John Kearns and Catherine McNulty

John and Catherine KEARNS seem to have been Irish Potato Famine Immigrants who came to America around 1850, at the tail end of the famine which lasted from 1845 to 1850 or 1852. According to the 1860 census, John was born abt. 1820 in Ireland, and Catherine was born abt. 1822.

John KEARNS married Catherine/Katherine MCNULTY in Ireland in 1848. They moved to Liverpool, then to this country through New York, then to Toulmanville, AL (a suburb of Mobile) to link up with an uncle (or cousin), Patrick MCNULTY, who lived in Toulmanville. Chase Pollman provided the information, to Jack Kearns, in December 1998, on Patrick McNulty being either a cousin or an uncle to Catherine. I don’t have other information on his research as to his conclusions concerning this, as opposed to he being perhaps a brother, nor do I have document sources on their immigration.

John became a citizen in 1855, which corroborates the 1850 immigration date as one had to have been in the country more than 5 years.

I have found the below which I had thought may show John Kearns’ naturalization.

Seeking out entry data for a John Kearns is difficult as it could be John Kearns or Kearns. I’ve not observed any entries for a possible John Kearns with Catherine on the same ship as of yet. The only seeming possible I’ve turned up, as yet, who departed from Liverpool, is below. Perhaps he had family on board who isn’t listed.

Name: Kearns, John
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Embarkation: Liverpool
Ship: Garrick
Occupation: workman/woman [sic]
Passengers: 326
Native Country: Ireland
Destination: USA
Arrival Date: 3 Mar 1851

Catherine and John had 4 children:

  • Elizabeth (Eliza) Ann KEARNS b. 12 Oct. 1854, Toulmanville, Mobile Co. AL, married Peter REYNOLDS.
  • Michael “Buddy” TEARENCE KEARNS b. abt. 1856, married Mary MCANDREWS.
  • Timothy Willes KEARNS, b. 1 March 1859, died 10 Feb. 1938, Mobile, AL., married Abbey BERNARD.
  • John Edward KEARNS, b. 1863. John is given as 7 years of age in the 1870 census. Born 1863. Nothing else of him is known after 1892.

The 1860 census records John’s age as being 39. He was a gardener and the value of his land was $1600/40. Catherine Kearns was 31. Children listed in the 1860 census were: Eliza A., age 8. Michael, age 4. Timothy, age 1. All three children were born in Alabama.

The 1860 census also recorded a Patrick MCNULTY, age 30, a gardener. His wife was Elisa McNulty, age 32. Both were from Ireland. Their daughter was Mary A. McNulty, age 8.

The 1870 census records Catherine KEARNS as 40. Children listed were: Eliza age 16, Michael age 14, Timothy age 10, and John age 7.

Catherine is given as not having told the census reporters her true age for 1870 and 1880.

The 1880 census, at the Genealogy Library in Mobile lists (Page 14, E. Dist. No. 117) Catherine as 45 and a housekeeper, Mike as 23 and a farmer, Timothy as 21 and a farmer, and John as 17 and a farmer. “Farming. Lanes West of St. Stephans Rd., Toulminville.”

The 1900 Census gives a Patrick MCNULTY, born January 1823 in Ireland. He was then 77 and living in Mobile. Other members of the family living in the same household were: John M. BATTISTE, a son-in-law, born February 1854, age 46; Mary Ann BATTISTE, daughter, born December 1852, age 48; Loretta BATTISTE, a granddaughter born September 1883, age 16; Agnes BATTISTE, a granddaughter, born April 1885, age 15; Margaret BATTISTE, a granddaughter, born October 1889, age 11; and an Olivia BATTISTE, a granddaughter, born November 1892, age 8.

In the 1900 census, Catherine (McNulty) KERNS (notice the spelling) is given as living in the household of Peter REYNOLDS. Her date of birth is given as 1823, and that she was 77 at her last birthday. Widowed. She was unable to read or write.

Peter REYNOLDS, the head of the household, was 50 and had been married 27 years to Eliza (Kearns) REYNOLDS. He is given as born in 1849, that he had lived in the states 45 years and had immigrated in 1861(?), which doesn’t add up. He is given as a gardener and was able to read and write. Eliza is given as 47 and able to read and write. The children were listed as: Mary, 18; John, 17, was an apprentice machinist; Corine, 15; Charles, 11 (“at school” it seems to read); and Edward 5. All the children could read and write.

John KEARNS served in the Civil War in Company E, 2nd Battalion, Alabama Light Artillery, as a Private/Corporal. There is no record of his death, but seems likely to have died between 1860 and 1870. There is no record he died in battle. He was wounded, however, and perhaps he later expired as a result.

C. Pollman provides this story about Catherine, which once appeared in a Mobile newspaper “about the matriarch of this fighting Irish clan.”

It was during the Civil War and Catherine lost her mule, Pigeon, to the Federal forces, who occupied Mobile in 1864, for it was standard orders to collect all animals from the surrounding captured territories. The Union Army corralled all the horse and mules at Eight Mile, some 10 miles north up St. Stephens Rd. from where Catherine lived with her children while her husband was off at war. They had established a small farm among the Irish clan in Toulminville where many Irish (including the McNulty’s, McAndrews, McDonoughs, McDonalds and the Reynolds etc.) immigrated and staked their lots as farmers and sod busters as a result of the Irish famine in the 1840’s. While John was at war, Catherine took care of the kids who all helped with the routine chores of farming–growing crops and taking their harvests to the market in downtown Mobile. In order to keep the farm functioning, Catherine needed her mule, most importantly, to pull her heavily loaded wagon of vegetables to town to sell at the market place (old City Hall).

One day Catherine walked the ten miles to Eight Mile where the Union Army was encamped. She asked the Union captain (“boldly”) who was in charge of the confiscated animals if she could have her mule so she could get her crops to market. He said yes, if she could find it (not thinking she could) in the huge stockade where the animals were kept. As the story goes, she kept calling, “Here Pigeon,” until the animal heard and came to her. The captain reluctantly allowed her to take the mule, but warned her that Union soldiers returning from an evening of liquor in town might take the mule away or shoot her and the mule. She waited until it was dark, then walked the mule back to her home off St. Stephens Rd., taking refuge in the ditch and woods whenever she heard union soldiers approaching.

Catherine McNulty KERNS died of Senile Dementia at 7 Letty (?) Hospital, 900 St. Anthony. She is also given as dying at City Hospital, her residence having been in Toulminville for 50 years.

John KEARNS and Catherine McNulty KEARNS are given as buried on the old side of the Catholic Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama, Section XL, Lot 3. The lot has no marker or stone.

The following information on the 2nd Alabama Light Artillery Battalion was taken from the Internet December 1998 (I didn’t make a record of where):

The 2nd Alabama Artillery Battalion, Companies “A”-“F”, was formed at Mobile in January 1862, with five companies later reduced to three. It was attached to the Department of the Gulf, and after January, 1864, the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The unit was stationed at or near Mobile throughout the war and participated in the conflicts at Forts Gaines and Morgan, Spanish Fort, and Fort Blakely. With 64 officers and men, it surrendered on 4 May 1865.

Field officer: Lt. Col. James H. Hallonquist.

Armaments: Co. “A”, four 6-lb. Smoothbores (between 28 Nov 1863 and 5 Jan 1864); four 12-lb. Napoleons (between 1 May 1864 and 21 Feb 1865); Co. “E”, two 3-in. Rifles and two 12-lb. Howitzers (on 6-7 April 1862); Co. “F”, four 12-lb. Napoleons (between 29 March 1864 and 16 Dec 1864)

THE CENSUSES

A newspaper article titled Last of a Coterie of Pioneer Settlers provides some history of the early Irish community formed of the McNulty, McAndrews, Reynolds families and others. Some of the early settlers mentioned are Patrick MCNULTY, a relative of Catherine MCNULTY KEARNS; Thomas MCANDREWS, probable father of Mary who married Michael Tearence KEARNS, and Peter REYNOLDS, who married Eliza KEARNS.
It also gives, rather than John Kearns, a P. KEARNS as an early settler.

A Patrick KERNS is found in the 1840 Mobile census who lives near a TERRENCE. This may be of relevance. It may be that John KEARNS, though immigrating in 1850, may have had KEARNS relatives already in Mobile. I especially wonder if there is a connection because of George TERRENCE appearing in this same census and John and Catherine naming a child Michael Tearence.

Return of Death for Catherine MCNULTY

kearns_catherine_returnofdeath

Last of a Coterie of Pioneer Settlers

Patrick McNulty (also given as born 1825, died 1911 at the age of 86) may have been a cousin of Catherine. A newspaper article, titled “Last of a Coterie of Pioneer Settlers”, read:

With the burial of Mr. P. McNulty passed away the last one of a class of hardy Irishmen that settled beyond the Three Mile creek many years previous to the Civil War. All north of Owen’s Lane to LaFargue’s Bul Head and west from St. Stephen’s road to Burden’s creek was the territory settled. These hardy pioneers brought to the highest state of perfection the production of early vegetables and laid the foundation of knowledge that the present day truck farmer enjoys in that vicinity. Among the first settlers were the three brothers, Thomas, Patrick and Martin McAndrew; James Stewart, Michael McDonald, John Tuite, M. McGuire, M. McHale, Mr. Doody, M. Devine, Charles Rooney, Thomas Finch, P. Kearns and Mr. Green, father of county commissioner Green, and P. McNulty. Martin Costello, who laid the foundation of his fortune by truck farming; Peter Reynolds, John Clashy and the late P. Sweeny were truck growers for many years, but their advent was after the Civil war; so that with the death of Mr. McNulty all of the original settlers have passed to the great beyond. The descendants of this sturdy race are very numerous, and with few exceptions all of them made honorable and useful citizens. It will be a long time, if ever, that this part of the country will ever see their likes again.

Patrick McNulty died June 29, 1911 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama.

Peter Reynolds and Elizabeth “Eliza” Ann Kearns

Elizabeth (Eliza) Ann KEARNS, daughter of John KEARNS and Catherine MCNULTY , was born about 1852 according to the 1860 census. There are discrepancies as to these dates, just as her brother, Michael Tearance KEARNS, is given a number of different birth dates.

Elizabeth died at 11:40 P.M., September 15, 1932. Her death certificate states she was living at 750 S. Broad St. in Mobile, and had been there 19 years. The informant was a daughter, Mrs. F. POLLMAN, who also lived at 750 S. Broad St.

Elizabeth’s death certificate gives her birth date as October 12, 1861, which is a false date. The 1870 census gives it as October 12, 1854. (And yet the 1860 census records her as being 8 years of age.) Corinne and Brother Chas REYNOLDS are given as having taken out an insurance policy on Elizabeth, and they took a few years off her date of birth in order to qualify.

Elizabeth was buried at Catholic Cemetery.

Peter REYNOLDS, b. April 1849, was from Roscommon, Ireland. The 1870 census gives him as 21 and living at a boarding house in Dallas County. He was a carriage painter. Place of birth was given as Virginia. The 1900 census lists him as a gardener, residing at Davis Ave. He died 24 March 1913 at about 64 years of age.

Elizabeth and Peter had 6 children:

1) Mary Catherine REYNOLDS, b. Sept. 1879, died of tuberculosis 17 Sept. 1912 in Mobile, AL at about 33 years of age, married Ed RIDGLEY. Their son was John Edward RIDGLEY.

2) John Terrance REYNOLDS, b. 21 Jan 1883, died 12 Dec. 1951 at about 68 years of age, married, in Jackson, Tennessee, Mary Phobe CORNELL who was born 1886, and died December 9th, year unknown. Their son was John Terry REYNOLDS.

3) Corinne Ann REYNOLDS, b. 7 Jan 1884, died of a heart attack 19 April 1953 at about 69 years of age in Mobile, AL., married at St. Joseph Church, Mobile AL., 22 Oct. 1913, Frederick J. POLLMAN, b. 25 Jan. 1881, died 25 June 1958 at about 77. Their children were Fred POLLMAN, Mary POLLMAN and Chase Pollman.

4) Charles Peter REYNOLDS, born 13 June 1887, died 9 January 1960 at about 73., married in 1927 Marie FORD who died 18 Dec. 1940. They had no children.

5) William Anthony REYNOLDS was born 13 June 1890 and died 18 June 1891.

6) Edward Joseph REYNOLDS was born 22 Nov. 1893 and died of leukemia 28 Sept. 1903 at 10 years of age.

Timothy Kearns and Abbey Bernard

Timothy, son of John Kearns and Catherine McNulty, was given as 1 year of age in the 1860 census. Dying in Mobile on 1938 Feb 10, his death certificate gives his date of birth as March 01, 1878 and states he was 59 at the time of his death. This misinformation may have had to do with pension reasons or life insurance. He was a retired engineer living at Hannon Home and was still married though the census shows he had been separated from his wife for decades. The informant was Mrs. Fred Pollman, a niece, who resided at 750 S. Broad St. He was buried at the Catholic Cemetery in the Kearns plot, next to his parents.

Hannon Home was run by The Little Sisters of the Poor. Timothy died while his niece, Corrine R. Pollman, and her son, Fred, were visiting him. His last request before he died was to have a drink (liquor) which Fred went after. Upon his return, Tim was dead. A description of him is: “He was a drunk. Big drinker. Buried by Little Sisters of the Poor.”

Man, if you’ve lived to nearly 79 years of age and you’re an alcoholic and your last request is a drink, who’s to blame you. Death bed DT’s seem kind of useless.

Timothy married Abbey L. Bernard who was born 1871 in South Carolina.

Census information seems to show them having had about 4 children, only one of whom it seems survived infancy, Oliver Bernard Kearns. Born April of 1887, he died in Mobile on Oct 16 1918 at the age of 31.

Oliver, from his WWI registration card, appears to have never married. He was given as living at 10 N. Hamilton St. in Mobile. He was born April 11 1887. He was a salesman at Mobile Auto Co. He was single and his mother was dependent. He was short, slender, his hair was brown and his eyes dark blue.

I find Timothy documented before 1900.

The above mentioned Corrine was the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Kearns Reynolds, wife of Peter, who was born 1854 Oct 12 and died 1932 Sept 15. Timothy’s other sibling, Michael Buddy Tearence Kearns, had died in 1932 Oct 21 only a brief time after Elizabeth.

Michael Tearance Kearns and Mary McAndrews

Michael “Buddy” Tearance KEARNS was born 19 Jan 1865 or 1856 or 1860, even as early as 1853 according to the 1900 census, though the 1870 census gives him as born 1855 and the 1860 census gives him as born about 1856. He was born at Toulminville, Mobile Co. AL to John KEARNS and Catherine McNULTY, both from Ireland. He was the second son of 4 known children.

Michael married Mary MCANDREWS b. Jan. 1862, possible daughter of Thomas MCANDREWS. According to the 1900 census they had been married 13 years so were married about 1887 when Mary was about 25 and Michael was probably about 32.

Michael and Mary had 2 children who lived to adulthood:

  • Rhett Goode KEARNS b. 16 June 1888, married Susan Elizabeth CRABTREE. He married second Carmie Cordila GILMORE.
  • Claude Martin KEARNS b. 24 Sep 1894, died June 7 1978 at about 84 years of age. He married Inez M. born 25 May 1899 and died Feb. 1983 at about 84 in Alabama. They had no children. (Source: SSDI gives the above birthdate for Claude, and death as June 1978, his SS# issued in Alabama. C. Pollman gives Claude as having been born 1895 and also provides the death date. SSDI gives the above dates for Inez; C. Pollman provided she was born 1899 and died 1983.)

The family is found in the 1900 Alabama Mobile census nestled amongst several other Irish families. Catherine KEARNS, Michael’s mother, is seen living with the REYNOLDS, her daughter’s family. Thomas McANDREWS, probable father of Michael’s wife, is also seen on the census. I only give here pertinent individuals with some of the surrounding families:

C. Pollman has located Michael on the 1910 census, which gives him as 50 and married 33 years. He was a foreman; a chemical worker. Mary was 44. Her parents are given as born in Ireland. Rhett Goode was 21 and Claude Martin was 15. They were both living at home. Rhett was an electrical worker.

Michael’s death certificate gives his date of birth as January 19, 1865. It states that he was living at 105. N. Franklin St. in Mobile at the time of his death, 21 Oct. 1932, at the age of 67, and had been living there 23 years. He died a month after his sister Eliza. He was working as a Night Superintendent at the Municipal Docks, and had been at this occupation 5 years. The informant was Mrs. M. F. Kearns, who C. Pollman gives as probably being his wife with a wrong middle initial.

Michael is given as having lost his arm in an accident.

It is likely that Michael was born about 1855, in accordance with the earliest census data, and so was 72 at the time of his death.

Michael was buried at Catholic Cemetery in Mobile. Sec. D, Lot 29.

Michael’s death certificate.

Thomas McAndrews (McAndrew) and Catherine

It is probable that Mary MCANDREWS, who married Michael Tearance KEARNS, was a daughter of Thomas MCANDREWS and Catherine.

Thomas MCANDREWS appears in the 1870 Alabama Mobile census, given there as 46, born about 1824 in Ireland, and is married to a Catherine, born abt. 1840 in Ireland. Among their children is a Mary, who is of age to be Mary MCANDREWS KEARNS.

Thomas had two brothers who settled “8 Mile” AL–Patrick and Martin–according to an article on “8 Mile”. Individuals who are likely these siblings generally appear nearby in the censuses.

Martin MCANDREWS, a brother to Thomas, in the 1900 census gives himself as immigrating in 1852. This would have been at the tail end of the Great Irish Famine which lasted from 1845-1850 or 1852, depending on who relates the history.

Thomas and Catherine appear to have had 8 children:

  • James b. abt. 1859 in AL. According to the 1900 census he married a Katie, b. 1861 in AL. Children in that census are: Leo b. March 1884; May b. August 1886, and Allen b. March 1891.
  • Mary b. 1862 in AL. Married Michael KEARNS.
  • Thomas b. abt. 1864 is seen in the 1870 census. This is possibly Charles who appears in the 1880 census as 17 years of age. He married Mary b. 1867 according to the 1900 census. Children listed in that census are: Ellen? b. Dec. 1888; Barbara b. July 1895.
  • Patrick b. abt. 1865, AL.
  • Catherine/Cochina (f) b. abt. 1867, AL.
  • Martin b. abt. 1870 AL.
  • Ann b. abt. 1872, AL.
  • Sarah b. abt. 1875, AL. married a James Francis (Frank) Tuite who was b. 1870 Junie in Mobile and died 1901 June 21. They had Alfonse (John?) and Catherine.

As one can see, there are a number of children who I don’t have any descendant history on. Perhaps a descendant or two will possibly one day visit this blog and have some information and stories to share.

The family has been located in the following censuses:

In the 1860 census Thomas, age 32, and Catherine, age 22; Martin age 24, and Patrick, age 27, and Hanora, age 22, are all living next door each other. A James MCANDREW, 65, is in the house of Thomas, who is of an age to be a father, but is instead given as a laborer. Also a Catherine, age 62, is living in the house of Martin, who I imagine is the mother of the three siblings.

In the 1870 census, Thomas has aged 14 years since the last census and is 46, and Catherine has aged 8 years since the last census and is 30. They appear now with 6 children. Children of Patrick, age 40 (he’s aged 13 years), and Hanora, age 30 (she’s aged 8 years), given in that census, are: John, Mary, Thomas and Maggie.

In the 1870 census there is also a Martin MCANDREWS who is given as 21, with a wife, Mary, 27, and who has James McANDREWS age 80 living with he and his wife. This is likely the same James who was in Thomas’ house in the 1860 census, given then as 65.

Catherine KEARNS also appears in the same census (as KURNS) who is mother of Michael who will marry Mary MCANDREWS.

The 1880 census now shows Catherine KEARNS and son Michael (future husband of Mary MCANDREWS) living a couple of pages over from Thomas MCANDREWS, 47, Cathern (sic) 45, and family.

A Martin MCANDREWS also appears, age 50, and his wife Mary, 40. In their household is a Katie BOWMAN who is given as a sister born in Ireland. This is likely the same Martin who was given as 24 in the 1860 census and 21 in the 1870 census.
