Foreword

The history of Liberal, Missouri, stands in a class to itself. Few towns in the United States received a wider advertising than Liberal received in its early years. This was due to the peculiar circumstances under which the town was founded. These very singular conditions gave some interesting phases to the town’s history. It has been thought desirable to preserve in permanent form the story of the most important events in the history of the town. Hence this sketch. The author hereby extends his thanks to all those who furnished the information, without which this sketch would have been impossible.
