Edward Wilson Enlow and Elizabeth Wood

Edward Wilson Enlow was born 1800 May 11 in Carlyle, Nicholas, Kentucky and died 1872 Aug 21 in Van Buren County, Iowa. He married abt 1819 to Elizabeth Wood who was born 1803 Feb in Massachusetts and died 1877 June 28 in Winchester, Van Buren, Iowa. Both are buried at the Winchester Cemetery in Winchester.

Edward was a son of Jesse Enlow (1768-1845) and Eleanor Wilson (1774-1849). He was named for his mother’s father, Edward Wilson.

Edward and Elizabeth had 11 children:

  1. Amos Wood b. 1820 Jan 1, died 1862 May 10
  2. Hannah Bunty b. 1822 Feb 22, died 1822 Feb 26
  3. William Henry b. 1823 Aug 28 in Adams Co., Ohio, died April of 1904, married 1856 June 5 in Birmingham, Van Buren, Iowa to Laura J. Stonebraker b. 1836 March 16 in , Washington Co., Maryland, died 1891 June 28 in Birmingham, Van Buren, Iowa.
  4. Mary Jane b. 1824 Nov 15 in Ohio, died 1895 Jan 2 in Chautauqua Co., Kansas, married William S. Hackney b. 1820 March 17 in Ohio and died 1891 June 2 in Chautauqua Co., Kansas. Direct line.
  5. Lucien (Lucian) Lafayette b. 1826 Aug 23, died 1832 June 15
  6. Eleanor (Elinor) Watson b. 1828 Aug 1, died 1828 Aug 30
  7. George Andrew b. 1829 July 10, died 1830 April 18
  8. Edward Albert b. 1832 Feb 11, died 1833 March 10
  9. Ann Elizabeth b. 1833 March 17 in Ohio, died 1883 Dec 12. I read that she married Hershey Blackstone, born 1834 in Ohio. Instead I find her in the census married to a W. E. Blackstone.
  10. Susannah Amanda b. 1836 Oct 7 in Iowa, died 1900 Jan 8 in Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa. 1866 Feb 13 she married Andrew Bradford b. 1840 Dec 15 in Patriot, Switzerland, Indiana, died 1899 Dec 4 in Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa.
  11. Carolina Matilda b. 1839 May 8, died 1839 Sept 18.

We find the family in the census in 1820 in Scott, Adams, Ohio.

A confusing entry. 1 male under 10 would be Amos Wood, and the 16 to 26 year old male would be Edward. No female is given. The Susannah WOOD living two houses away could possibly be Elizabeth WOOD’s mother.

As far as I’m aware, the couple moved to Jacksonville, Ohio in 1820. I’ve been unable to locate the family in the 1830 census. They’ve been reported as moving in 1835 to Carthage, Illinois, and on to Lee Co., Iowa that same year. But the bio of son, William Henry Enlow gives them in Iowa by 1833 but daughter Ann is given as born 1833 in Ohio.

They appear in the 1838 census in Lee Co., Iowa.

They are in the 1840 census in Van Buren Co., Iowa.
