Henry Shock (1740-1818) and Sarah Elizabeth Holtzapfel (1751-1818)

Henry SHOCK was born abt. 1740-42 in Germany and, according to “Pioneer Families of Missouri”, emigrated to Pennsylvania then Greenbriar County, Virginia.

Henry died at about the age of 78, 7 Feb 1818, at Twistville, Braxton County, West Virgnia (formed in 1836 from Kanawha, Lewis, Nicholas and Randolph Counties, and was called Nicholas County at the time) or Greenbriar Co. WV.

Henry married Sarah Elizabeth HOLTZAPFEL, daughter of Erasmus Holtzapfel and Christina Ruscher, in 1768 at York, PA when she was about 17 and he was about 28 or 30. Sarah was born 5 Apri 1751 at York PA and died after 1818 in West Virginia.

They had 7 children born between 1769 and 1800, which means their last child, Regina, was born when Sarah was about 49. The first four are given as born in Virginia, up to 1789. Beginning with Sally in 1795 the children are given as born in West Virginia.

2) John b. 1771 at Shanandoah, Page Co. VA m. Mary “Polly” SHEELY at Fayette Co. KY. After her death he married Mary Bealor.
3) Elizabeth b. 1788 at Shenandoah Co. VA m. Benjamin DUFFIELD b. 1772 Augusta, VA. They both died at Peoria Co. IL.
4) Jacob b. 1789 at White Sulphur Springs, Greenbriar Co. WV, m.1810 in Lewis Co. VA, to Mary GREENE b. 1782 in KY.
5) Sarah b. 1795 at Greenbriar Co. WV m. David HEATON.
6) Christine b. 1797 at Greenbriar Co. WV m. 1813 to Andrew BOGGS.
7) Regina b. 1800 at Greenbriar Co. WV m. John GREENE.

A Henry SHOCK appears in a 1783 VA Early Census Census Index in Shenandoah Co. pg 65, tax list.

A Henry SHOCK appears in the 1790 Federal Census in Philadelphia Co. PA, Township Oxford, Roll, M637_9 and again in the 1800 Federal Census in Philadelphia Co. PA, unknown township, page 367. But our Henry SHOCK was already in Greenbriar WV at that time.

“Henry SHOCK of Germany, emigrated to America and settled first in Pennsylvania, from whence he removed to Greenbriar Co. VA. His children were–Henry, John, Jacob, Rayner, Christina and Sally. John married Polly SHILLEY, and they had–Milley, David, Henry, Hector P. L., Eliza, Polly, William, Rebecca, Peggy and Sarah. Mr. Shock settled in Boone Co., MO in 1906, and built a horse-mill. His son Henry was married fist to Mary JACKSON, and second to Hannah L. COX, and by his two wives he had sixteen children. He settled in Audrain County in 1831, and bought out Richard WILLINGHAM, “stock, lock and barrel” for $80. He afterward purchased the property of Colonel Robert FULKERSON, whose land adjoined his, and the latter removed to Montgomery County. Mr. Shock is called the “fat man” of Audrain County and we give his portrait on page 228. David Shock married Cynthia GIBSON of Boone County. Hector P. L. married Sarah A. JACKSON, and settled in Bates County, where he died. Eliza married Thomas STRICKLAND, the first stage contractor on the Booneslick Road. Polly married William BREWER. William married the widow EVANS. Margaret married Perry COX. Sarah A. married Milton BLYTHE. Richard died in childhood.”
