\nThe Henderson Pioneers to Kansas<\/p>\n
Our journey begins near the mid 1840\u2019s in Beaufort County, North Carolina when
\non August 28, 1844, Atwill Henderson was given birth by his mother, Mary
\nForeman Henderson. Still yet, another birth on May 26, 1846 to their second
\nson, Russell Henderson would play a key part in the Henderson\u2019s family
\nhistory.<\/p>\n
By now, you might be asking what about their parents? Mr. Henderson whose first
\nname has long been passed down as also being Atwill Henderson married Mary
\nForeman between 1840 and 1843. When he was born, it can only be estimated to
\nhave been about 1816. Mary however, was born according to her tomb stone on
\nSeptember 11, 1817, place unknown. Nothing is really known at present, about
\neither ones past or their ancestry. At best, records have been few with only
\nverbal records past down through the generations and what remains in Atwill and
\nRachel\u2019s family Bible.<\/p>\n
Earlier it was mentioned that the birth of Russell Henderson would play a key
\nroll in the Henderson history. In the year of 1846, the United States went to
\nwar with Mexico. It was during this time Mr. Henderson left his family to serve
\nthe United States in this war. It is not clear if he even knew Russell had been
\nborn.<\/p>\n
After the Mexican War (1846-1848) their father having not returned and
\nreported, \u201cLost at Sea\u201d in the Gulf of Mexico, Mary left North Carolina with
\nher two boys, Atwill and Russell Henderson about 1849. It is thought her
\nsister, aunts and grand mother traveled with them to Indiana. They lived in
\nIndiana about 14 years. There the boys met the sisters who would become their
\nwives.<\/p>\n
In Indiana, Rachel Jane Brewer was born on October 6, 1852 then her sister
\nMatilda C. Brewer in 1856 to Daniel Brewer and his wife Catherine Hedden.<\/p>\n
At some point both families moved to Illinois where on August 21, 1866, Atwill
\nHenderson and Rachel Jane Brewer were married. Shortly there after In 1867 by
\nmeans of covered wagon and walking the Henderson\u2019s and some Brewers, grandmas
\nand all, moved to Missouri for a time then on to Neosho County, Kansas near
\nErie. On November 16, 1868, Rachel gave birth to their first child, and only
\ndaughter they named, Mary Catherine Henderson, after the grandmothers. On
\nFebruary 1, 1871, Rachel gave birth to their second child, a son and first of
\nnine boys, Jesse Alexander Henderson while still in Neosho County.<\/p>\n
Russell Henderson and Matilda C. Henderson married near Erie, Kansas on
\nFebruary 19, 1869. In December, 1869, Matilda gave birth to their first child,
\na son they named Warren Henderson.<\/p>\n
Mary, Atwill and Russell Henderson are listed on the 1870 Federal Census in
\nNeosho County, Kansas.<\/p>\n
After exploring the southeast portion of Kansas and the northeast portions of
\nOklahoma, the decision was made to move to what was then known as Howard
\ncounty. Most of the Brewer family decided to move on to Oklahoma, a few moved
\nto Missouri. On September 26, 1874, Rachel gave birth to the first of four boys
\nborn near Monett, Jasper Franklin Henderson.<\/p>\n
On March 29, 1872, Russell Henderson applied for a land patent from the United
\nStates in the Southeast Quarter Section 28, Township 33 (Washington), Range 12,
\nnear Monett, Kansas. It is believed this may have been a land grant or pension
\nMary received for her husbands loss in the Mexican War. On August 17, 1872,
\nAtwill and Rachel Henderson purchased land from Ruben and Martha A. Perry for
\nthe amount of $250 adjacent to the land Russell had applied for. In November,
\n1872, Matilda gave birth to their second child, Sarah Jane Henderson.<\/p>\n
On July 11, 1874 tragedy struck, Russell\u2019s wife Matilda died and was buried at
\nMount Vernon Cemetery, a few miles north of home.<\/p>\n
Here they raised cattle, lived out of the wagons and out of an old stone house,
\nthe crumbled remains of which still rest to this day between some oil jacks.
\nThe stone house was only about 8 foot by 10 foot. In the rainy season the creek
\nthat divided Russell\u2019s land and Atwill\u2019s would flow out of it’s banks, the
\nlands being low would be engulfed and the small house would flood. The search
\nfor better land to build upon, once again began. But that is another story.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n PALMER. Bentley THOMAS is observed in the 1850 IN, Bartholomew Co.
\n census in the household with Mary HENDERSON. He is perhaps a cousin of

\n background. He later sold that land to Atwill Henderson. Land records are

23. Atwil Henderson Family Bible: Atwill Henderson Family Bible
\n Individual Age Listing, 1896, , Chautauqua, Kansas. The Atwill Henderson
\n Family Bible Individual age listing written down by an unknown School
\n Master has been preserved by Everett Henderson, Dated March 5, 1896. An
\n interesting note is made by Ed Henderson that the Everett’s middle name
\n was added by the School Master. He thought everyone needed a middle name.
\n “So, the story goes. The ages are within the time the Family portrate was
\n taken. John Chester died a few days later on March 11, 1896 and was
\n burried near his grandmother Mary Henderson. This may be why an X is
\n marked by his name.” <\/p>\n

\n Pioneer, as certified by the Chautauqua County Genealogical and
\n Historical Society, verifing his family as Kansas Pioneers in Howard
\n county which later became Chautauqua county when the county was devided
\n in 1875. This is recorded online at the Kansas Pioneer Project at:

“Atwell Henderson was born in North Carolina, August 28, 1844, and died
\n at his home near Niotaze, Kansas, July 28, 1898. He lacked only one
\n month of being 54 years of age.<\/p>\n
“He left North Carolina at the age of five years, in company with mother,
\n sisters, brothers, grandmother and aunts, for Indiana. He remained in
\n Indiana fourteen years, and went to Illinois and lived there two years
\n then came to Kansas–to Neosho Co–in 1866. In 1871 came to Chautauqua
\n Co–thus being a resident of this county for twenty-seven years.<\/p>\n
“His father was killed in the Mexican war when Atwell was three years of
\n age. His mother lived with him until her death seven years ago. He had
\n one son who preceded him to eternity. He leaves a wife, eight sons, one
\n daughter, a brother and sister.<\/p>\n
“They were rare elements in Atwell Henderson. He had that simplicity
\n that marked the child, such as would characterize that class of which
\n Jesus said ‘except one becomes as a child he cannot enter the Kingdom of
\n Heaven.’ He always found something good to say of the people about him.
\n He was a member of the M. E. church, having joined while in Neosho Co.,
\n about thirty-two years ago.<\/p>\n
“He was interred in the cemetery southeast of Niotaze, on July 30, 1898,
\n under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of Sedan of which he was a
\n member. The Woodmen of Niotaze of which he was also a member were also
\n in attendance. The funeral discourse was given at the home by Rev. B. M.

\n his departure. He was a member of the Woodsman lodge at this place.
\n Atwell Henderson was one of our most prominent and useful citizens and
\n his death is a sad loss to this community. The sorrowing family have the
\n sympathy of the entire community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

THE VISIT<\/p>\n
“Last July during the 2000 Henderson Family Reunion, I was able to talk
\n with my Aunt Mable HENDERSON Atkinson who was in from Salt Lake City, UT.
\n She told me a story that she had heard from aunts and uncles while
\n growing up, that happened to Rachel Jane. It goes like this… One day
\n during the summer, two Indian women came by the old home place. Each was
\n carrying a baby in their packs. It was not unusual for indians on their
\n treck south to come by as there was an old indian trail near by. The
\n women came to the house where the door was open and stood outside. Rachel
\n saw them and came to the door, she offered to feed them because they
\n looked hungry. The two women instantly laid their babies just outside and
\n came in and ate. When they had finnished eating they made gestures of
\n thanks and went outside. Rachel followed them. When they picked up the
\n babies, one had died. It had apperently been very sick. The women went on
\n their way without a word.”<\/p>\n

\n Obituary – Mrs. Atwill Henderson<\/p>\n
Rachel Jane was born Oct. 6, 1851 near Terre Haute, Indiana, departed
\n this life Sept. 26, 1927, age 75 years, 11 months and 20 days.<\/p>\n
She was married to Atwill Henderson Aug. 29th, 1866. In 1867 they came
\n to Kansas and took a claim in Neosho county. In 1871 they came to
\n Chautauqua county and bought a claim near Monett. In 1822 (sic) they
\n moved to the present home two miles north of Niotaze having resided there
\n 45 years and in Chautauqua county 56 years.<\/p>\n
To the union were born ten children, four of whom survive.<\/p>\n
The husband, Atwill Henderson, preceased her (illegible) years, also six
\n children, John Chester, James Russell, Jasper Franklin, Nora Windom,
\n Ealin Austin and Mary C. Barnhart.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Henderson was a kind and devoted mother. She was highly esteemed by
\n those who knew her, for her patient, kind and contented disposition. She
\n was united with the M. E. church in early life and has lived a fiathful
\n life since.<\/p>\n
There are left to mourn her demise four sons, Jesse Alexander, William
\n David, Alva A. and Everett, all of Niotaze; 34 grandchildren and a host
\n of other relatives and friends.<\/p>\n
