Asher Atwell and Charlotte Thornton<\/h2>\n

Asher E. Atwell, the brother of the author’s ancestor, Hiram Atwell, was born Nov 10 1816 in Johnson, Lamoille, Vermont, and died 1900. On Oct 29 1854 he married Charlotte Thornton, born April 11 1832 at Peru, Clinton, New York, and died March 27 1888 at Johnson, Lamoille, Vermont.<\/p>\n

Asher and Charlotte had 8 children born between 1855 and 1878: Mary S., Arvilla, Lowella, George, Luna, Willie, Charlotte and Lucy. <\/p>\n

Asher Atwell was a son of Nathaniel Atwell and Lydia Hunkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is an unidentified photo from the possessions of Caroline Atwell
\n Noyes. It is possibly a photo of Asher Atwell in younger days, but there
\n is no positve identification. The photo was taken at R.M. McIntosh in
\n Northfield, VT. R. M. McIntosh is in the 1887-1888 Montpelier, Barre,
\n Waterbury And Northfield Directory but the studio also produced Civil War
\n photographs so was around in the 1860s.<\/p>\n

Asher E. Atwell died at the age of 84. He had survived his wife,
\n Charlotte, two years. I am giving him as having deceased in Johnson,
\n Lamoille Co., as that is where he had lived most of his life and is where
\n his wife died.<\/p>\n

From Greg Chase, a descendant of Asher (2003 April email):<\/p>\n

As per your documentation Hiram moved to Waterbury, VT. This is about 21
\nmiles from his home town, Johnson. According to the 1850 Johnson, Vt. census,
\nAsher (33) was living with his brother John and were farmers. James and Lucy
\nAtwell lived nearby and were farmers. The 1860 census of Johnson lists Asher
\nand Charlotte and three children as owning their own farm with a value of
\n$2,000. James (brother) and Lucy lived next door to them. The 1870 census has
\nthem living in Cambridge, VT as farmers. The 1880 census (Johnson) states that
\nAsher, now 62, was a servant and farm hand for a Myron Davis. Charlotte, still
\nlisted as married, was living with a Scott Lucian, a grocer and jewler. One can
\nonly speculate what had befallen them, however, we do know that Vermont farmers
\nsuffered greatly during an economic depression at that time. Many farmers lost
\ntheir land due to taxes and competative factors resulting from America’s
\nexpansion as well as foreign trade.<\/em><\/p>\n

Asher E. ATWELL made a copy of the old family bible on February 17, 1883.
\nBirth place and date, death and marriage information for Nathan, Lydia and
\nchildren is from Caroline Atwell NOYES’ copying of the Asher E. ATWELL copy
\nwhich she made March 1st 1885.
