Thomas STRICKLAND, father of Thomas b. 1802 who married Elizabeth Shock, is believed to the Thomas who appears in the 1790 NC Sampson Co. census beside Samuel STRICKLAND Jr. However, there is a Thomas STRICKLAND who appears in court records in Sampson Co. NC during the time Thomas is in TN, so the link isn’t firm. However, Joseph SLOKUM (SLOCUM) was living next door to Thomas STRICKLAND in NC. and Thomas STRICKLAND married Zilpha, daughter of Joseph SLOCUM.
The 1819 court minutes for Sampson County have two entries concerning a deceased Thomas Strickland Sr., whose widow was Mary.
“Family tradition said he (Thomas STRICKLAND Jr.) came from TN and census list birth place as TN. Written recollection from grandchildren of age to know first hand have named his Mother as Zelpha Slocum. The History of Slocum, Slocumbs of America book coming from the other direction said unnamed daughter of Joseph Slocumb married Thomas Strickland. Census NC 1790 show Thomas Strickland and Joseph Slokum to be very close neighbors.”
Judy Berndt 2001 June 23 email
“Thomas Strickland and siblings of Zelpha along with Joseph Slocumb are together on record of sale of ‘Negroes’ to? THORNTON.”
Judy Berndt 2001 June 23 email“1796 Bill of sale Joseph Slocumb Sr, Joseph Slocumb Jr, Thomas Strickland, Linday Slocum, and Diley (Riely) Slocumb for two Negroes named Nat and Rachel.
WIT: Nathaniel Thorton, Noah smith and John Ward.”
Thomas Strickland’s granddaughter, Millie Ann, would marry a Crockett. CROCKETT and STRICKLAND connections began early on:
“Crockett connections start there when Zeplha’s brother Riley Slocum married Nancy Crockett the widow POTTS. BRASHEAR connections probably began prior to Mo.”
Judy Berndt 2001 June 23 email“A Crockett gives the birth date of Thomas Stricklin (Jr) as well as his death date. I qualify this as an I witness account and as evidence is greater than the lady who’s reference you use who got the info from the county history book. Also, descendant of Zelpha Stricklin, Louise Stabler herself gave me what was in their family Bible. That is creditable evidence. She is still living in Wichita Kansas and grew up with my Mother. She was the one who started me on this adventure.”

Zilpha SLOCUM STRICKLAND administered Thomas’ estate sale 1804 in Williamson Co.TN.
Judy Berndt notes: “There was an Enoch BATEMAN who attended estate sale for my Thomas Strickland …others who attended were as follows: Barnabus Peet, Isaac Crow, Nathan Garner, John Garner, Britton Garner, John Blackman, John Patton, John Johnston, Joseph SLOCUM, Richard Orton, Thomas West? and Abraham Whatin?.”
A land record of 1772 from Duplin County exists between a Samuel Strickland and Thomas Strickland:

As can be seen, a John Thornton lives near the Stricklands. In 1815 a Thomas Strickland Sr. sold land to Thomas Thornton in Sampson County. By 1819 Thomas Strickland Sr., who was married to a Mary, was deceased. So we’re working with multiple Thomas Stricklands here and it’s going to be difficult to sort things out. We do have, however, Joseph Slocum, father of Zilpha who married our Thomas, living also a few households away.

1784 to 1786 NC DUPLIN/SAMPSON CO. CENSUS has a SLOCUMB and a STRICKLAND:
SLOCUMB John C. 1-1-3 Kenan’s
STRICKLIN Absalom 1-2-2 Gillespie’s
By 1800, Joseph Slocum is no longer in Sampson County, NC, but a Thomas Strickland and Samuel (given as Strickling) still are and are living near Thomas Thornton:

The Thomas Stricklin in 1790 and 1800 Sampson, North Carolina could well be Thomas Jasper Strickland, given as born 1722 Sep 10 in Connecticut, who died 1817 Dec 13 in Duplin county and was married to a Mary Turner abt 1749. As Joseph Slocum was living nearby in 1790, one would imagine however that our Thomas belongs to one of these Strickland families.
In other words, I know very little about this family, as does (I think) anyone, and am myself at a dead end with it.
