C. CHAPMAN &#038; CO.,<br \/>\n1881. <\/p>\n<p>There have been several newspaper publications in the lower town. The &#8220;Signal of Liberty, an anti-slavery organ, was published by the Rev. Guy Beckley and a Mr. Foster, on the east side of Broadway. At an office or offices on the other side we had &#8221; The Gem of Science,&#8221; published by San ford &#038; Sanford, also a weekly ; &#8220;The Primitive Expounder,&#8221; a semi-monthly, by Thornton &#038; Billings, two Universalist ministers; &#8220;The Alphadelphie Tocsin,&#8221; published in the interest of the Alphadelphian Association, located in Kalamazoo. Besides these there was the &#8221; Native American,&#8221; a political paper; the &#8220;Young -Yankee,&#8221; devoted to light reading and amusement; &#8220;The Corrector,&#8221; instituted to make crooked people walk straight, an organ much needed even at the present day.
