the 10th child, Elmer b. 1883 was the 8th child. Mary b. 1872 was the 2nd child, Dave is the father b. 1850, Walter was the 11th child b. 1890, Delana is the mother b. 1854, and John is the eldest child b. 1869.

Not shown also is Alva who lived from 1885 to 1909. My belief is his death was likely the inspiration for this family photo. Robert Walter was driving a buggy through a creek, and the buggy overturned, throwing “the boys” out. Alva, trying to help the horse out, stepped into a deep hole and was drowned and not found until the following day.

Note that in the front row we have the eldest daughter sitting beside her father, the eldest boy sitting beside the mother, and Walter, the youngest, who was with Alva when he drowned, in the center between his parents.

I tried to tidy it up a bit.

David Brewer, son of David Nathaniel, with wife Eva and daughter Addie.

Starting front left going right: Wilma, John’s mom (Delana Fowler), Monte, John, Eva holding John.

Behind them left to right: Uncle Walter, Aunt Edith, Uncle Roy, Maude, Addie, Bill Smith holding Irene, (the group of 3 is of Albert, Ralph, and Lewis but Shirley isn’t sure which).

According to this then.

Wilma Brewer was born 1907 and looks to be about 3 years of age here. Delana Fowler Brewer, the matriarch of the clan here, was born in 1854. Monte Brewer was born in 1905. John David Brewer was born in 1869 and so is about 40 here. Eva Hall Brewer was born also about 1869. The child in her lap is John who was born 1909.

Daisie (Daisy), the girl standing to the left behind Delana, was born in 1898. Flora was born 1896.

Walter Brewer, son of Delana and David Nathaniel Brewer, was born 1890. His wife, Edith, was born in 1894, so she would be about 16 here. Uncle Roy and Maude would be Clara Maudline (Maude) b. 1892 and her husband Roy Carrico. Addie Brewer was born in 1890. Bill Smith would be her husband and Irene their daughter. Ralph Brewer was born 1901 and would be 9 here. Albert Brewer was born 1894 and so would have been 16 in this photo and must be the taller boy, still short. Lewis Brewer was born 1903 and would be 7.

All the children of John David and Eva had to 1910 are thus all shown here. They would have two more after this picture: Elizabeth b. 1912 and Lellia b. 1915.

John David Brewer, b. 1869 December 10 at Osage Mission, Neosho, KS, married Eva Hall about 1889.

The 1900 census showed them as living in Ozark, Barton county, Missouri. They reside by Frank Bevans, whose son Frank Jr. would marry Mary Louise “Mary Lou” Noyes in 1929:

Five Generations of Brewers

Five Generations article courtesy Nancy Benton

This picture shows five generations of one family–and the infant who is the fifth generation perhaps has more living grandparents than any other child in the Ozarks; certainly more than most for she has 11.

In the center of the picture is Mrs. D. L. Brewer, 87, of Arcola, the baby’s great-greatgrandmother. At the left in the middle row is her son, Dan Brewer, 61, of Arcola; his wife is just below him at the left in the front row. They are the baby’s great-grandparents. At the top left and center are Mr. and Mrs. Schuyler Brewer, the infant’s grandparents, also of Arcola. Mr. Brewer is 40. At the right of the top is the baby’s father, Gilbert Pyle, of Jerico Springs, and his wife, Pansy Brewer Pyle, is holding their six-months-old daughter, Peggy Lou Pyle.

Peggy Lou’s other living grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Pemberton, Mrs. Schuyler Brewer’s parents; Mr. and Mrs. Cortes Pyle, her great-grandparents, and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Pyle, her grandparents, on the father’s side of the house. Both Pyle families are of Stockton.

Delana Louise Jane Fowler Brewer (grandmother of Dorothy Noyes mcKenney) was born in 1854 and died in 1939 at the age of 85, so the article is wrong as to her age.

Her son Daniel was born in 1874 in Barton county, Missouri and was 61 in 1935, so I’ll place this article as being in 1935. His wife was Rose Trent b. 1878 in KS and died in 1948. They were married March 25 1895 in Girard, Crawford, Kansas.

Daniel and Rose had two children, Schuyler b. abt 1897 and Davie b. abt 1902. Schuyler married Gladys Pemberton who was born abt 1899 in Missouri. They had three children: Odilla b. abt 1915, Pansy b. abt 1917 and Schuyler Jr. b. abt 1919.

Pansy married Gilbert C. Pyle.

In 1920 Daniel was living in North, Dade, Missouri. His nephew, Ralph, was living with them. Ralph was a son of John David Brewer:

The 1920 census shows the following for Schuyler in Polk, Dade, Missouri:

Schuyler’s uncle, Robert Walter Brewer, was married to an Edith S. Gilmore. I think it likely that Andrew was a relation.

The 1930 census shows for Schuyler and Dan that they were living next to each other and that Delana was in Dan’s household:

Delana Fowler Brewer and Family, Spring-Summer circa 1924

Delana Brewer and family, circa 1924

This photo is courtesy Nancy Benton who supplied identification. Left to right: Levy Jones with hands on son Herbert’s shoulder, Delana Brewer, Mary Brewer Spurling with Katherine (child of Mary or Jessie) in front; Jessie Brewer Jones; Bettie Brewer Noyes with Lena Minor in front; Mary Lou Noyes and Dorothy Noyes.

Delana Brewer and family, tinted, c. 1924

Delana Fowler Brewer was the wife of David Nathaniel who’d died in 1921 in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. Levy Jones was a son-in-law, husband of daughter Jessie. Mary Brewer was another daughter, as was Bettie Brewer Noyes, wife of Ray Noyes. Mary Lou and Dorothy were daughters of Bettie Noyes. Lena Minor was a granddaughter of Bettie Brewer Noyes by Cora Vera Noyes and John J. Minor, Cora’s first husband.

Wonderfully enough, Jim and Dieanna Swearngin sent me a photo from the same reunion that had come down through Dieanna’s family which shows everyone gathered in front of the porch.

From the look of the front porch, I think this photo was taken at the Ray Noyes home in Liberal, Missouri.

Daniel Levi Brewer and Catherine Hedden

Daniel and Catherine Brewer reconstruction

Daniel Levi BREWER was born 25 September 1823 in Mercer Co. KY, the 8th of 9 children, and the last of 4 sons born to Daniel A. BREWER Sr. of KY and Nancy SMITH. Nancy was 28 and Daniel Sr. was 29 when Daniel Levi was born.

Daniel married Catherine HEDDEN on 30 March 1843 in KY. Catherine was a daughter of William HEDDEN and Rachel VAN CLEAVE . She was about 21 and he about 22. Their first child, Sarah Elizabeth, was born within the first year, on December 22, 1843. They would have apparently 9 children altogether, born between 1843 and 1858.

There is purportedly a Kentucky marriage document for Daniel BREWER and Catherine HEDDEN. Nancy Benton, to whom a good bit of family information was passed along, mentions it as a supporting document, and the first 4 children are given as born in KY in the family history. However, Daniel A. BREWER appears in the 1840 Johnson County IN census. A Daniel BREWER is in the 1850 Putnam County IN census, and then in the 1860 Putnam Co. IN census, Daniel BREWER gives all his children as having been born in Indiana.

The family history reports the family went to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas, shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. This is also reportedly how Robert Harrington JOHNSON, grandfather of Delana FOWLER, wife of Daniel’s son David Nathaniel, died. I have wondered, as well as has Nancy Benton, if the death of Robert Harrington JOHNSON became somehow mixed up with Daniel Levi. No family history however was had on Delana’s grandparents, the genealogy originally ending with her mother, Mary Jane JOHNSON.

There is also confusion on where Daniel Levi died. He has also been given as dying in Fillmore Indiana.

Osage Mission was on land that wasn’t ceded over until 1865, and the ceding not proclaimed until 1867, but in anticipation of this a number of settlers had already moved in. 88 people resided there in 1860 and over 10,000 by 1870.

Following are the children of Daniel and Catherine:

  1. Sarah Elizabeth, b. 22 Dec. 1843, d. 22 Oct. 1881 at about 38. She married twice. Her first marriage was 1867 to Elias WHITE, b. 1809 or 1791, d. 1873. They had three children: Perry Morgan WHITE, 21 April 1869 – Feb 1944; Minnie Catherine WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 1937; Minta WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 24 Jan 1872. Sarah Elizabeth married (2) George W. FLING on 1 Jan 1874.
  2. William H., b. 18 Nov. 1845.
  3. Nancy, b. 11 Nov. 1847.
  4. James Daniel, b. 13 April 1849, KY to 18 July 1916, Niotaze, KS. He married, on 16 Sept. 1867, at Catholic Mission, Neosho, Kansas, Amanda ULHMAN (also given as Maude Mary OULMAN). He married (2), on 26 April 1887, Sedan KS, Anna Dora LIAFE.Notes for James Daniel Brewer:

Served in Union Army during Civil War. Worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a
carpenter and helped build the first depot at Kansas City, Kansas, as well as the one at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He met a girl named “A Maude Mary An Oulman” living in Missouri. She was an orphan living with relatives. The family did not want her to marry James so she was placed in a Catholic convent somewhere in Missouri. She was unhappy there, and James stole her away and they went to Kansas City to be married.

They later moved to Niotaze, Kansas and purchased 80 acres. They also had a general store there. He took a partner who ran the store while he continued to do carpenter work for the railroad. Built the depots at Sedan and Caney, Kansas. His partner absconded with $10,000 leaving James holding the bag of debts.

In 1884 he married Anna Dora who was 19 years younger than he. They moved into OK Territory and he built depots at Shawnee and Meeker, OK. When the land was opened for settlement he drove a buggy with his son, Daniel, and a friend, Charlie Brown, into Lincoln County and homesteaded.

The 1880 Chautauqua Sedan Township census shows James D. BREWER as 31 b. IN, parents b. KY, his wife, Amanda is 28 b. IN, her father from Hesse Cassel and mother from KY. Children are all born in KS: Elizabeth 11, Daniel 8, Edward 4, Atwill 1.

  5. David Nathaniel, b. 31 Oct. 1850 in IN, married Delana FOWLER. My family’s direct line.
  6. Rachel Jane, b. 6 Oct. 1852 in IN, d. 26 Sept. 1927 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and is buried in Niotaze. She married, 289 August 1866, Atwill (Atwell) HENDERSON b. 28 August 1844 at Beaufort Co. NC.
  7. Brewer b. 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, died 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN.
  8. Matilda C., b. 31 Jan. 1856, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN., died 14 July 1873 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and was buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery “3-4 miles north of the original home place” (Ed HENDERSON). She married, 19 Feb. 1869 at Neosho Co. KS, Russell HENDERSON, b. 26 May 1846, Beaufort Co., or Wake Co. NC. He died 8 May 1921 at Niotaze and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze. Russell married (2) Harriet RECARD b. IN; he married (3) Jennie. See Rachel for more information on the HENDERSON family. Matilda’s family had the oral history that she was Cherokee but I’ve not found anything to confirm this.
  9. Brewer, b. 13 Jan 1858, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, and died 13 Jan 1858 at same.

William G. Cutler’s “History of the State of Kansas” relates the
following on Osage Mission:

Previous to the organization of a town company or the laying out of a town site two buildings had been erected here, one by L. P. Foster & Co., a log one, in which a store was opened and managed by the “Morgan boys,” and a framebuilding erected by S. A. Williams, of Fort Scott, in which his son, Augustus D. Williams, kept a store. The movements were made in 1866, in anticipation of the starting of a town. A Town Company was organized consisting of George A. Crawford, S. A. Williams, C. W. Blair, Benjamin McDonald and John Nandier, a town site laid out and called Osage Mission., in December, 1867. By the side of it and to the west another town site was laid out and called Catholic Mission. On this town site a small store was opened by S. J. Gilmore, in a log building known then and still remembered as “Castle Thunder;” this store was opened in 1865. On Osage Mission townsite the Town Company erected a building on the corner of County and Market streets into which A. D. Williams moved his stock of goods in 1867, in which he kept the postoffice, with C. H. Howard as deputy. About the same time L. P. Foster & Co., erected a two story frame building across the street and a little north of the present site of the Southern Hotel. Joseph Roycroft built a log saloon near where now stands the City Bank; Middaugh and Dohnan came down from Topeka, and built a store where L. Steadman’s store now stands, in 1867; James Roycroft erected a boarding house, the first in town, on the southeast corner of County and Market Streets, and during the summer John Nandier built the first hotel, the Neosho House, a large two story frame, long known as the finest hotel building in Southern Kansas. Not long after this Nathaniel Tucker started a store near “Castle Thunder,” in the building now occupied as a dwelling by Daniel Zehner, and about the same time, perhaps a short time previously, Dr. J. B. Lamb started a store also in Catholic Mission. Marston & Ulmer, from Iowa, opened a furniture store in 1868. J. M. Boyle, from Fort Scott, opened a hardware store just north of L. P. Foster & Co.’s store, and on the southwest corner of County and Main streets, Ryan & Roycroft started a general store about the same time.

The first lawyer in the town was C. F. Hutchings, in 1867, the first physician, Dr. A. F. Neely, about the same time, and the first Protestant minister was Rev. A. Hitchcock. The first birth was that of a son to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Noble, 1868. From the first the growth of the town was vigorous and rapid. In August, 1868, it contained eight dry goods stores, three drug stores, one hardware store, two boot and shoe stores, four blacksmith shops, and numerous other business establishments, and a population of nearly nine hundred. From this time until the building of the railroad the growth of the town was steady. It was the center of three lines of stages; one to Fort Scott, one to Humboldt and the other to Chetopa. When these stages arrived all was life and animation. Each stage was a Concord coach drawn by four fine large horses, and the driver’s voice and importance, and the crack of his whip served to raise the excitement to the highest pitch, and is still vividly remembered. A more complete history of the town will be seen in the sketches of its individual industries and institutions…

…The first school in Osage Mission was the Mission School, begun by Father Schoenmakers in 1847. This, however, was an institution devoted to the education of Indians and in the interests of the Catholic Church.

23. Death: 1868 Apr 20.
There is some uncertainty as to place of Daniel Levi Brewer’s death. In a family sheet Nancy Benton was given, Daniel was given as dying in Filmore IN.

“Why, if he had moved to IL and then to KS? Did he go back for some reason and die there and Catherine and the kids stayed in KS? Also, the story mother told about him being killed when the oxen ran off–did she possibly have the grandfathers mixed up? According to the story in the McClean County, IL, history, that is how Robert Johnson, grandfather of Delana died. It seems strange that both of them would have died the same way.”

Catherine (Hedden) TILLEY, sister of Gilbert Hedden (Catherine Hedden BREWER’s grandfather) died 1861 in Putnam Co. IN and sister Susannah also died in Putnam Co. IN in 1885. Sister Mary died in Hendricks Co IN in 1885, and Ann died in Hendricks Co. IN in 1833.

Another sibling, Samuel, married Ruth GRIFFIN, and they had a son John who married Ann TILLEY. Their son, John was born 12 June 1846 in Putnam County IN. This Ann TILLEY appears to have been the daughter of Catherine (Hedden TILLEY and Lazarus TILLEY.

So there was a migration of the HEDDEN family in general, and associated families, to INDIANA.

Married in Kentucky. Lived in Indiana at one time. Moved to Bloomington, ILL. Came to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. Of German descent. (Pansy Bryant, granddaughter)

Catherine was born 21 Feb 1822 in Kentucky. She married Daniel Levi Brewer at about the age of 21, 30 March 1843, in Kentucky. They had 9 children between 1843 and 1858. They were on the 1850 and 1860 Putnam Co. census and relocated to Neosho Co., KS sometime before Daniel Levi Brewer died in 1868. After Daniel’s death, Catherine married John FOSTER in Neosho Co. KS in 1869. She died 25 May 1903 in Greenfield Missouri at the age of about 81.

Catherine’s mother was Rachel VAN CLEAVE. The VAN CLEAVE name appears repeatedly in these families. Charity, a sister of Daniel Levi BREWER, married Jesse VAN CLEAVE. James HEDDEN, Catherine’s grandfather’s brother, married Katherine VAN CLEAVE.

Retouched

Sometimes with retouching, making the image a little livelier, bringing back in some depth, I both clean and grunge it up a little.

Delana Louise Fowler Brewer, daughter of John B. Fowler b. 1827 and Mary Jane Johnson b. 1832 married David Nathaniel Brewer. She was born 1854 at Bloomington, McLean, Illinois and died 1939 at Oscaloosa, Dade, Missouri. This photo would likely have been taken in Barton County, Missouri.
