Carr’s Chapel Cemetery

Courtesy of Nancy Benton, this document shows the rows in which certain members of the Brewer family are buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery in Dade county, Missouri.

In row 1 is Mary Johnson Fowler, wife of John Fowler (direct line), Catherine Hedden Brewer, wife of Daniel Levi Brewer (direct line), Alva Brewer, son of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Fowler, David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Fowler Brewer (direct line).

In row 2, we have, Robert Lincoln Trent and his first wife, Dora Nancy Fowler Trent, daughter of John and Mary Jane Fowler, and an infant that would have been a child of Robert and an infant who perhaps died at the same time as Dora. Elmer Brewer was a son of David Nathaniel and Delana Brewer. Next to him are his daughters Ruby Ellen and Nora Edith who both died in 1918, perhaps victims of the great influenza epidemic. We see next to them Robert Walter Brewer and his wife, Edith, and their son Robert.

Obituaries for Elizabeth “Bettie” Brewer Noyes of Liberal, Missouri

We have two obituaries for Bettie Brewer. I appear to have lost the obitnoyesbbettie1.gif of the below obituary, but still have the second. Both were courtesy of Nancy Benton.

Elizabeth “Bettie” Brewer Noyes (line of the blog’s author) was the wife of Ray Noyes and daughter of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Fowler.

WIDOW OF LATE RAY NOYES–LIFETIME RESIDENT OF LIBERAL–HER FIRST BAPTISM–IN LIBERAL METHODIST CHURCH–SON AND THREE DAUGHTERS SURVIVE–FUNERAL SATURDAY AFTERNOON

“Mrs. Bettie NOYES, eighty-six, lifetime and prominent resident of the Liberal community, died at Oak Haven rest home at FT. SCOTT, Tuesday forenoon. The eighty six year old woman had been in frail health for the past five years, suffering from degeneration of the circulatory system. She had been a patient in the FT.SCOTT rest home for the past eighteen months.

“She was born on the farm of her parents, David Nathaniel BREWER and Delanie Louise BREWER, three and a half miles northeast of Liberal, July 22, 1877. She was married to Ray NOYES, a young LIBERAL farmer, in 1895.

“She and her husband settled on the Noyes homestead in the LIBERAL vicinity following their marriage, where they reared their children and took a prominent part in the general affairs of the community and in the Methodist church. At the death of her husband in 1941, the widow took up residence in LIBERAL where she remained until it was necessary for her to enter the rest home.

“She was the first person to be baptized as a member of the Methodist Church, in the organization of which her father had played a leading role. She was twelve years of age at that time, and maintained an abiding and devoted interest in the church throughout her lifetime.

“She leaves one son, Jim NOYES, widely known and successful LIBERAL farmer; and three daughters, Mrs. Charley BRYANT, well-known Liberal woman, Mrs. Cora DIXON, Shreveport, Louisiana, and Mrs. Lloyd MCKENNEY of Carthage. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou HURT, died in 1953.

“The body was taken to the Komantz (?) funeral home at FT. SCOTT to be prepared for burial. The last rites were set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist church at LIBERAL, the Rev. Lavrey LANEVILLE (?) officiating. Internment follows in the Liberal City….”

The second obituary for Bettie Brewer reads:

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. BETTY NOYES

“Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Noyes who died July 9 at Oak Haven rest home in Fort Scott were held last Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Liberal Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. Larry Linville, officiating.

“Mrs. Evan Cooper and Mrs. Howard Talbott sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Rock of Ages.”

“Casket bearers were Albert Snodgrass, Raymond (?), Frank Miller, Rex Jackman, Bob Williams and Francis Jones.

“Mrs. Noyes was born July 22 1877 on a farm three and a half miles northeast of Liberal, the daughter of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Brewer. She was married to Ray Noyes in 1895. They settled on a homestead in this vicinity and lived there until the death of Mr. Noyes in 1941. Mrs. Noyes moved into town after the death of her husband and resided at ther home on north Main street until 18 months ago when she entered the home at Fort Scott.

“Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Benton and family of Tulsa, Okla., Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Smith of Selah, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. David Brewer, Mrs. A. Montgomery and Mrs. A. Moore of Everton, Mr. and Mrs. Schyler Brewer and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Brewer of Stockton, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brewer, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brewer of Joplin, Mrs. and Mrs. Phillip Hurt and family of Prairie Village, Kan., Mrs. Stella Poindexter of Greenfield, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Spurling of Mapleton, Kan., Mrs. Pearl Ferona (?) of Lamar and Mr. and Mrs. John Daly of Carthage. ”

COMMENT: The Dalys were close friends of daughter Dorothy Nadeen and her husband, Lloyd McKENNEY. It would be interesting to know who the family of Vernon SMITH was, who came from Selah Washington for the funeral, Selah being where Jessie Brewer JONES, Bettie’s sister, had moved.

Photos of David Nathaniel Brewer, Rachel Jane Brewer Henderson and Lewis Brewer

The digital file of this photo came to me via Dieanna and Jim Swearngin. They were uncertain of who the woman in the photo was. Fortunately, I have a photo of Rachel Jane Brewer Henderson from this era and it matches her in appearance. David Nathaniel Brewer b. 1850 Oct 31 at Pleasant, Steuben, Indiana, was a sibling of Rachel Jane Brewer b. 1852 Oct 6 at Terra Haute, Vigo, Indiana. She married Atwell Henderson 1866 in Moutrie, Illinois and they settled in Chautauqua County, Kansas. David married Delana L. Jane Fowler 1869 March 1 at Osage Mission, Neosho, Kansas and they settled first in Central, Barton county, Missouri and then in Dade county, Missouri. I’m currently uncertain where this photo might have been taken, but as it passed down through the Levy Jones and Jessie Brewer Jones family it may have been taken in Dade county where Jessie and Levy lived.

Courtesy of Jim and Dieanna Swearingen

Above is the original photo. As with almost all my files, it was a small digital file but I thought it might be nice to try touching it up just a little in order to distinguish David and Rachel just a little from the surroundings.

Another photo appears to be from the same day and shows three unidentified men.

I did a little fixing up of it.

Brewer men

My guess is that Lewis Brewer is the individual in the middle, b. 1880, son of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Fowler Brewer.

Here is a group shot of David and Delana’s family showing Lewis Brewer. He is the man in the middle of the top row. To learn more about the below photo click here.

Here, I’ve tried to add a little more body to it.

Family of David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Jane Fowler

Rarely do I have a photo showing a full family and am lucky to have this as it has enabled me to make possible identifications on other photos.

Shown in the photo are top row, left to right: Dan, Bettie, Lewis, Jessie, Elmer. Bottom row left to right: Mary, Dave, Walter, Delana, John.

This was taken, what, circa 1909 or 1910 in likely Dade county, Missouri.

A post on the family is here.

Daniel b. 1874 was the third child, Bettie b. 1877 was the fifth, Lewis, born 1880 was the 6th child, not shown is the 7th child named Lois who only lived 1880 to 1881, Jessie b. 1888 was the 10th child, Elmer b. 1883 was the 8th child. Mary b. 1872 was the 2nd child, Dave is the father b. 1850, Walter was the 11th child b. 1890, Delana is the mother b. 1854, and John is the eldest child b. 1869.

Not shown also is Alva who lived from 1885 to 1909. My belief is his death was likely the inspiration for this family photo. Robert Walter was driving a buggy through a creek, and the buggy overturned, throwing “the boys” out. Alva, trying to help the horse out, stepped into a deep hole and was drowned and not found until the following day.

Note that in the front row we have the eldest daughter sitting beside her father, the eldest boy sitting beside the mother, and Walter, the youngest, who was with Alva when he drowned, in the center between his parents.

Daniel and Catherine Brewer reconstruction

Daniel Levi BREWER was born 25 September 1823 in Mercer Co. KY, the 8th of 9 children, and the last of 4 sons born to Daniel A. BREWER Sr. of KY and Nancy SMITH. Nancy was 28 and Daniel Sr. was 29 when Daniel Levi was born.

Daniel married Catherine HEDDEN on 30 March 1843 in KY. Catherine was a daughter of William HEDDEN and Rachel VAN CLEAVE . She was about 21 and he about 22. Their first child, Sarah Elizabeth, was born within the first year, on December 22, 1843. They would have apparently 9 children altogether, born between 1843 and 1858.

There is purportedly a Kentucky marriage document for Daniel BREWER and Catherine HEDDEN. Nancy Benton, to whom a good bit of family information was passed along, mentions it as a supporting document, and the first 4 children are given as born in KY in the family history. However, Daniel A. BREWER appears in the 1840 Johnson County IN census. A Daniel BREWER is in the 1850 Putnam County IN census, and then in the 1860 Putnam Co. IN census, Daniel BREWER gives all his children as having been born in Indiana.

The family history reports the family went to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas, shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. This is also reportedly how Robert Harrington JOHNSON, grandfather of Delana FOWLER, wife of Daniel’s son David Nathaniel, died. I have wondered, as well as has Nancy Benton, if the death of Robert Harrington JOHNSON became somehow mixed up with Daniel Levi. No family history however was had on Delana’s grandparents, the genealogy originally ending with her mother, Mary Jane JOHNSON.

There is also confusion on where Daniel Levi died. He has also been given as dying in Fillmore Indiana.

Osage Mission was on land that wasn’t ceded over until 1865, and the ceding not proclaimed until 1867, but in anticipation of this a number of settlers had already moved in. 88 people resided there in 1860 and over 10,000 by 1870.

Following are the children of Daniel and Catherine:

  1. Sarah Elizabeth, b. 22 Dec. 1843, d. 22 Oct. 1881 at about 38. She married twice. Her first marriage was 1867 to Elias WHITE, b. 1809 or 1791, d. 1873. They had three children: Perry Morgan WHITE, 21 April 1869 – Feb 1944; Minnie Catherine WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 1937; Minta WHITE, 12 Jan 1872 – 24 Jan 1872. Sarah Elizabeth married (2) George W. FLING on 1 Jan 1874.
  2. William H., b. 18 Nov. 1845.
  3. Nancy, b. 11 Nov. 1847.
  4. James Daniel, b. 13 April 1849, KY to 18 July 1916, Niotaze, KS. He married, on 16 Sept. 1867, at Catholic Mission, Neosho, Kansas, Amanda ULHMAN (also given as Maude Mary OULMAN). He married (2), on 26 April 1887, Sedan KS, Anna Dora LIAFE.Notes for James Daniel Brewer:

Served in Union Army during Civil War. Worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a
carpenter and helped build the first depot at Kansas City, Kansas, as well as the one at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He met a girl named “A Maude Mary An Oulman” living in Missouri. She was an orphan living with relatives. The family did not want her to marry James so she was placed in a Catholic convent somewhere in Missouri. She was unhappy there, and James stole her away and they went to Kansas City to be married.

They later moved to Niotaze, Kansas and purchased 80 acres. They also had a general store there. He took a partner who ran the store while he continued to do carpenter work for the railroad. Built the depots at Sedan and Caney, Kansas. His partner absconded with $10,000 leaving James holding the bag of debts.

In 1884 he married Anna Dora who was 19 years younger than he. They moved into OK Territory and he built depots at Shawnee and Meeker, OK. When the land was opened for settlement he drove a buggy with his son, Daniel, and a friend, Charlie Brown, into Lincoln County and homesteaded.

The 1880 Chautauqua Sedan Township census shows James D. BREWER as 31 b. IN, parents b. KY, his wife, Amanda is 28 b. IN, her father from Hesse Cassel and mother from KY. Children are all born in KS: Elizabeth 11, Daniel 8, Edward 4, Atwill 1.

  5. David Nathaniel, b. 31 Oct. 1850 in IN, married Delana FOWLER. My family’s direct line.
  6. Rachel Jane, b. 6 Oct. 1852 in IN, d. 26 Sept. 1927 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and is buried in Niotaze. She married, 289 August 1866, Atwill (Atwell) HENDERSON b. 28 August 1844 at Beaufort Co. NC.
  7. Brewer b. 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, died 3 Oct. 1854, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN.
  8. Matilda C., b. 31 Jan. 1856, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN., died 14 July 1873 at Niotaze, Chautauqua Co. KS and was buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery “3-4 miles north of the original home place” (Ed HENDERSON). She married, 19 Feb. 1869 at Neosho Co. KS, Russell HENDERSON, b. 26 May 1846, Beaufort Co., or Wake Co. NC. He died 8 May 1921 at Niotaze and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze. Russell married (2) Harriet RECARD b. IN; he married (3) Jennie. See Rachel for more information on the HENDERSON family. Matilda’s family had the oral history that she was Cherokee but I’ve not found anything to confirm this.
  9. Brewer, b. 13 Jan 1858, Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, and died 13 Jan 1858 at same.

William G. Cutler’s “History of the State of Kansas” relates the
following on Osage Mission:

Previous to the organization of a town company or the laying out of a town site two buildings had been erected here, one by L. P. Foster & Co., a log one, in which a store was opened and managed by the “Morgan boys,” and a framebuilding erected by S. A. Williams, of Fort Scott, in which his son, Augustus D. Williams, kept a store. The movements were made in 1866, in anticipation of the starting of a town. A Town Company was organized consisting of George A. Crawford, S. A. Williams, C. W. Blair, Benjamin McDonald and John Nandier, a town site laid out and called Osage Mission., in December, 1867. By the side of it and to the west another town site was laid out and called Catholic Mission. On this town site a small store was opened by S. J. Gilmore, in a log building known then and still remembered as “Castle Thunder;” this store was opened in 1865. On Osage Mission townsite the Town Company erected a building on the corner of County and Market streets into which A. D. Williams moved his stock of goods in 1867, in which he kept the postoffice, with C. H. Howard as deputy. About the same time L. P. Foster & Co., erected a two story frame building across the street and a little north of the present site of the Southern Hotel. Joseph Roycroft built a log saloon near where now stands the City Bank; Middaugh and Dohnan came down from Topeka, and built a store where L. Steadman’s store now stands, in 1867; James Roycroft erected a boarding house, the first in town, on the southeast corner of County and Market Streets, and during the summer John Nandier built the first hotel, the Neosho House, a large two story frame, long known as the finest hotel building in Southern Kansas. Not long after this Nathaniel Tucker started a store near “Castle Thunder,” in the building now occupied as a dwelling by Daniel Zehner, and about the same time, perhaps a short time previously, Dr. J. B. Lamb started a store also in Catholic Mission. Marston & Ulmer, from Iowa, opened a furniture store in 1868. J. M. Boyle, from Fort Scott, opened a hardware store just north of L. P. Foster & Co.’s store, and on the southwest corner of County and Main streets, Ryan & Roycroft started a general store about the same time.

The first lawyer in the town was C. F. Hutchings, in 1867, the first physician, Dr. A. F. Neely, about the same time, and the first Protestant minister was Rev. A. Hitchcock. The first birth was that of a son to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Noble, 1868. From the first the growth of the town was vigorous and rapid. In August, 1868, it contained eight dry goods stores, three drug stores, one hardware store, two boot and shoe stores, four blacksmith shops, and numerous other business establishments, and a population of nearly nine hundred. From this time until the building of the railroad the growth of the town was steady. It was the center of three lines of stages; one to Fort Scott, one to Humboldt and the other to Chetopa. When these stages arrived all was life and animation. Each stage was a Concord coach drawn by four fine large horses, and the driver’s voice and importance, and the crack of his whip served to raise the excitement to the highest pitch, and is still vividly remembered. A more complete history of the town will be seen in the sketches of its individual industries and institutions…

…The first school in Osage Mission was the Mission School, begun by Father Schoenmakers in 1847. This, however, was an institution devoted to the education of Indians and in the interests of the Catholic Church.

23. Death: 1868 Apr 20.
There is some uncertainty as to place of Daniel Levi Brewer’s death. In a family sheet Nancy Benton was given, Daniel was given as dying in Filmore IN.

“Why, if he had moved to IL and then to KS? Did he go back for some reason and die there and Catherine and the kids stayed in KS? Also, the story mother told about him being killed when the oxen ran off–did she possibly have the grandfathers mixed up? According to the story in the McClean County, IL, history, that is how Robert Johnson, grandfather of Delana died. It seems strange that both of them would have died the same way.”

Catherine (Hedden) TILLEY, sister of Gilbert Hedden (Catherine Hedden BREWER’s grandfather) died 1861 in Putnam Co. IN and sister Susannah also died in Putnam Co. IN in 1885. Sister Mary died in Hendricks Co IN in 1885, and Ann died in Hendricks Co. IN in 1833.

Another sibling, Samuel, married Ruth GRIFFIN, and they had a son John who married Ann TILLEY. Their son, John was born 12 June 1846 in Putnam County IN. This Ann TILLEY appears to have been the daughter of Catherine (Hedden TILLEY and Lazarus TILLEY.

So there was a migration of the HEDDEN family in general, and associated families, to INDIANA.

Married in Kentucky. Lived in Indiana at one time. Moved to Bloomington, ILL. Came to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas shortly after the Civil War. A yoke of oxen ran off with him and he was killed. Of German descent. (Pansy Bryant, granddaughter)

General Notes: Wife –
================================================================================

Catherine was born 21 Feb 1822 in Kentucky. She married Daniel Levi Brewer at about the age of 21, 30 March 1843, in Kentucky. They had 9 children between 1843 and 1858. They were on the 1850 and 1860 Putnam Co. census and relocated to Neosho Co., KS sometime before Daniel Levi Brewer died in 1868. After Daniel’s death, Catherine married John FOSTER in Neosho Co. KS in 1869. She died 25 May 1903 in Greenfield Missouri at the age of about 81.

Catherine’s mother was Rachel VAN CLEAVE. The VAN CLEAVE name appears repeatedly in these families. Charity, a sister of Daniel Levi BREWER, married Jesse VAN CLEAVE. James HEDDEN, Catherine’s grandfather’s brother, married Katherine VAN CLEAVE.

David Nathaniel Brewer and Delana Louise Fowler

Delana and David Nathaniel touched up

Delana and David Nathaniel orig

I don’t recollect seeing very often early images clearly showing a woman as pregnant. The photo , courtesy of Nancy Benton, would have likely been taken in Barton County, Missouri.

David Nathaniel Brewer arrived in Barton County, Missouri before the establishment of Liberal in the early 1880s. Nancy Benton writes of David and Delana:

David was born in Putnam County, Indiana. He married Delana Fowler in Neosho, Kansas in 1869. They moved to Liberal, MO, in 1872 where they were active in the Methodist Church. His daughter, Bettie, is supposed to have been the first child baptized in the church. In 1895 they moved to Dade Co., MO. In 1902 he purchased an acreage south of Greenfield, MO, which he sold to his son Alva in 1906. In June, 1906 he purchased Lots 18, 19 and 20 in Block 1 in Pilgrim. His will divided his land between his children Mary Catherine Spurling, Jessie Jones, Walter Brewer, Elizabeth Jane Noyes, Lewis Brewer, John David Brewer, and Daniel Brewer. His son Walter was administrator and turned in a sale bill totaling $341.33.

Delana was born in Bloomington, ILL. At the age of 9 she moved with her parents to Osage Mission, Kansas, where she met and married David in 1869. After David died, she lived with her children. I remember her as a very tiny old lady.

David BREWER was born to Daniel Levi BREWER (of Mercer Co. KY) and Catherine HEDDEN (also of KY) on Oct 31 1850 in Putnam Co. IN . He died the 29th of August 1921 in Greenfield, Dade Co. MO.

David was the 5th of apparently 9 children, and the 4th son. Daniel was about 27 and Catherine about 28 when he was born.

When he was young, the family moved to Bloomington, Mclean Co. IL, where David’s future wife, Delana FOWLER, was born, 12 Sept. 1854, to John B. FOWLER and Mary Jane JOHNSON .

Shortly after the Civil War, the families moved to Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas, where David’s father, Daniel Levi Brewer, died 1868 April 20.

Delana FOWLER and David BREWER were married in Neosho, Kansas, 1 March 1869.

Their children:

    1. John David Brewer b. 1869 Dec 10 at the Osage Mission, Neosho, Kansas, died 1943 Feb 26 in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri, married in 1889 to Eva Hall, b. 1879 Aug in Missouri. They had 12 children.
    2. Mary Catherine Brewer b. 1872 Jan 10 in St. Paul, Kansas, died 1957 December 12 at Liberal, Missouri and was buried in the Englevale Cemetery in Englevale, Kansas. She married 1st George Spurling, then before 1939 a Rhodes (unknown), then Robert Lincoln Trent who was born 1878 April 5 in Galesburg, Kansas and died 1958 Feb 10 in Liberal, Missouri. (Thanks to Barbara Krogh for this information on Mary Catherine and Robert Trent. Her information is drawn from their death certificates and had differed from mine and so I’ve updated the information here. She also has Robert buried at Forest Chapel Cemetery as opposed to Carr’s Chapel Cemetery, which was the information I’d had.) Carr’s Chapel Cemetery in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. His sister Rose married Daniel Brewer.
    3. Daniel Brewer b. 1874 Jan 13 in Barton County, Missouri, died 1939 Jan 1 at Greenfield, Dade, Missouri, was buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. He married Rose E. Trent b. 1878 in Kansas, died 1948 and was buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery at Greenfield, Dade, Missouri.
    4. James William Brewer was born 1876 Jan 5 and died 1876 Aug 25.
    5. Elizabeth Jane “Bettie” Brewer was born 1877 July 22 in Barton County, Missouri. She died 1963 July 9 and was buried at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal, Missouri. She married Ray Noyes. This family is written of elsewhere in this blog.
    6. Lewis Brewer was born 1880 May 19 in Barton County, Missouri and died 1932 May 19 in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. 1902 July 4 at Everton, Dade, Missouri he married Pearl Eva Jones b. 1885 May 5 at Everton, Dade, Missouri, died 1966 May 10.
    7. Lois Brewer was born 1880 May 19 at Barton County, Missouri and died 1881 January at Barton County, Missouri.
    8. Elmer Brewer was born 1883 Dec 25 and died 1919 May 1 at Greenfield Dade, Missouri. He is buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery, Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. He married Rosa Bell Jones, born 1885 July 25, died 1939 May 13. She was the daughter of Jim Jones and Lucy Coble.
    9. Alva Brewer was born 1885 Aug 10 at Barton County, Missouri and died 1909 May 24. He was buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri.
    10. Jessie Brewer was born 1888 Jan 10 at Barton County, Missouri and died in June 22, 1981 at Yakima City, Yakima County, Washington. She married about 1905 in Everton, Dade, Missouri to Levy Jones who was born 1883 December 28 and died 1952 December 28 in Yakima City. Both are buried at Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. They had 3 children. (1) Herman C. Jones b. 1906 September 22, died 1977 March 9 in Yakima. (2) Herbert Leo Jones b. 1910 October 28, died 1989 March 7 at Yakima, married 1947 August 27 at Selah to Edna Lambeth who was born 1919 March 1. She died 2006 October 10 and was buried at West Hills Memorial Park in Yakima. They had no children of their own. (3) Burton Jones b. abt. 1917, died 1975 Nov 6 in Yakima. (Thanks to Barbara Krogh for this information on the family of Jessie and Levy.)
    11. Robert Walter Brewer was born 1890 Nov 15 and died 1969 in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri. He is buried at Carr’s Chapel Cemetery, Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. He married Edith S. Gilmore who was born about 1894 in Missouri.

Alva’s death was an accidental drowning in a swollen creek.

Ed Henderson notes,

These are a couple of letters from Rachel Jane Henderson to her niece, Mrs. Elmer (Mary Elizabeth Brewer) Porcupile, after the tragic death of her son, Nova Windom Henderson who died May 2, 1909 and a letter about the death of one of her brother Dave Brewer’s son’s (Alva). From “Six Generations of Brewers” by; Norma L. Roberts, 1976. Transcribed January 13, 2001 by Ed Henderson.

“May the 30, 09 Dear Neice
I will drop you a few lines this moring oh it is so lonsome to be hear by my self oh how I miss my poore boy he was all way in the house with me it seams as if every thing is gon. my hops ar all blasted this world is a sad world for me windom sayd de had not lived rightr but if he had lisened to his mother he would of been all right he spok of people joying church. as bad sick as he was & I told him if he wanted to joyn church it was all righ he culd he sayd he felt as if he was all right & was ready to go but he hated to leave me. oh you know my heart was breaking to hear him talk so for all I knew he culd not live if he did not mend soon.”

Alva died on May 24 1909. Following is the letter concerning his death.

“Dear Neice
I got a letter from Dave & they had the sad neuse of Alvaus death last monda him & walter drove in the crick & dide not know it was up & thair! bugie turned over & threw the boys out & alva thoug his team was not going to get out so he started to help the hourse out & steped offf in a dep whole & dround & they never found him untill the next day noon oh how sad it was for me to read that letter it broat every thing so frech to my minde oh how quick the poore boy was taking a way alva was such a good boy it is sade.”

Jessie and her husband, Levy JONES, are given as having resided in Yakima, Washington. Photos exist of Bettie Brewer NOYES visiting her sister, Jessie, there in Washington in later years. It would appear that Jessie and Levy didn’t move to Washington until after 1930 as they are still in the Dade Co., Missouri census in 1930. She was known to be living in Selah, Yakima Co., Washington at the time of her mother’s death, as evidenced in her mother’s obituary. She is not mentioned in the obituary of Bettie Brewer NOYES and so had perhaps deceased by then.

Jessie’s sibling, Lewis, married Pearl JONES.

Nancy notes on Walter,

Walter and his family lived near Oscaloosa, Missouri, when I was growing up. They moved to Joplin sometime during the 1940’s. Walter was a some-time preacher.

Delana’s father died 1883 in Greenfield.

I have yet to locate the family in the 1900 census.

In 1902, David purchased acreage south of Greenfield, Missouri, which he sold to his son, Alva, in 1906. Nancy Benton furnishes the paper which I’ll post in another blog.

Dela’s mother died 1902 in Greenfield. David’s mother died in 1903 in Greenfield.

Nancy Benton writes that in 1906, David purchased, at Pilgrim, Dade, Missouri, Lots 18, 19 and 20 in Block 1.

I’ve a letter dated 1907 July 25 that David wrote to Jim Brewer, that was sent in care of Rachel Jane Henderson, their sister, who was living in Chautauqua County. I’ll post this in another blog.

Their place in the 1910 census is yet to be found.

In 1920 they were in Polk, Dade, Missouri.

Will of David Nathaniel Brewer

The will of David Nathaniel Brewer divided his land between children, Mary Katherine Spurling, Jessie Jones, Walter Brewer, Elizabeth Jane Noyes, Lewis Brewer, John David Brewer. His son Walter was administrator and turned in a sale bill totaling $341.33.

I don’t see Daniel Brewer listed. Perhaps a part of the document is cut off? I don’t know. Daniel Brewer was mentioned in the Bill of Sale.

David Nathaniel Brewer b. 1850 in Pleasant, Steuben, Indiana, died 1921 Aug 29 in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri, married Delana L. Jane Fowler b. 1854 in Bloomington, McLean, Illinois, died 1939 Nov 4, Oscaloosa, Dade, Missouri (I write of this family in a primary post elsewhere). Their daughter, Elizabeth Jane “Bettie” Brewer married Ray Noyes on 1895 May 24 at Liberal, Barton, Missouri.

Thanks to Nancy Benton for the document.
