Nancy Benton’s Brewer Genealogy (compiled from a variety of sources and
original documents) gives John B. FOWLER as dying 1883 in Dade County.
However, in Delana Fowler Brewer’s obituaries her family is recorded as
moving to Dade County from Barton in 1895. Unless I have missed
something, I don’t observe a record of John B. FOWLER being buried in the
Carr’s Chapel Cemetery in Dade county where his wife and many other
members of the family are buried.

3. DAVID FOWLER OBITUARY
Unknown paper. Source: Lee Weller

DAVID FOWLER died at his home one mile south and half a mile east of
Savonburg, August 27th 1906 [Savonburg, KS is between Stark in Neosho Co.
and Elsmore in Allen Co on the MKT railroad line.] He was born in Stokes
County, North Carolina, June 9th 1831. On the day of his death he was 75
years, 2 months and 27 days old. The funeral service was held at the
residence on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock conducted by Rev. L. J.
Gillham, pastor of the M. E. church of Savonburg, and his remains were
laid to rest in the Erie Cemetary. He moved from North Carolina to
Illinois and came to Kansas in 1867, thirty-nine years ago. He settled on
a tract of land in Neosho County, now known as the Fluber farm. He sold
this farm and bought R. G. Craven’s farm six miles north of Walnut, later
bought a farm near Savonburg where he lived till he died. He leaves his
companion, four children, three brothers, two sisters, nine
grandchildren, and kindred and many friends to mourn his death. His
children are Mrs. Laura Hedges, Walnut Kansas, James D. Fowler, Stark
Kansas, John W. Fowler, Rialto, California, Mrs. E. Smith, Odense,
Kansas, Gideon Fowler [brother], Kansas City, and his sisters Mrs.
Rebecca Kelso, Havana Kansas and Mrs. Lousetta Dillon, Bloomington, Ill.
Early in his life he united with the Christian Church, but later, in
1872, he joined the M. E. Church. He has lived in the country surrounding
Walnut for thirty-nine years. His life was linked with every enterprise.
He was a hardy pioneer ahd helped to turn the virgin soil, plant trees,
build homes, schoolhouses, and churches, and has lived to see this part
of the state develop into a rich and fertile country. He was beloved and
respected by all who knew him. The aged pilgrim has laid down his staff.
His companion, his daughters Laura and Etta and his son James were at his
bedside. The clock on the mantle shelf struck eleven. The sun shining
bright and clear. He had said farewell, his last farewell to his loved
ones, his eyes grew dim, his throbbing pulse ceased and his soul left the
body and started all alone on a long journey which has no homecoming in
this life. Its destination was to that far off country beyond the sun,
moon and stars and the sorrows of earth, where time will not wrinkle his
face or shrivel his hands, and whiten his locks. Blessed land of
immortality!”

6. ALFRED FOWLER OBITUARY
Unknown paper. Source: Lee Weller

“Alfred N. Fowler was born in Stokes County, North Carolina, January 31,
1833, and died at the home of his son O. F. Fowler, in Sedalia, Mo., July
5, 1912, aged 79 years, 5 months and five days.

The deceased moved to Illinois with his parents in 1851. In 1859, he was
married to Miss Sarah Lee. To this union were born three children, one
being dead. The two living are Web Fowler, who resides somewhere in the
West, and O. F. Fowler, who resides at Sedalia, Mo.

He was the son of William Fowler, and of a family of seven sons and three
daughters, all being now dead except his brother Robert who resides in
this city and a sister, Mrs. Lusetta Dillon of Bloomington Ill.

The father, mother and all the children and their families came to Kansas
in 1866 and located on farms between Walnut and St. Paul, but most of
them near St. Paul. In 1879 the deceased moved to St. Paul where he
became the manager and buyer for the Benedict Elevator Company, in which
capacity he remained for many years. In the fall of 1875 he was sent to
Walnut to buy grain for his company and the next spring he moved his
family here where continued the Fowler home until the death of his wife
July 21, 1907. Since that time he has made his home with his son in
Sedalia. This was a devoted husband and wife and it was hard to see their
home broken up by the cruel reaper of death. The deceased was stricken
with paralysis last November from which he never fully recovered and
twenty-four hours previous to his death he received a second attack from
which he never recovered.

The remains arrived here from Sedalia over the M. K. & T. at 3:10
Saturday afternoon and were taken direct to the cemetary where they were
laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Walnut cemetary.

The deceased was a good man and a pioneer of this community. He endured
the hardships of pioneer life, and it was nice to see that in his last
days he could be so tenderly cared for in the home of his son. This
should be a high privilege for any son or daughter to be so situated as
to care for a parent in their declining days, for it is always evident
that the parents care for their child when the child can not care for
itself.

Mr. [O. F.] Fowler and wife and son Lee, who is contracting agent for the
M. K. & T. in Texas, accompanied the remains to this city and in the
evening they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Fowler, returning to
their home in Sedalia on the Flyer Saturday night.”

On 6 April 1824, in Stokes Co., NC, he married Elizabeth WESTMORELAND, daughter
of David S. WESTMORELAND and Rebecca BYNUM. The bondsman was a Marshal FOWLER
(not his brother, who was younger than he), witnessed by Matt M. MOORE.

Elizabeth was born 11 May 1808 in Stokes County., NC.

William’s brother, Marshall, also married Elizabeth WESTMORELAND’s sister,
Sally Sarah.

William died of dropsy 26 Dec. 1877 in Neosho Co. KS. Elizabeth died May 8 1893
in Neosho Co. KS. Her tombstone in the Fowler Cemeter says she died at 84 yr,
11 mo. 28 days.

William and Elizabeth moved from NC to McLean Co. IL in the year 1853 according
to some sources, but John B. had to have been married to Mary Jane JOHNSON in
Illinois before 1853. Alfred FOWLER’s obituary gives the family as moving to
Illinois in 1851, so perhaps the family was already in Illinois and made the
move to McLean Co. in 1853. They then moved to Walnut, KS in 1867.

William donated land for the Fowler Cemetery in Erie KS. (GNIS: Fowler Cemetery

Notes of Pearl Fowler Stewart, cousin to Anna Mary Hedges Weller, provided by
Lee Weller state:

“WILLIAM FOWLER of Stokes County, North Carolina, married Elizabeth L.
Westmoreland, April 6, 1824. In about 1853 they moved to McLean County,
Illinois, where they lived until October of 1866, when they came to Kansas,
settling near Osage Mission, now St. Paul [Neosho Co.], Kansas. They gave a
corner of their farm, about four miles south and west of Walnut for a cemetery.
It was called the Fowler cemetery. They and several of the other Fowlers are
buried there. During Elizabeth Westmoreland Fowler’s later years she made her
home with her son Robert W. Fowler and his family. The old family Bible records
the birth of a David Westmoreland on March 1st 1775, which I presume was her
father.”
